the audacity of asking such a question to zarkon … BAFFLING. time itself stops for the barest moment ( it is just as afraid of the terrible power of that day ) and zarkon’s returning gaze alone brings time back to its snail paced LIFE. what happened on that day is legend, rumor even, and many do not know of it. until n o w.

‘on that day… we were ATTACKED. the ones i knew as allies became our enemies. the alteans.’ he ground out the name as a curse, the tendons in his hands drawn tight as a bowstring on his throne. ‘if they were not attacking us, they ignored our w a i l s for aid. a payment…’ violet eyes fall closed as he feels his back draw into a shudder. ‘even if i had the black lion on my side, the others were able to take our home from us. their forces outnumbered us… and they kept the black lion from me so she could not help. it was all for what? to make an E X A M P L E of us? i was going to make us strong and the most powerful force in the universe! and king alfor decided to destroy us in order to try and STOP me from making us both strong.’ 

the shaking in zarkon’s breaths are hard and laborious. ‘king alfor did not agree with the gathering of quintessence. so he destroyed us… and so i returned what he sought.’ and now the story is known. however there are often two sides to a story … and only CONQUERERS tell tales that paint them in glory and pity.

there is a stirring within zarkon - nostalgia, agony, LOSS - and he grinds his jaw in order to have the pain jerk him back into the proper realm of existence. ‘NO. history has told you wrong… i was the one who was b e t r a y e d.’ his altean paladins, those who could not agree with his side because they were not galra, they did not have to mourn, they did not have watch his planet DIE. 

‘what was difficult was having those whom i trusted most decide that i was in the wrong. that i was the EVIL that had done it… and so in the end, i DID betray them in giving them exactly what they gave me. a broken home and no one to turn to.’

he hardly has enough time to even STUMBLE out of the way, feet tripping over themselves as he haphazardly tosses himself to the side. he feels the BREEZE when Zarkon passes him, reality burrowing deeper under his skin as his heart twists in on itself. Shiro hadn’t known what scared him the most — the fact that ZARKON WAS HERE or how unnaturally REAL it had felt.

the BELLOW sends cold prickles down his spine as he quickly makes an attempt to pick himself back up onto his own feet. he struggles to speak, finding himself sputtering and struggling for a proper breath of air - was it air? Another ILLUSION? It certainly felt icy cold, permeated with pure fear that nipped at his lungs and closed his throat. “H-how — how are you doing- DOING THIS?! ”

his gauntlets groan as he tightens his fingers into a FIST, ready to pull back for another strike. teeth are shown in a feral dominance, the large alien king twisting to face the human down. the dirt ( or sand, or rock, or ice; it made no DIFFERENCE in the realm of dreams ) below them shivered as zarkon stepped forth once more. 

‘what does it matter HOW, shiro? it only matters that i will DEFEAT you.’ the growl is low in his chest, echoing deep into the realm. how could an illusion possibly breath like HOT EMBER down the back of the paladin’s neck? yet in reality, would zarkon be able to appear so q u i c k behind shiro without so much as a blink? perhaps not.
