No one tells you the sadness you will feel once you learn to begin forgiving a parent who caused so much turmoil in your life. Finally understand who they are and why they are the way they are. It helps to see them as human. However, there is some guilt for thinking angrily towards them instead of taking the time to understand. I couldn't do that until I took the time to understand myself. Look deep inside and see that I am imperfect and I have a lot of experiences that made me who I am today. This parent had a lot of experiences growing up. Doesn't mean I forgot, just that I can forgive. For my own well being and mental health, but also because God commands me to forgive them and love them. This is not supposed to be a general post for every situation with a parent. Some parents have done some disgusting, violent, and harmful things towards their children that would justify cutting contact and having nothing to do with them. This is my own personal journey. Just thankful for God giving me the ability to see them and forgive them. It's been years in the making.
