i actually think a lot of the response to this album stems from the increasing attitude that art has to be morally pure to be good

And another thing. Regardless of the (massive) degree to which she bounced back from it, people doubting the impact of the Kim/Kanye frame job on Taylor’s life, career, and mental health either were not sufficiently online in July-November 2016 or have faulty memories. She legit couldn’t say a word without people begging her to disappear off the face of the earth. That’s not an experience that you can just shrug off, no matter how successful your next album is…

And not just 2016. For a year before that, she couldn’t do ANYTHING without people criticising and attacking her for it. I remember somewhere she said she stopped posting happy birthday messages to her friends on social media because if she didn’t do it for a person it would be turned into a whole feud and story. She couldn’t donate to anything without being called an attention seeker. She couldn’t breathe without someone using her as the pinnacle of everything they hate about women basically.
