Our eighth Tumblr Day auction is going strong right now! February 14th is Book Giving Day! =D

With that in mind we tasked people with making items and finding supplies that fit within the theme of Book Giving Day, and yesterday they were finally allowed to post their glorious items for the world to see! We always ask our sellers to think outside of the box and so some of the things they came up with are super fun! ;)

As a special allowance in honour of it being Book Giving Day and because of the mutual understanding and camaraderie that books foster, we also allowed our sellers to post in this auction new/like new/gently used condition books!

1. To start things off for Book Giving Day we have this beautiful feather bookmark featuring both leaf and “lolita” style cameo charms! Handmade by Leslie DeFrancisco! =)

- Residents of India are the world's biggest readers, spending an average 10.7 hours a week. -

2. Next up we have this stunning papercut based on the classic fairytale Beauty and the Beast! Handmade by Bruno Cunha! =)

- Beauty and the Beast was written by French novelist Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve and published in 1740 in La Jeune Américaine et les contes marins. -

3. A super fun throw pillow featuring a handpainted motif of the Crisis Moon compact from Sailor Moon! Handmade by Nikki Simon! =)

- All of villains throughout Takeuchi's manga, and the corresponding anime adaptations, have a particular theme. Rocks and minerals are present through all five story arcs, while later seasons have secondary themes like from the Greek mythos. Takeuchi also slips in what might seem like advanced chemistry terms in the names, like the droids Chiral and Achiral. This makes sense though, as Takeuchi was a licensed pharmacist with a degree in Chemistry. -

4. A fantastic hardcover instructional book about beading! Supplied by Wendy Meek Whorton =)

- The first printed books didn’t have the name of the author or even the title printed on the covers. The covers were artworks itself, covered in drawings, leather or even gold.-

5. Here we have a super badass art piece featuring the logos of all our favourite superheros! Handmade by Maacha Lewis =)

- When Joe DiMaggio was playing with the New York Yankees, he loved reading Superman comic books, but he was too embarrassed to buy them himself; he thought it tarnished his image. So he would send other Yankee players to go to the local newsstand and buy the latest issues for him. -

6. Next is a super cute felt cupcake page marker! Handmade by Alissa Allieva =)

- The oldest Cookbook in the world, clay Babylonian tablet, is inscribed in Akkadian. It dates back to 1750 BC (the time of Hammurabi) and contains the oldest known cooking recipes. .-

7. Super fun water drop catnip toys based on the Nursery Rhyme “It’s Raining, It’s Pouring”. 100% of proceeds going to Flint, Michigan to assist with relief efforts! Handmade by Nicole Drouillard! =)

- It has been suggested that the verse is a "classic description" of a head injury ("bumped his head"), followed by a lucid interval and an inability to resume normal activity ("couldn't get up in the morning"). -

8. Sneaking into number 8 we have these lovely earrings based on The Picture of Dorian Gray! Handmade by Joelle Dobkin Doherty! =)

- The Picture of Dorian Gray is a philosophical novel by the writer Oscar Wilde, first published complete in the July 1890 issue of Lippincott's Monthly Magazine. The magazine's editor feared the story was indecent, and without Wilde's knowledge, deleted roughly five hundred words before publication. -

9. Next up we have a pair of wonderful children’s colouring books! Supplied by Lana Aabol =)

- One of the first psychologists to apply coloring as a relaxation technique was Carl G. Jüng in the early 20th century. He did this through mandalas: circular designs with concentric shapes similar to the Gothic churches’ rose windows. -

10. Last but certainly not least we have a ridiculously adorable crochet turtle based on the Tortoise and the Hare! Handmade by Jennifer Galay! =)

- As in several other fables by Aesop, there is a moral ambiguity about the lesson that is being taught in the Tortoise and the Hare. In Classical times it was not the Tortoise’s plucky conduct in taking on a bully that was emphasized but the Hare’s foolish over-confidence. An old Greek source comments that 'many people have good natural abilities which are ruined by idleness; on the other hand, sobriety, zeal and perseverance can prevail over indolence. -

1. To start things off for Dragon Appreciation Day we have this stunning Dragon Vein Agate necklace! Handmade by Abbey Dalton! =)

- Dragons are among the most popular and enduring of the world's mythological creatures. Dragon tales are known in many cultures, from the Americas to Europe to India to China. Though they populate our books, films, and television shows, they have a long and rich history in many forms. -

2. Next up we have this EPIC Make Every Day Magical papercut! Handmade by Bruno Cunha! =)

- When Christianity spread across the world; dragons took on a decidedly sinister interpretation and came to represent Satan. In medieval times, most people who heard anything about dragons knew them from the Bible, and it's likely that most Christians at the time believed in the literal existence of dragons. -

3. A gorgeous necklace made from re-heated quartz, very reminiscent of dragon claws ;) Handmade by Terr AZ =)

- The belief in dragons was based not just in legend but also in hard evidence or so it seemed. For millennia no one knew what to make of the giant bones that were occasionally unearthed around the globe, and dragons seemed a logical choice for people who had no knowledge of dinosaurs. -

4. Build your very own castle with these amazing lego block soaps to protect you from all those dragons! Handmade by Helene Tapp =)

- The word "dragon" comes from the ancient Greek word "draconta," meaning "to watch," -

5. Here we have lovely silver tonedragon charm earrings! Handmade by Joelle Dobkin Doherty =)

- Dragons typically guard treasure such as mountains of gold coins or gems, though this makes little logical sense: a creature as powerful as a dragon surely doesn't need to pay for anything. It is instead a symbolic treasure, not for the hoarding dragon but instead booty for the brave knights who would vanquish it. -

6. Next is a fantastic reversible cotton apron, knights and dragns on one side and arrows on the other! Handmade by Tiffany Acuff =)

- One of the most famous medieval British legends revolves around a knight named St. George. He is celebrated for slaying a dragon that kidnapped a king’s daughter as part of a mission to kill all the beautiful women in the land. With the help of an enchanted orange tree, St. George was able to slay the dragon and rescue the fair maiden.-

7. A beautiful necklace featuring Sea Sediment Jasper and a wonderful dragon head charm! Handmade by Leslie DeFrancisco =)

- In ancient Chinese mythology, the people believed that there were three species of dragons; these were known as “lung” (sky), “li” (sea) and “kiau” (marsh) dragons.Instead of being feared, these magnificent mythological creatures were admired so much that the dragon was often a symbol for imperial authority. -

8. Sneaking into number 8 we have this super adorable dragon sculpture, fantastic colours! Handmade by Nicky Lada =)

- The design for Saphira the dragon in the Eragon movie was based on several different animals, including eagles, puppies and wildebeests-

9. Next up we have some wonderful earrings, the milky fired agate is definitely reminiscent of some crackly dragons eggs! Handmade by Debbie Seibert =)

- The King of Denmark sent the spirit of a wizard to scout for a way to invade the country. A dragon, backed up by an army of snakes and insects scared the wizard away from one region of the country. A gigantic bull, a huge bird and a mountain giant also frightened away the wizard and convinced him that the country could not be invaded.These are known as the four landvættir, and any Viking ships featuring any of these grimacing weren’t allowed near shore, because they didn’t want to provoke them.-

- Western scientists didn't find out about the giant reptiles that are the Komodo Dragon until 1912, but long before they finally showed up on academia’s radar, Komodo Island natives had given them the name “ora," which means “land crocodile.” -

- The ancient Greeks had their own dragons. They believed that there were four different species of dragons, which included the fire-breathing Chimera, a serpent called Dracones, a marine being named Cetea and a fearsome female monster named Dracaenae. -

- In antiquity, dragons were mostly envisaged as serpents, but since the Middle Ages, it has become common to depict them with legs, resembling a lizard.-

- The ancient Celts, also revered dragons as wise and powerful animals who often had the gift of prophecy. They worshipped dragons and thought them akin to gods, as they felt they symbolized the joining between this world and the next. They also thought that dragons guarded the gates of the Underworld -

15. Next is a wonderful tote embroidered with a vibrantly coloured eastern style dragon! Handmade by Leigh Woods =)

- The blood of a slain dragon is depicted as either beneficent or as poisonous in medieval legend and literary fiction. In German legend, dragon blood has the power to render invincible skin or armor bathed in it, as is the case with Siegfried's skin or Ortnit's armor. In the Slavic myth, the Earth refuses it as it is so vile that Mother Earth wishes not to have it within her womb, and it remains above ground for all eternity. The blood of the dragon in Beowulf has acidic qualities, allowing it to seep through iron. -

- Dragons and dragon motifs are featured in many works of modern literature, particularly within the fantasy genre. Prominent works depicting dragons include J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter novels, and Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern. -

- The popular role playing game system Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) makes heavy use of dragons, and has served as inspiration for many other games' dragons. Though dragons usually serve as adversaries, they can be either good or evil, with their alignment being determined by their species -

18. Here we have a fantasticly unique, Pink Dragonfly in Flowers headband! Handmade my Muthmainna Ina =)

- It’s believed a dragons tooth used to bring good luck and some people even said that if Dragons teeth were sown in the ground they would grow into fighting soldiers. -

19. Another super cute dragon sculpture, made with polymer clay and perfect for Valentine! Handmade by Paula Rodrigues =)

-In many cultural stories, dragons exhibit features of other animals, like the head of elephants, claws of lions and beaks of predatory birds. Their body colors are widely different – red, blue, green, red, gold, but usually earth tones. In some cultures, the colors have specific meanings. -

-“Dragon” is actually a family term that includes other mythological creatures, such as cockatrices, gargoyles, wyverns, phoenix, basilisks, hydras, and even some hybrid man-dragon creatures. You’ve probably seen some of these in movies or books.-

21. Next is a lovely heart shaped, purple and black dragons vein agate! Supplied by Trish Peterson =)

-Another interpretation of the history of the term Dragon is that entered the English language in the early 13th century from Old French dragon, which in turn comes from Latin draconem (nominative draco) meaning "huge serpent, dragon", from the Greek word δράκων, drakon (genitive drakontos, δράκοντος) "serpent, giant seafish". -

22. And last but certainly not least we have the dragons midday snack, an adorable plush knit hedgehog! Handmade by Nicole Drouillard =)

- There is a widespread belief that earlier cartographers used the Latin phrase hic sunt dracones, i.e., "the dragons are here", or "here be dragons", to denote dangerous or unexplored territories, in imitation of the infrequent medieval practice of putting sea serpents and other mythological creatures in the blank areas of maps. -

1. To start things off for Games Day we have these stunning arrow shaped, enameled cuff bracelets! Handmade by Heather Carlton =)

- Splitting an arrow down the middle by shooting another one in the middle of it is called a "Robin Hood." -

2. Next up we have a pair of fantastic sugar skull masks made with glitter, paper, Swarovski crystals and faux flowers! Handmade by Maacha Lewis =)

- The original title for the game Grim Fandango was Deeds of the Dead. The name was changed to reference a poem recited in the game when the marketing department didn't want to publish a game with the word "dead" in its title. -

3. A fantastic keychain fashioned to represent the retro videogame Asteroids complete with a cabochon space pendant and tiny rocket ship! Handmade by Mischa Peters =)

- Asteroids was one of the most popular and influential games of the golden age of arcade games, selling 70,000 arcade cabinets and being widely imitated. It has since been ported to multiple platforms. -

4. A super cute pair of (not so angry) bird charm earrings! Handmade by Randi RaeAnn Wiley =)

- If you are ever in Tampere in Finland you might want to stop in at Angry Birds Land. This isn’t the only park on the planet to celebrate the game. There is also an attraction in the Window of the World Park in China where you can fire giant stuffed birds at green balloons.-

5. Here we have a wonderful scale dice bag for all you tabletop gamers out there! Handmade by Crystal- Ann Simpson‎ =)

- Dungeons & Dragons, developed in 1974 by Dave Arneson and E. Gary Gygax and published by Gygax's company, TSR, was the first commercially available role-playing game. -

6. Next is a stunning bracelet made of rutilated quartz and featuring a hamsa hand! Handmade by Arlene Marie =)

- Pattycake is one of the oldest and most widely known surviving English nursery rhymes and is often accompanied by hand-clapping between two people, -

7. A super adorable bib featuring some of our favourite Nintendo Characters! Handmade by Cynthia Betancourt de Alvarado =)

- Nintendo lucked out in hiring Shigeru Miyamoto, a 24 year old as their first staff artist in 1977. He would eventually become a creator of Donkey Kong, Mario, Zelda and the Wii -

- The previous LittleBigPlanet games had only 3 layers of depth, but LBP 3 has 16 layers -

- According to the Sonic Comic series, Sonic had a weird lab accident involving a hamster wheel and some sneakers and this managed to give him blue fur and super speed. No, really! Sonic was supposedly a normal brown hedgehog until this accident took place. -

10. A super cool companion cube pillow! Handmade by Nikki Simon =)

- In Portal 2 when you wake up for the very first time in the tutorial area the game asks you to do a couple of things. One of them is jump, one of them is move around, and one of them is to stare at a painting. After completing the tutorial you are going back to bed, but when you wake up everything looks darker…electricity is out. But if you take a good look at the painting you can see that the painting itself has changed as well. It is suddenly night. Creepy stuff. -

11. Next we have an awesome pair of football earrings, customizable in your team colours! Handmade by Denise Ciccone=)

- It takes about 600 cows to make one full season’s worth of NFL footballs. -

12. A fantastically fun Super Mario Bros. bag, includes a zippered front and back pouch! Handmade by Leigh Woods =)

-  Mario has moonlighted on non-Nintendo systems a couple times in obscure educational games, but there’s no way a Mario platformer ever appeared on a non-Nintendo system, right? Well, actually, there was a rather strange semi-sequel to SMB released for NEC and Sharp computers in Japan.-

13. Last but certainly not least we have this super sweet dice and chain dangle earrings! Handmade by Lana Aabol

-  Dice have been used for gaming and divination purposes for thousands of years. Evidence found in Egyptian tombs has suggested that this civilization used them as early as 2000 b.c. Other data shows that primitive civilizations throughout the Americas also used dice. These dice were composed of ankle bones from various animals.-

- The raven has a reputation for having magical abilities and conspiring with the universe and all of the the magic it holds. -

2. Next we have a gorgeous hand wood burned divination pendulum board featuring a large triquetra in the center! Handmade by Melody Millward =)

- The term Occult is derived from Latin occultus, occulere which means to hide or the unseen, the opposite of apocalypse which is “that which is revealed.” -

3. Super lovely and ornate cross earrings accented with black beads! Handmade by Elizabeth Jones =)

- The word has come to denote that which is hidden from the uninitiated, which is imperceptible by normal senses, and thus refers to various magical and divinatory beliefs and practices such as astrology, tarot, palmistry, numerology etc. -

- The Eye of Horus is an ancient Egyptian symbol of protection, royal power and good health. The eye is personified in the goddess Wadjet. It is also known as ''The Eye of Ra''. -

- In ancient times, it was believed that apparent deviations from natural law involved mysterious and miraculous "super-natural" or occult laws, deriving from gods, invisible entities, or the souls of the dead. - Dia de los Muertos is a Mexican celebration and a day to celebrate, remember and prepare special foods in honor of those who have departed. On this day in Mexico, the streets near the cemeteries are filled with decorations of papel picado , flowers, candy calaveras (skeletons and skulls), and parades.  -

- The word Occult also applies to specific practices such as the prediction of the future, exploring past lives (reincarnation ), casting spells, and psychokinesis (mind over matter). -

- The Butterfly is a symbol of spiritual growth and transcendence as well as the divine feminism  -

- The Hamsa is a palm-shaped amulet popular throughout the Middle East and North Africa, depicting the open right hand, an image recognized and used as a sign of protection in many societies throughout history, the hamsa is believed to provide defense against the evil eye. -

- Occult qualities are properties that have no known rational explanation; in the Middle Ages, for example, magnetism was considered an occult quality. Newton's contemporaries severely criticized his theory that gravity was effected through "action at a distance", as occult. -

With that in mind we tasked people with making items and finding supplies that fit within the theme of those days, and yesterday they were finally allowed to post their glorious items for the world to see! 1. To start things off for Navy Day we have this gorgeous necklace featuring a wonderful turtle pendant! Handmade by Valerie Letterman =)

- Today this word posh means superior or fashionable and expensive. The word originated in colonial Boston where the trunks of wealthy passengers would carry the label “POSH,” which stood for “Portside Out Starboard Home.” This instructed the luggage handlers where to place the luggage to avoid intense sun exposure.-

2. Next we have these super adorable custom sailor themed birthday invitations for Navy Day! Handmade by Alissa Alleva =)

- The rise of Mediterranean navies was closely connected with the power struggles for control of the Greek archipelago and Italy and trade in the Mediterranean Sea.-

3. Super cute witchy earrings with vibrant orange beads for Black Cat Day! Handmade by Katherine Alexander Loizos =)

- Some cultures view black cats as good luck, including the U.K. Unfortunately, many in the U.S. consider them the opposite, sadly, this unfounded fear means black cats relinquished to animal shelters have a much harder time finding forever homes .-

4. A super fun and simple anchor necklace with lovely pearl accents for Navy Day! Handmade by  Randi RaeAnn Wiley‎ =)

- Sailing warships with guns began to be built by several states in the decades around 1500. They were few in number and major fleets were still formed by requisitioned or hired merchantmen.-

5. Here we have a stunning bronze tone seahorse key pendant for Navy Day! Supplied by Joelle Dobkin Doherty‎ =)

- Limey was formerly a term that refers to a British sailor, now this is also used generally to indicate a British person. The term came from the seventeenth and eighteenth century practice of issuing limes to British sailors to combat scurvy.-

6. Next is a pair of sweet earring featured rough black cat beads for Black Cat Day! Handmade by Debbie Seibert =)

-Black cats are melanistic. Melanism, which is black or nearly black pigmentation (and is the opposite of albinism), is seen not only in domestic kitties, but also in 11 of 36 wild species of cats. The trait is most prevalent in males. Melanism produces yellow irises due to the high levels of melanin in the pigment of black cats.-

7. A lovely memory wire bracelet featuring glass beads in all the shades of the ocean for Navy Day! Handmade by Lana Aabol =)

- Armada is the Spanish word for a fleet. In 1588, 'la felicissima armada', or 'the most fortunate fleet' was made up of 150 ships, mainly Spanish, but with some from Portugal and Naples. At the time, it was the largest fleet ever seen in Europe and Philip II of Spain considered it invincible. -

- The Indian Navy is the fifth largest Navy in the world and The Ezhimala Naval Academy in Kerala is the largest of its kind in Asia.-

9. Here we have a super awesome and adorable black cat magnet for Black Cat Day! Handmade by Nicky Lada =)

-The term "black panther" is used to describe any black jaguar, leopard or jaguarundi and said black panthers often still have visible spot patterns in their fur-

10. A fantastic and adorable sailor girl pinwheel bow for Navy Day! Handmade by Jaime Saunders Archer =)

- As the crow flies refers to the most direct route from one place to another without detours. Before modern navigational systems existed, British vessels customarily carried a cage of crows. 1. We start off with these wonderful over sized scrabble tiles, you can choose any combination of letters that you would like and you have the option for them to have the hanging hardware or not! Available [here] from Corner Chaos.

- In 1933, Alfred Mosher Butts created an early version of the game we know as Scrabble. To determine how many tiles there should be and how many points each letter should be worth, he calculated letter frequency on the front page of the New York Times.-

2. Here we have a handsome handmade scrabble board, there are many custom variations to be had, and it doesn't show in this picture but the tile holders also feature handy point counters! Available [here] from Vancouver Wood Smith.

- Butts named his game Lexico, then changed the name to Criss-Cross Words. His friend and eventual business partner James Brunot came up with the name SCRABBLE in the late 1930′s.-

3. Next we have this wonderful hand stamped stainless steel faux scrabble tile bracelet, so nerdy! Available [here] from Peyton’s Trinkets.

-Initially no game manufacturers would buy scrabble, so Butts made the games himself in his garage with Brunot's help. Around 1957, the president of Macy’s saw the game and placed a huge order that Brunot and Butts couldn't really fill, so then came a series of sales of the rights to the game until it eventually came to be owned by Hasbro.-

4. An item I feel everyone needs in their home, The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary- Collectors Edition! Available [here] from Minnie’s Stitches.

-Modern Scrabble is still the exact same as the original.-

5. One of the coolest items I've seen in awhile, a handmade scrabble board tote purse! Available [here] from Vintage Vinyl Redo.

-It’s possible to score 1782 points on a single word, that word is Oxyphenbutazone, and to get the points, player Benjamin Woo played it across the top of the board, hitting three Triple Word Score squares while making seven crosswords downward.-

- There are different word lists for different levels of competition- if you’re playing at a school level, you’re not allowed to play words that could possibly cause offense. If you’re playing at an adult-level, you’re supposed to be able to play any word a well-read educated person should have seen in some way. If you want to compete at an international level, you have to memorize things like misprints in Shakespearian manuscripts and Syrian texts, names of various obscure animals and plants from around the world and words in Indian etc.-

- For a number of reasons it can be argues that the game is best played in English-for instance, in French, it’s a little bit too easy to make words because most French words they can stick an E or an S at the end of so, every time you make a word, your opponent just sticks more letters and gets more points. German Scrabble players have the opposite problem, it’s hard to turn an existing German word into a longer German word, which creates a looser word grid.-
