very telling that even if you’re not allowed to view content related to self harm/suicide/eating disorders due to not giving up your ID on the uk internet you will still be shown relentless ads for weight loss drugs and fad diets showing unrealistic/AI generated bodies and unhealthy methods and time frames for weight loss that can only be achieved by starvation. oh and also so so many gambling ads. relentless ads for gacha and gambling services. almost like it’s not actually about protecting kids at all or something
Artists such as Elizabeth Colomba , Harmonia Rosales, and Titus Kaphar have painted black people into history in ways that have varying degrees of subtlety that awe and move the audience while reminding that this has not been the status quo. They point out a hole in history, which we know was deliberately created by means of colonization and slavery and by and for white supremacy.
Artist Ken Gonzales-Day found real photos of lynchings and removed the victims and ropes (using digital techniques) to force the audience to look not at the victim’s brutal death but rather at the horror of those who gathered for the spectacle. *
These things are art.
This AI “photo” reads as historical, not a corrective action: it allows the viewer to think “oh, I didn’t know about that,” without understanding that, per the artist’s own words, photos like this would have been impossible. I leaves a false impression. And I find that hateful.
That is not to say that black people could not or in fact have not been defying colonialism, slavery, and white supremacy for as long as these have existed, but the photo suggests a reprieve where there wasn’t one. It is a lie. A painting rather than AI photo could invite the audience to consider “what if,” and a photographer who wished to create such an image could have engaged with source texts (photos) of the time and engage other artists (textile designers) and spoken to historians, gathered subjects and created a queer wedding party to make real “what might have been” which would almost certainly have been a moving experience for all involved, and have made some measure of progress in addressing historical damages done.
There could also be real examples I know not of, of stories and photos such as this AI piece, which would be breath of fresh air. But the artist didn’t find such a thing, if there was even any effort made to find it.
Instead the artist used AI, which we know is developed by theft of others’ work, and created a lie.
AI is a lie. AI art is a lie. AI art is not art.
* So you can see it is not the use of photographs or digital techniques that makes the art bad, or a lie.

so. i just learned that my entirely me-written resume flags as being AI-written by automated HR systems for a few writing quirks and the fact that i followed all the rules of good resume writing, which is apparently a telltale sign of AI use in this fucking hellworld. i've been desperately applying to jobs that i am massively overqualified for for months with no response, not even an interview, and now i find out that at least part of the reason is because some fucking moron decided that following the rules every career advisor has given me for a decade means i cheated and should be disqualified. the ai bubble cannot pop soon enough. what the actual fuck.
