The Big Web Yoga Weekend, 27-29 June 2014 in Peterborough.
Top yoga teacher (my teacher!) and author of ‘Fierce Medicine’, Ana Forrest is headlining. She’s joined by Senior Shaman, Esther Lim as well as a host of other talented teachers from across the UK. This conference is packed full of great asana workshops and tantalising seminars from experts in yoga, energy work, sustainability, shamanism, bodywork and more! There’s even a Fire Ceremony at ‘Moonhenge’ near Peterborough.

A Celebration of Transformation
Since Saturday's successful fundraiser (thanks guys!) I have had a lot of questions about how I started Yoga, why and if I took to it naturally. Most people assume that I have come to Yoga with a gymnastic background or some kind of movement based speciality.
This demo for me was a celebration of where I am now, in my mind and in my body. In a relatively short time I feel like a brand new person, exploring ever deeper and shifting constantly. When I first began Yoga, I was stuck. I had just finished two surgical procedures on my legs a couple of months apart. My rehab wasn't great. I didn't have exercises to do and my legs would buckle under me with no real warning. Add to this that I was your typical guy, tight as ever, resistant to stretching and very competitive (I still can't play Badminton...Sorry Scott!). My first class at St Andrews Sports Centre was painful. My leg issues had given my lower back problems and I was struggling with the tightest hamstrings. I could barely move. When it got to standing poses I would get really nervous. But, I still went to the front of the class. I asked for help from the teacher and would talk to her frequently for advice and support. I did not enjoy it when I first started, it was hard, I couldn't do 90% of the moves and my back would ache something fierce. It took about 2 years before I felt like I was attending classes at a vaguely normal level (whatever that is). It wasn't until I met Ana Forrest that I realised I was using my Yoga to numb myself out. That my extreme competitiveness was not endearing. That my fear of abandonment and further disabling of my legs (not something I enjoyed) were putrefying in me, holding back something far more sinister. Through her guidance I have come through the other end, able to look back at these parts of myself, these broken shards and other lives and weave them back together. In this demo there is no external sign of that struggling person. I hope reading this can give you some depth into why this demo isn't just showing off. I want to feed you and push you to get back on your mat EVEN when your legs are buckling and your back is aching.

This Saturday evening we are hosting an amazing collaborative event with many local artists, musicians and performers to help raise some funds for Erin.
Erin has been part of Heart Space since it opened its doors in 2012 as a volunteer and recently has been working as our full time Studio Assistant and Teacher on the Young Yogis Project. Erin successfully completed her training for teaching up to 11 year olds and is looking to develop her skills to help target more in need groups like teenagers and adults with concerns ranging from depression to long term chronic pain conditions.
Erin has been accepted on the Forrest Yoga Foundation Teacher Training, an exceptional training that focusses on deep emotional healing and making sure that teachers have the adaptagenic tools to work with a wide range of students and conditions from a sound theoretical basis. This training will enable Erin to join Heart Space in it's outreach work to Secondary Schools and Youth Groups throughout Dundee. We are asking for your support and help. So come along on Saturday from 7.30pm for live music, performances by local bands, dancers and a demo from Finlay. There will be a bake stall with goodies and a Silent Auction featuring generously donated items from local artists, silversmiths and professionals in Dundee and Tayside.
The evening will be BYOB, so come along and meet our lovely staff, teachers, talented folks and the community.
Young Yogis Project - Teen Yoga
We are delighted to announce that since our fundraiser last week we have a great start to fund the project. We have raised enough money for 25 weeks of FREE Yoga for Teenagers. This is the only service of its kind for teens in Scotland, so we are delighted to lead the way on this. This will be for ages 12 - 18.
We are looking to get a solid run after the Easter holidays, giving us a good block of classes. These will be on Thursdays at 4.15pm - 5.15pm, totally FREE! If you know people who could attend, please share this. Similarly, those who work with Youth groups or clubs, let them know about the programme.
We will keep running fundraising to keep the project going, any donations are always appreciated to extend the project.
Young Yogis Project Teen
We are delighted that next weekend (16th Feb) we are hosting the 108 Sun Salutation Fundraiser. We wanted to give you some figures. If 10 of you show up for the on the door £10 registration/donation then we can provide 5 WEEKS of FREE Yoga for Teenagers aged 11-18. If 10 people achieve the £50 sponsorship target then we can provide FREE classes for 6 months! That would be pretty incredible. Remember that if you achieve the £50 sponsorship that you get a Free Young Yogis T Shirt! :)
Dance in Beauty
In Forrest Yoga, part of connecting to spirit is taking steps along the Beauty Road. Seeing Beauty, feeling it and communicating it effectively are large parts of the walk. The workshop will involve intuitive movement and guided exercises to learn to communicate without words, exploring ever changing connections between partners. This workshop will connect you without your own internal wisdom, explore the constant shift of information and how it translates through the body and explore how to move your way.
During this time you will be attuned to the situations and observing the beauty moments that will happen between partners and individuals and be inspired by the flow. No dance experience is necessary, only a willingness to explore how it is to move through the space off the Yoga mat.
The day will finish with a sharing of what moved your heart, the feeling of connection and the simplicity of working in trust through talking circle.

A follow up from Heal Your Back
Pain is a red light from the body, an early warning signal to say "proceed with caution." A lot of us read this as, stop, numb out, rest and quit. Resting won't resolve the pain. We need to move to release the blockages and stuck muscles, create the support that the hardened muscles are trying to create (working in tandem with the body's wisdom). Once we get these parts moving and spacious we can move energy through these places and move out what is stagnant. Here are 6 steps to walking free of pain from Ana Forrest's Fierce Medicine:
-Identify the location of the pain,
-Breathe into that location deeply (Are you breathing now?),
-Create space in that place, decompress the area,
-Strengthen your core,
-Use your legs to support your back,
-Learn to live spaciously (even at work!).

Stay present during all of these poses and pay attention to your personal edge. Don't ignore your body kinking up because you are trying to match a perceived perfection or look.

Looking to take a little more time to get these? Try out our video for Beginner Classical Suns. This is a great version for those of you needing more time to get into the lunges and to take care of the lower back.
This usually appears in week 2 of our beginner yoga courses.
Castor Oil Packs
This is another great remedy when working with back pain or with scar tissue. I use this with a lot of my clients who come for work on scars and I use it myself when my muscles are aching or if I have an injury. It might seem like a lot of faff, but I really love it!
Take some organic castor oil (its going on your skin, you don't want chemicals going in there). Get some linen and put about 2 tbs (or more if you are working a larger area) to cover the linen. Place oil part down on the injured spot or scar.
If the oil is going everywhere then you can wrap it in cling-film to stop the pack moving or making a mess (to be honest, I have never had a problem with it making a mess, I have more trouble with cling-film!)
Put a heat pack on top. Hot water bottle, heat pack or wheat bag. I like using wheat bags for my lower back as it can move into the contours of the body and holds the heat very well.
Have it there for about 20 minutes and massage in.
Heal Your Back
This weekend at Heart Space Dundee we are running a workshop to help give you tools for back pain. I (Finlay) have had a long history of issues with my back following my surgery and repeated injuries on my back. Through talking with students I realised that I have a lot of things that I do, other than Yoga, that really help me shift out of a stuck place. Epsom salt baths are a weekly staple for me. When my muscles are sore or I am feeling locked up in my back I take a long bath with Epsom salts. I use about 2 cups of salts per bath, Now that is salty!
Relax in the bath for about 20 minutes. This is great to do after a Yoga class or when you back just feels solid. This is the best place to get the salts, get quite a bit and keep it in your cupboard. http://www.thehealthbay.com/westlab-epsom-bath-salts.html

Today is the launch of our FREE Yoga classes for Kids and Teenagers. On Tuesday at 4.15pm Heart Space is offering a free class for 5-10 year olds and on Thursday for 11-18 year olds! This is an amazing opportunity for the youth of Dundee to experience Yoga regardless of cost. Heart Space strives to increase physical activity levels in Dundee and share the joy of a Yoga practice with the communities of Dundee. Share this with EVERYBODY!
