It is so frustrating that it is made clear in the text that Rae Sloane’s only motivation for interacting with Hux at all is that she is creeped out by the Jakku kids, and sees that he has command of them. She makes it clear in the text she doesn’t give a shit about him outside of the role he can play in keeping her alive while they are stuck on a tiny ship together.
Yet because he is inexplicably a fan fav (I still do not understand this at all) all of her development across multiple books, and the work put into making her into one of (if not the) most complex and interesting Imperial characters in current canon has been subsumed by the fandom to cast her solely as Hux’s mentor/mother figure.
Like how fucked up is that?
Rae Sloane plays a key role in a significant number of new canon stories, is an intriguing and complex character, yet the only value she has to the fandom is in relation to Armitage Hux, a boy she really does not care about at all.
Like I love the art of her that suddenly exists but it is so distressing that this fascinating character gets turned into nothing in the eyes of the fandom but a nurturer for Armitage Hux.
Meanwhile we also have fans going on and on about how the current canon lacks any and all interesting Imperials, and I want to scream at all of them that characters like Rae Sloane and Ciena Ree exist and are truly worth reading about.
(Of course none of these people are ever going to give a fuck, because both Sloane and Ree are black women and we all know the vast majority of this fandom will never give a fuck about any character who isn’t white)

“Uh, hi,” the pilot mumbled. “I’m Poe.” She nodded slowly, searching his face and finding that she liked it. “I recognize the name. So you’re Poe. Poe Dameron, the X-wing pilot. I’m Rey.” “I know.” He smiled back, a little more at ease. “Nice to meet you.”

Since I've been reading, watching and breathing Star Wars a LOT, I promised myself I was going to read or watch something different every time I finished a Star Wars book, comic, video game or TV series. I've been reading Bloodline, and I was planing on reading Hannibal next... But I keep reading amazing and touching quotes from the Rogue One book... I can't do it. I can't. Star Wars is stronger than me.
With a hoarse and ragged cry, he swept the rifle away from the rocks and set it in the mud at his side.
