hi author! looooove your fic "aw he fuckin the weed man (for weed)" so much. It's been such a good time. this might be an out of pocket request, but would it be possible to drop the "the blond said" "the tan man said" narrative style? i'm neurodivergent and it's really hard to follow, esp when you have other blond characters in the scene (like when shane gets jealous of the blond girl on ilya's couch, i mistakenly read that she was outside with them the first few times). also as a poc, when you say "tan" i imagine ilya and not an actual asian person.

Hi Reader!! I do appreciate that you at least preface your request with the explanation of being neurodivergent. I will say that I have been led to believe that my writing and my excessive use of epithets (“the blond”, “the Russian”, “the slightly shorter man”, “the freckled man”) irks some people! I did see a tweet recently about this and I chose to defend my use of them because I personally don’t find it easy to follow positioning/situations with the excessive use of “he” or other pronouns too similar. And the easiest thing to do would seemingly be to interchange the pronouns with their names, but when I look at a paragraph that has each of their names used more than twice, I cringe and seek out to replace what I can.

In the above excerpt from an upcoming piece I’m writing, I would likely replace a few instances of using their names. This is a lot for me for one paragraph.

As for referring to Shane as tan more often (which I know isn’t the main focus of your ask) I do just wanna point out that they are both warm-toned in their skin. Lighting and direction changes this, sure, but their skin tones are pretty evenly matched for the most part. I think i refer to Shane as tanner more often 1. because he has darker hair and darker eyes, something something color theory makes him appear a little darker in comparison to Ilya (who has blond hair and blue-green eyes) ((show versions of them, not book.))

In these above photos, I’d say they look very matched in terms of skin tone. Except maybe the Met Gala pic, because Connor had gotten back from filming in Mexico and tanned.

In these above pics and gifs (I couldn’t find stills of the gifs) I would say that Hudson/Shane looks darker due to lighting/dressing/maybe he was just in the sun a little!

And this is definitely not what you intended on getting from me either, but I’ll use this post as an excuse to scream it from the rooftops: Ilya/Connor is blond!! I’m no blond supremacist, I don’t care if someone disagrees and thinks his hair is sandy brown, it’s hair!! Who cares!! But I describe him as such, because that’s how I view him/his hair. We had this same problem with Dean Winchester’s hair in the SPN fandom sigh.

I’m glad you enjoyed the fic and that you still intend to read despite my style having some elements that confuse you. Tbh, I’m surprised the switching between tenses isn’t more of a problem for some people haha. I will be more descriptive in the way I write where they are/who they’re with, but due to my apprehension to use pronouns/names too often, you’ll have to pry my epithets from my cold dead hands!!

taking this from my own experiences: shane sleep talks(mumbles, really) and ilya, on occasion, will lift his arm and make some movement of his wrist only to drop it again to the bed, dead asleep.

source: my mom!! one time, she was asleep on the couch and lifted her arm, wrote something in the air with her finger, then dropped it back down. she has also been known on occasion to mumble things in her sleep and become irate should you ask her what she’s trying to say. very shane coded if you ask me.

adding onto this: as someone who could be classified as a burnout gifted kid with a complex about being the best at everything i do and riding the wave of validation when i do very well for myself, ilya definitely is in the same boat.

he was on top of the world. first draft pick, fucking women left and right, clubbing and drinking and supplementing his body with substances as often as he pleased. the crash he must have received from switching to a worse off team, moving away from the friends he’d made in boston, and losing carnal pleasures like sleeping around or even just smoking cigarettes? insane fall off.

and yes, he loves shane. and yes, he loves the life he builds with shane. but falling from such a high pedestal he put himself on had to have wounded him.

tacking on my hc that he has bpd (which validates the above even more so if you look at it from that perspective) makes this even more true imo
