Nicola Bryant who played Peri had grown up in the US as a child. They kept having her say things an American wouldn't say, she would point that out, and they were like "Just say the line". So she was like, what can you do
Huh interesting... The plot thickens...
Wait does this mean my original theory it was more accurate at the time is back in the running, or did she lose her accent and was rebuilding it from scratch? There's one time she said "there" that sticks in my mind as totally the British pronunciation, not American at all... But possibly Southern accents are like that more??
This is for anyone who is curious and didn't know already;
Nicola Bryant is from Guildford in Surrey, so not American at at all. The story that she grew up in the US was made up. However she married an American singer called Scott Kennedy who she met at Webber Douglas drama school and played Nanette in the school's production of No No Nanette, using an American accent. That is about the only American connection she has. The agent (Terry Carney) who spotted her in the show thought she actually was American and put her forward for the audition for Peri after she graduated. She of course admitted she was English but was told by the agent to pretend anyway. Nicola assumed if she got the role that they would mention her real nationality, yet when she did, somehow that didn't happen. So the poor thing had to pretend for 3 years that she was American or at least a dual citizen. 😅 I'm glad she got to tell the truth eventually.

oh come one anon had false info??? so we're back to "yes it was a totally constructed accent if it sounded better at the time the difference was marginal and yet it fooled loads of people but also TV audiences just didn't care because they were all kids, sexist men, and too poor to see American movies (what someone else told me), but also all her professional entertainment industry colleagues were also fooled, so unless they were all lying maybe I just got a bad episode because it wasn't the vocabulary that made me go 'wait what accent is this even supposed to be? American?'"
As a Brit myself watching the episodes, I think it was painfully obvious that the accent was put on and all over the place imo. Plus the British vocab sounded odd and out of place. Very cringe.
Years later, Nicola's accent has improved when playing Peri in the Big Finish DW audios and the vocab is definitely more suitable for an American. There has been debate where Peri is from, but it has since been established in audio stories that she is from Baltimore and the extended Whoniverse has run with it.

How do you understand her seeming success at pretending to be American if her accent is obviously bad to you? I don't understand how the ruse could be successful for one day, let alone three years.
I think back then most people didn't care, but there were definitely others who loathed it. All I know is that she has gotten a lot better at it with age, and she's done some impressive voice work over the years with various accents.
