My fav bagpipe player was a dude who would go out to the middle of a soccer field near my college apartment on Sunday. No one was using the field and he’d just be out there playing his heart out and the sound were just spread out over the plains. I’d be working on art for class so I’d open the window and listen. I still have fond memories of the day a kid biked up to the edge of the field, ran over to the bagpiper and the music stopped for a moment and as they talked. I couldn’t hear it but I had assumed the worst, that someone had decided to tell him to stop playing. Instead after the pause the musician seemed to nod, readjusted his bagpipes and started belting out the Star Wars theme.

Antifa International is an international anti-fascist social media collective, with members in five different countries.  Our purpose is to promote and support the global fight against bigotry and fascism. This month (June 2019) is our fifth anniversary.  We started this project right here on tumblr.  Over the last five years, we’ve made over 7000 anti-fascist tumblr posts; raised tens of thousands of dollars for antifa causes worldwide; and gained more than 30,000 followers. All that effort was wiped out yesterday when Tumblr unilaterally decided to delete our blog.  The reason they gave us was that we “posted hate speech.”   This is an absurd claim.  We are blog/collective whose entire raison d'être is to oppose hate speech, not promote it.  It’s possible that tumblr found an example of us raising the alarm about hate speech or taking apart the befuddled “logic” of some hate speech and somehow concluded that, in doing so, we were promoting hate speech.  But we’ll never know, because tumblr has refused to explain their decision or even show us the offending post.   Of course, this minor setback is doing nothing to stop us.  Here we are, not even 24 hours later, and we’re back up & running.  We’re still available on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.  We archived our former tumblr blog and will be re-posting everything there over the coming weeks.   The lesson here?  When we all agree to communicate and connect with each other over a limited number of venues controlled entirely by clueless tech bros, we give those people an obscene and unwarranted amount of control and power over our communities & movements.  Let’s use this moment as the impetus to build a social media channel that is controlled & regulated by the people who use it instead of what we have to choose from now.   In the meantime, please help us get back up to the level we were at by letting your people know that we’re here now; by reblogging the posts we’ll be putting up in the coming days; and by letting tumblr know you how you feel about what they did to us this weekend.
