My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell
Narrated by Grace Gummer
★★★★★★
Hello, my name is Heidi Ramsay and this is my favourite book to ever exist. This is my fifth time reading it and every single time I go into it, I feel that same shock, admiration and emotional pull all over again. It is an extremely important and painfully real story. There is a line that always hits me the hardest: “Vanessa, you didn’t ask for that. You were just trying to go to school.”
The structure of the novel is one of the reasons it stands out so much. Moving between Vanessa’s mind at different stages of her life, including when the grooming is happening and later when she is older and looking back on everything, makes the entire story even more powerful and absorbing. It is uncomfortable, it is raw, and it is told in a way that never once shies away from the truth. When we hear from Vanessa at fifteen, I always picture myself at that age. That is how rawly the story is written and how deeply it sinks in.
Vanessa is probably my favourite book character of all time. She is strong, intelligent and so vividly drawn that she feels real. Grace Gummer does the most extraordinary job narrating her. She morphs completely into Vanessa, giving the audiobook its own sort of magic. The emotional landscape, the dissociation, the power imbalance, the manipulation, the gaslighting, the emotional abuse and the bullying are portrayed with such accuracy that it breaks my heart how many people fail her throughout.
This is the book I wish I had written. It holds such a special place in my heart and I will always be thankful to Kate Elizabeth Russell for telling this story in a way that made me feel seen. There is a moment where Vanessa says to Henry, “you know how sometimes there’s a book that’s yours?” and that is exactly how I feel about this one. It is mine in a way I cannot fully describe.
It is beautifully and flawlessly written. Powerful. Moving. Emotional. Phenomenal. Truly one in a million. A book that stays with you long after the last page. Every time I finish it I want to go straight back to the beginning. I want this book injected into my veins. I will forever recommend it, although it is not for everyone due to the nature of the subject matter, so please check trigger warnings before reading.
I could write an essay on this book. It is a masterpiece. Incredible.
@authored-evidence thank you.
Will you ever release a special edition of MDV?
hell yeah. I'm not sure the likelihood of that ever happening but yeah totally.
Not a want but a need
Built myself a little Fable shelf and it’s giving pure comfort 🫶🏻
Books, coffee and calm… honestly all I ever want 🩷
I’m currently listening to MDV for the fifth time and it’s just flawless every single time, thank you @authored-evidence for making me feel so seen through your words.
🌻BOOK REVIEW All About Evie Matson Taylor 3.5⭐️ I read this as a stand-alone, which was fine, but I wish I had read The Miseducation of Evie Epworth first so I could learn more about Evie and her life ten years before this book was set. I enjoyed the escape into the 1970s and learning more about London at the time while following Evie and her friends' lives and her rocky relationship with Lolo. I appreciated the LGBT representation, especially during a time when same-sex relationships were not widely understood or accepted. I believe it added to the book's uniqueness. Tandem, thank you so much for including me in this readalong! [pr product] 🌻BLURB 1972. Ten years on from the events of The Miseducation of Evie Epworth and Evie is settled in London working for the BBC. She has everything she's ever dreamed of (a career, a leatherette briefcase, an Ossie Clark poncho) but, following an unfortunate incident involving Princess Anne and a Hornsea Pottery mug, she finds herself having to rethink her life and piece together work, love, grief and multiple pairs of cork-soled platform sandals. Ghosts from the past and the spirit of the future collide in a joyous adventure that sees Evie navigate the choppy waters of her messy twenties. Can a 1960s miseducation prepare her for the growing pains of the 1970s? 🏷 #bookstagram #books #booklover #book #bookworm #bookstagrammer #reading #bookish #bookaddict #booknerd #bibliophile #instabook #booksofinstagram #readersofinstagram #b #read #bookaholic #booksbooksbooks #bookphotography #bookshelf #booklove #love #bookreview #bookcommunity #bookblogger #instabooks #booklovers #reader #igreads #bookrecommendations via @preview.app (at Par, Cornwall) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChZ1rFCIdI7/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
🌻BOOK REVIEW Unexpected Love L. S. Pullen 4⭐️ This is the third book in the Love in Lockdown series and my personal favourite! I adore Liam to the core of my being. His entire demeanour, his respect, his morals, and his fervent love. He truly is an angel and the type of man we all wish to meet. I love the references to previous books and how the characters in all three books are subtly linked. It adds a nice touch to the entire series while allowing the reader to read them as standalones or as a whole series. I was particularly taken with the representation for men's mental health, therapy, and PTSD. It's still a taboo subject, so I appreciated how the author raised awareness about it in this book. If you enjoy romance with a dash of spice, this series is available on Kindle Unlimited! Thank you so much for gifting this series to me. It's been a lot of fun♥️ [pr product] 🌻BLURB Verity Warren’s life has taken a turn she wasn’t expecting. Newly single, she finds herself between homes and back in the one she grew up in. With her parents on a cruise and her brother tucked away at his favourite writing spot, she’s ready to enjoy some peace and quiet. Until she walks in on her brother’s best friend in a precarious position. Liam Carmichael is crashing in his best friend’s room for a few weeks. He’s been struggling to transition back into civilian life after four years in the army. Nothing could’ve prepared him for the aftermath of time served. But Verity just might be what he needs to silence the nightmares. He’s tried to keep his distance from her in the past, but she’s always been his biggest weakness. And now, it’s clear the attraction is mutual. With a global pandemic and nationwide lockdown, they end up giving in to their inhibitions. Can Verity give Liam more than the stolen moments they've shared, or will this unexpected love be more than she's ready for? #ipreview via @preview.app (at Par, Cornwall) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChKwWierYjg/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
🌻BOOK REVIEW Molly and the Dolphins Malachy Doyle & Andrew Whitston 4⭐️ We had a great time accompanying Molly and her father on their adventures on the mermaid, meeting Dot and her little baby dolphin, as well as their other friends, the dolphins. This is a beautiful story about how we can help each other when we are in need, and it is accompanied by some beautiful illustrations. Thank you so much for sending us a copy! This one will be released on the 22nd August 2022!🐬 [pr product] 🌻BLURB Molly’s fisherman father makes her a little dinghy and teaches her to sail. Soon Molly is scudding over the waves, with a pod of dolphins leaping all around. She helps the dolphins when one gets tangled up in a fishing net. But what will happen when it’s Molly who needs help? The dramatic and beautiful sixth book in this acclaimed series by an award-winning author/illustrator team sees young Molly take to the sea with joy, with confidence, and, as always, with kindness. 🏷 #childrensbook #childrensbooks #illustration #kidsbooks #picturebook #bookstagram #kidlit #childrensbookillustration #kidsbook #picturebooks #books #reading #booksforkids #kidsbookstagram #children #art #book #raisingreaders #kidlitart #childrensbookstagram #kids #illustrator #childrensliterature #storytime #bookworm #author #booklover #kidsbookswelove #childrensillustration #readaloud via @preview.app (at Par, Cornwall) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChHo5s9r_2J/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
🌻BOOK REVIEW You’ll Be The Death Of Me Karen M. McManus 3.5⭐️ I was curious to find out what all the fuss was about this author, so when I saw that this audiobook was available, I jumped right in! It's a typical young adult fast-paced thriller that I enjoyed. There was nothing particularly original about it, but I enjoyed the plot and the characters, who were easy to both love and despise, with a couple of twists along the way. Maybe I've just read too many thrillers by now, but it didn't amaze me, which is the reason for my rating. I'm looking forward to reading One Of Us Is Lying and One Of Us Is Next this year though! Overall, I didn't love it, but I also didn't dislike it; it was just okay. ❓Have you read anything by this author? 🌻BLURB Ivy, Mateo and Cal used to be close - best friends back in middle school. Now all they have in common is a bad day. So for old time's sake they skip school together - one last time. But when the trio spot Brian 'Boney' Mahoney ditching class too, they follow him - right into a murder scene. They all have a connection to the victim. And they're ALL hiding something. When their day of freedom turns deadly, it's only a matter of time before the truth comes out . . . 🏷 #bookstagram #books #booklover #book #bookworm #bookstagrammer #reading #bookish #bookaddict #booknerd #bibliophile #instabook #booksofinstagram #readersofinstagram #b #read #bookaholic #booksbooksbooks #bookphotography #bookshelf #booklove #love #bookreview #bookcommunity #bookblogger #instabooks #booklovers #reader #igreads #bookrecommendations via @preview.app (at Par, Cornwall) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChE_7TSra9Z/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
🌻BOOK REVIEW The Ballad of Songbird and Snakes Suzanne Collins 4⭐️ This was my final audiobook of July, and it marked the end of The Hunger Games series for me. I'm not sure what I was expecting going into this one, but it was certainly not what I got. I thought there was a lot going on and a lot of characters introduced in a short period of time, which confused me, but once I figured out who was who, the story flowed nicely and it was interesting to learn more about how The Hunger Games came to be and developed into what it is in the main books, and I enjoyed all the different story lines and how they blended together smoothly. Overall, I think it's a nice addition to the main books! 🌻BLURB Ambition will fuel him. Competition will drive him. But power has its price. It is the morning of the reaping that will kick off the tenth annual Hunger Games. In the Capitol, eighteen-year-old Coriolanus Snow is preparing for his one shot at glory as a mentor in the Games. The once-mighty house of Snow has fallen on hard times, its fate hanging on the slender chance that Coriolanus will be able to outcharm, outwit, and outmaneuvre his fellow students to mentor the winning tribute. The odds are against him. He's been given the humiliating assignment of mentoring the female tribute from District 12, the lowest of the low. Their fates are now completely intertwined - ; every choice Coriolanus makes could lead to favour or failure, triumph or ruin. Inside the arena, it will be a fight to the death. Outside the arena, Coriolanus starts to feel for his doomed tribute... and must weigh his need to follow the rules against his desire to survive no matter what it takes. 🏷 #bookstagram #books #booklover #book #bookworm #bookstagrammer #reading #bookish #bookaddict #booknerd #bibliophile #instabook #booksofinstagram #readersofinstagram #b #read #bookaholic #booksbooksbooks #bookphotography #bookshelf #booklove #love #bookreview #bookcommunity #bookblogger #instabooks #booklovers #reader #igreads #bookrecommendations via @preview.app (at Par, Cornwall) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cg__oewrWJ2/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

🌻BOOK REVIEW One Corfu Summer Francesca Catlow 5⭐️ This is the best novella I've read in a long time, and it's the ideal beach read. Everything about it was fantastic: the LGBT representation, the food and drink, the description of the amazing place that is Corfu, the summer romance, ugh. My heart ached for Alice, Nico, and his family, and the ending made me want to throw my kindle across the room, wanting it to be different but also excited about the possibility of a sequel novella. Francesca has this incredible ability to make me, as a reader, feel as if I'm right there tasting the food and cocktails and joining in on the beach walks and nights out. Thank you so much for gifting me this copy! I adore you, your writing, and this series! [pr product] Nothing is perfect, even in paradise. Alice and her friends escape to Corfu after their first year away at university. When an enraged young man tells Alice off, she tries to ignore him. But there is more to Nico than she could expect and there’s something about Alice that makes Nico want to tell her everything. One Corfu Summer is a novella that features Nico, a character from Catlow’s Little Blue Door Series. If you like raw emotions and passion set to the beautiful backdrop of Greece, then it’s time to take a holiday with One Corfu Summer. 🏷 #bookstagram #books #booklover #book #bookworm #bookstagrammer #reading #bookish #bookaddict #booknerd #bibliophile #instabook #booksofinstagram #readersofinstagram #b #read #bookaholic #booksbooksbooks #bookphotography #bookshelf #booklove #love #bookreview #bookcommunity #bookblogger #instabooks #booklovers #reader #igreads #bookrecommendations via @preview.app (at Par, Cornwall) https://www.instagram.com/p/CgqWLrMIHtg/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
🌻BOOK REVIEW Ebb and Flo and the Greedy Gulls Jane Simmons 4⭐️ We absolutely adore the Ebb and Flo series. It's a sweet little friendship between a girl and her dog, and we enjoy accompanying them on all of their adventures. On this particular adventure, we had fun looking at the cheeky seagulls, but felt sorry for Ebb for getting blamed for eating all the sandwiches, but we loved the cute make-up scene at the end! The illustrations are stunning. This is an excellent bedtime story! Thank you so much for sending us a copy. [pr product] Ebb, Flo, Mum and Bird go for a picnic by the shore, but soon some greedy gulls swoop down to eat all the food and Ebb is blamed. Ebb goes after her favourite place and soaks, but when a storm blows and it’s time to go home, Ebb is nowhere to be seen. A reassuring tale of friendship and forgiveness. 🏷 #childrensbook #childrensbooks #illustration #kidsbooks #picturebook #bookstagram #kidlit #childrensbookillustration #kidsbook #picturebooks #books #reading #booksforkids #kidsbookstagram #children #art #book #raisingreaders #kidlitart #childrensbookstagram #kids #illustrator #childrensliterature #storytime #bookworm #author #booklover #kidsbookswelove #childrensillustration #readaloud via @preview.app (at Par, Cornwall) https://www.instagram.com/p/CgkKe0NL8A9/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
🌻TANDEM READALONG I am so excited to be taking part in the readalong for All About Evie by Matson Taylor with the team at Tandem and some other gorgeous readers! Thank you so much for having me! [pr product] Ten years on from the events of The Miseducation of Evie Epworth, Evie is settled in London and working as a production assistant for the BBC. She has everything she ever dreamed of (a career, a leatherette briefcase, an Ossie Clark poncho) but, following an unfortunate incident involving a Hornsea Pottery mug and Princess Anne, she finds herself having to rethink her future. What can she do? Is she too old to do it? And will it involve cork-soled sandals? As if this isn’t complicated enough, her disastrous love life leaves her worrying that she may be destined for eternal spinsterdom, concerned, as she is, that 'even Paul had married Linda by the time he was 26’. Through it all, Evie is left wondering whether a 60s miseducation really is the best preparation to glide into womanhood and face the new challenges (strikes, power cuts, Edward Heath’s teeth) thrown up by the growing pains of the 70s. With the help of friends, both old and new, she might just find a way through her messy 20s and finally discover who exactly she is meant to be… 🏷 #bookstagram #books #booklover #book #bookworm #bookstagrammer #reading #bookish #bookaddict #booknerd #bibliophile #instabook #booksofinstagram #readersofinstagram #b #read #bookaholic #booksbooksbooks #bookphotography #bookshelf #booklove #love #bookreview #bookcommunity #bookblogger #instabooks #booklovers #reader #igreads #allaboutevie (at Par, Cornwall) https://www.instagram.com/p/CghPzt5o7SY/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
