pandora:
Pandora was never blind to the fact that she stuck out like a sore thumb, but living her life in such a situation it only came naturally to her at this point. She didn’t mind that people’s eyes tended to be on her whenever she was in public but she kept her head down doing what she could to avoid any additional attention if she could. “Unfortunately I haven’t found time to become acquainted with your friend Shakespeare. You’ll have to explain the reference,” she was curious by what he had meant but she shrugged her shoulders glancing back at her drink, “I tend to do as I wish. I don’t see the point in waiting.”
A man trained in many things, Walden had yet to master the art of concealing his thoughts. Particularly poor in doing so while under the influence, his expression shifted. He didn’t understand, and therefore didn’t trust, those who weren’t familiar with the most influential playwright in history; and the way he looked at the blonde made his suspicion clear. “Means to bury the hatchet. May come as a surprise, but I don’t get on well with many of the other regulars here.” Without asking, he took a seat near the woman. “Better be careful with an attitude like that,” he warned. “That’s how people get hurt. ... That’s how you get hurt.”

cassius:
august 16, 1979 dolohov’s funeral. @heis-waldenmacnair
He didn’t want to be there. Then again no one ever wanted to be at a funeral for one of their friends. Cassius knew he should be sad. He knew he should be overwhelmed with shock and grief like many of the people around him were. But he just couldn’t feel that way. All he felt was relief, relief that he hadn’t received news of Augustus’s death. He was relieved that the man he loved was still alive and well. Glancing across the room, he saw Augustus making quiet conversation with some people he didn’t recognize. Normally, he would feel jealous and immediately go over to talk to him, but for today he was just happy to see him breathing.
Cassius shook his head to clear his thoughts before turning to find someone to talk to. The first person he caught sight of was Walden, standing near the back of the room. It had been a while since they last spoke, but the two of them had always been good at picking up their friendship and continuing forward like no time had passed. Sure, they saw each other at Death Eater meetings but those weren’t exactly social events. He walked up and leaned against the wall beside Walden, scanning the crowd of people as he spoke. “I wish it were under better circumstances, but it’s nice to actually have a chance to talk to you.”
The last funeral Walden had attended had been that of his own father, and neither that occasion nor the present one filled him with as much sadness as it appeared to do to those around him. Save his mother and older brother, William, the Macnair family generally wasn’t the sort to mourn the dead or otherwise dwell on the happening of the inevitable. He made an appearance at the sullen event for the sake of showing his respect, though he never did get on well with Dolohov. The death frustrated him purely because it gave Aversio more credit than they were worth. If Augustus and Cygnus had made it out alive, then whatever stalled Antonin’s escape was most likely the result of his own daftness.
The outskirts of the crowd was where men like Walden thrived, listening inconspicuously to conversations others naively believed to be private and successfully avoiding engaging in dreadful, obligatory conversation himself. As the event dragged on, the habit additionally appeared to be granting him a certain level of invisibility from Will and Maria and their son. He nearly moved to find a new spot of seclusion when he saw a figure stop beside him, but the sight of Cassius allowed him to relax. “We knew one of us was going to bite the dust sooner or later. It’s survival of the fittest, now,” He remarked nonchalantly. The comment earned him a dirty look from a passing woman. “And that night it happened to be Black and Rookwood.”

In recent months, Walden Macnair had experienced a significant stray from the manners with which he was raised. As a child, his father taught him the importance of both tying his own tie and killing his own beast. As an adult, life taught him that wars weren’t won because its victors remembered to say please and thank you. The charade of Ministry employee by day and Death Eater by night was a futile facade to maintain, so he retired the mask of a gentleman. He had never cared much for the thoughts and opinions of others, and no longer did he care enough to pretend. As he stood awkwardly against one of the walls of the viewing room, his expression was that of a man obviously only there to show his respects. Perhaps he didn’t care for the living any longer, but he had learned never to disrespect the dead.
If his person was the same as it was in the past, the man would have purposely avoided confrontation with Augustus Rookwood. Their violent fight was one he wouldn’t easily forget and the eruption of anger, once when attacked by Augustus and again when he returned home and had to heal his own broken nose, haunted him like a bad memory. The simple thought of it made his blood boil. Forgiveness wasn’t a gift he was willing to grant, to say the least. Yet, Cassandra’s memory had showed him a side of Augustus that he hadn’t seen before; one that he could possibly respect, if it still existed, and almost certainly blackmail if it didn’t. When the younger man walked passed, Walden saw his opportunity, and approached him.
“Looks like you’ve stolen the show, Rookwood,” He remarked. “If you ask me, it’s honorable that you’re here.” A majority of other guests in attendance certainly didn’t share the sentiment, but the older man respected him for the decision. “It would only look worse if you weren’t. Scandal is gossip made tedious by morality. Oscar Wilde. I’m trying to read new authors. Haven’t decided if I like him or not.”
Your pride is going to get you killed.

alecto:
Alecto wasn’t pleased to find herself in a bar to keep an eye on Walden, yet here she was. She had found many had turned to the bottle to drink away their problems, distasteful and reckless in her opinion. Any moment things could change, and they all needed to keep clear heads and be prepared. A typical man, she thought, her nose wrinkled in disgust at the sight of not only Walden, but other men drinking til their heads were foggy and their words slurred. She would much rather be doing something else of worth, but she had been chosen for this job and she would not disappoint. She was doing everything in her power to prove her worth to the Dark Lord, and if that meant sitting in a bar watching men drink themselves into a coma, then so be it.
Resigned to her fate, she found herself wandering up to the bar to order herself a scotch. One drink would do nothing to impair her own abilities, and perhaps it would curb the headache she already felt forming. She lifted her own glass to take a drink, savoring the burn as it raced down her throat. “So because everyone else drinks you think that’s the answer?” She questioned, raising an eyebrow at the man. “I have to tell you Walden, I’m not sure you’re going to find your answers at the bottom of one of those glasses.”
The voice of reason in the bar was annoyingly familiar, even if only because he had resented it since the moment Alecto and Narcissa were assigned their little task of watching over him. He didn’t need to be watched. On the contrary, he was adamant that it was him who had to watch everyone else, as he had been doing for the past few months, though no one ever wanted to bloody talk about that. Reminding himself to be respectful of the Dark Lord was too great a task after a number of drinks and Emma’s disappearance. Similarly, showing respect to the younger woman had yet to cross his mind. He bared his teeth at her and growled from the back of his throat.
“Don’t try to give me the berries, Carrow,” Walden warned. “I’ll do what I want without the input of a kid.” When his glass returned to him refilled, he took a hefty sip of it, his gaze never wandering from her. “Sober or not, I’m sure as hell not going to find any answers with the way things are now. So why not drink? Everyone else does it,” He repeated. “Everyone else does so much shit. They lie and they betray us, and they’re forgiven. I keep one secret for the first time in twenty tears and I get shit on because of it. Been loyal for twenty goddamn years, and He orders Lestrange to do that shit to me?” He shook his head. “Something’s going wrong with the world.”

pandora:
Pandora hadn’t expected to end up in a bar that evening, but as her usual nights out she didn’t start with any plans. The night had gotten dark before she had expected for it to and she decided to step into a bar to get a drink before heading back to her cage, or rather the castle. She had over heard the statement made by a man that clearly was having a hard night. Still though she raised her eyebrows turning her head to look over at him slightly in amusement, “Only the gentlemen then?” She asked him quietly sure that she hadn’t spoken loud enough to be heard as she turned her focus back on her drink.
As soon as a refilled glass reached his hand, he threw his head back to gulp at the drink. When finished, he slammed the glass onto the bar, and closed his eyes as he waited for the burning in his throat to subside. Then, he looked around for the small voice that had questioned him. The culprit was too obvious, even to a drunken Ravenclaw, as the women surrounding her whispered with each other and the men around her ― well, they were men. “You’re fightin’ with Shakespeare on that one, angel. You never read The Merry Wives of Windsor?” He inquired. “‘Sides, doesn’t look to me like you need much of an invitation to drink.”
