It was downright cruel the way they were all treating Kiara and her friends, Sofia thought, face etched in concern as Ruthie plowed straight through the group all waving their hands at her to stopā to no avail despite their persevering efforts. Ruthie was like that, in the months Sofia got to know herā relentless.
Sofia glanced over at Rafe, who had a small smirk on his face, as if he was trying to hide his glee, but failed, even letting out a little laugh. Her discomfort grew, squirming as she listened to the defensive outcry coming from the other side of the beach.
She inhaled deeply, wrapping her arms around herself. At least it was over now.
But then Sofia heard the low rumble of the engine revving yet again, her frown returning.
The jeep sped up, sending sand flying in its wake, as Ruthie and Topper once gain hurtled past the pogues, who all dove for cover, before Ruthie tipped out her drink over Kiara.
Sofiaās heart sunk for the girl, as she lay on the ground, crestfallen with her hair dripping wet. The way Sofiaās supposed kook friends treated all the pogues made her wonder if theyād do the same thing to her, if it wasnāt for Rafe. The thought made her nauseous, imagining being humiliated the way Kiara was right now and like she was a couple days ago, when sheād overheard Rafe, Topper and Ruthie ridicule her behind her back.
Sofia looked over to Rafe, she didnāt know why, (perhaps for backup, perhaps for comfort), but he remained indifferent, gazing at the scene across the sand with a cool stoicism, lazily sipping at his beer. She shook her head in disdain, finding his behaviour repulsive. She didnāt care about Ruthie, Topper and the othersā she cared about Rafe, still, even after he slandered their relationship to his friends.
Sofia spotted Kiara stride over to them, her face twisted in anger.
āHere she comes guys, on a warpathā get ready.ā Topper teased with a deriding tone. Sofia observed from a safe distance, mouth still pursed in reproach.
āLook what you didā is this ok?ā She yelled, holding out her hands. Sofia peered over to see a baby turtle, crushed in her palms, granules of sand stuck to its lifeless body. Ruthie glanced away, her mouth twisting in an unreadable emotion.
āNo look at it! There was a turtle hatch you idiotsā you drove right over it!ā
Sofia had to avert her gaze, a sickness settling in the pit of her stomach. She hated being on the wrong side of thisā being one of the people Kiara was yelling at.
āAlright but it was only one and I mean look,ā Ruthie pointed out, tone casually cruel, āthereās so many more of them. A hatch is what? A hundred turtles? Most of them donāt make it anyway.ā
āI think itās like one in a thousand.ā Topper added
Kiara shook her head in disbelief. āSo?ā
āSo I think you should go throw that to the seagullsā cycle of life right?ā Ruthie plastered on a scornful smirk, her eyes squinted as she stared down Kiara. Sofia could feel the tension fizzle between them.
āCycle of life? Getting flattened by a truck?ā Kiara jumped up suddenly, shoving Ruthie square in the chest.
Sofia bristled in shock, her arms falling away from around her waist as she stepped back from the commotion. Looking around for Rafe, she found him topping up his empty beer bottle, just disregarding the spat completely. She couldnāt help but scoff in annoyance at his as insouciance whilst Topper pulled back Ruthie and JJ reined in Kiara.
āYour move Kie, what are you gonna do?ā Ruthie goaded.
Topper held out his hands placatingly, āI would just walk away ok? Weāre not doing this.ā
āThereās something seriously wrong with you people.ā Kiara avowed, Sofia glancing down at her feet at her words, a sinking shame tricking its way down her insides, before Kiara spun around back to her friends.
āYeah thatās right, go back to your side Kie!ā Ruthie called out, right before Kiara shoved their speaker to the ground.
āYou come near her or any of us ever again, and Iāll come back and kill every single one of you.ā JJ warned, before joining Kiara as they walked away.
Sofia hated this. Hated all of it. Her frown was stark on her face as she ignored the chitters of laughs and fragments of conversation around her, from people she barely knew.
She huffed a deep breath, before stepping back to look for Rafeā someone familiar, someone comfortable.
āI mean did you see that?ā Ruthie commented as she walked past Rafe, Sofia hovering a couple feet away from him. She was waiting for him to say somethingā¦anything. He couldāve put a stop to thisā Topper wouldāve listened to him. But no, all he did was watch in silence, drinking like he always did.
āI saw it. All good shit, Ruthie.ā He chuckled. Sofia crossed her arms around herself yet again. All good? It wasnāt all good, and she wished that her boyfriend had done something. These were his friends, not hers.
Sofia waited for him to come her way, her hands resting on her hips, face a picture of dismay. He locked eyes with her, and she hoped heād apologise, criticise what had just occurred. say anything, but all he did was look at her with embarrassment, as if he forgot she was there.
āNot cool Rafe.ā She scorned, as he walked past her to take a seat in one of the beach chairs, inciting Sofiaās rage to burn hot and fast.
āThey deserved it,ā he muttered.
āI wanna leave.ā She instructed, her lips twisting in ire when he had to audacity to glance back at her with shock.
āNow!ā She spun around, not waiting for him to follow, ready to gather all her things and head home, her mind swirling with shame, rage and disgust.
āWhat do you mean you wanna leave? We just got here!ā He called out from behind her, as she frantically stuffed the sun screen and lotion into her beach bag.
āYou serious right now Rafe? You feel good about what just happened?ā
Some of the people surrounding them cast glances their way, beginning to whisper and quietly snicker behind shrouding hands.
āOoo Rafeās in trouble,ā one person chided.
āWhyās she so pressed for?ā Another pestered.
āBecause sheās a pogue herselfā didnāt you know?ā
Sofia didnāt care though, but she could tell Rafe did.
āLook just chill ok? I thought you wanted to sunbathe?ā
āYeah well I donāt anymoreā I want to go home.ā Sofia pulled her tube top over her bikini as Rafe warily eyed everyone around them.
āBaby, just stop a minute yeah?ā He tried a more consoling tone, which only cause Sofia to get even more angry.
She stepped through her white skirt, slipping on her sandals, and hoisted her beach bag over one shoulder, before wrapping her arms across her chest.
āIām going.ā She said with a stern face, turning on her heel ready to leave the beach.
Rafe ran a hand through his cropped hair, cursing under his breath before following Sofia down the sandy trail where his car was parked.
āWhy are you so mad for?ā Rafe wandered after her, easily keeping up with Sofiaās irascible stride with his long legs.
āThe fact you have to ask me that is making more angry.ā
āOh come on, it was Ruthie and Topper, what was I supposed to do?ā
Sofia stopped in her tracks, swivelling around to face him. They were far away from everyone else at the beach, protected by the thicket of trees encircling them.
āYou couldāve said somethingā anything, but instead you just stood there and watched.ā
āYeah well I didnāt see you speak up either.ā He muttered with an eye roll.
She scoffed, piercing him with her unwavering stare, ābecause in case youāve forgotten Rafe, Iām a pogue too. You heard they way they were speaking about themā how do you think theyād react if another pogue told them to shut up huh?ā
Sofiaās words were thinly veiled from her own insecurities, her hurt and rage at his previous comments resurfacing like flotsam that thrashed in the waters of her heart.
āIām not living with a pogueā¦I have standardsā¦ā
āYouāre notā¦ā he trailed off, for once thinking before her spoke. āitās different.ā He didnāt elaborate how it was different though.
āWhatever Rafe, I saw you laugh and smile as if it was just some big jokeā it wasnāt funny, it was straight up bullying.ā
Rafe let out a short laugh, ābullying?ā He scoffed, āthatās nothing compared to what they all did, they deserve whatever bad shit comes their way Sofia.ā
āYeah well I want no part in it.ā
She left him, heading to his car, getting in the passengers seat with a sigh. She hated fighting with him. They both could be so different sometimes, and when they didnāt see eye to eye, it was never a good thing. She was stubborn like her father and Rafe was soā¦ragefulā never towards her though, but when he felt strongly about something, she could feel it radiating off his body in scalding waves.
A moment passed before he got into the drivers seat. She could see him pace the leaf-strewn path, his ring clad fingers running though his buzz cut and he breathed in and out. She rolled her eyes at his dramatics.
The car door shut behind him with a loud bang, Sofia unable to see his face since sheād twisted away from him.
āAre you going to be mad at me for the rest of the day now?ā He asked, tone sharp, as he tried to make eye contact with her.
Sofia just shrugged non-committaly, gazing out of the window.
āI did nothing wrong Sofia.ā He tried to reason.
āYou didnāt do the right thing either.ā
Rafe didnāt respond to that.
She felt his hand hover over her knee, ālook Sof, I donāt want to fight with you ok? Especially over something as stupid as this, yeah?ā
She turned round to face him, her mouth still folded in a frown, āI want to go.ā
He retracted his hand from her leg with a deep sigh, āfineā stay mad.ā
Rafe had tried everything to get her to speak to him normally again. When they reached the house sheād left straight away to have a shower, locking the doorā she never usually locked the door.
And when she got out, she got dressed and went and made her own dinner as the sun began to set, the sky doused in the orange glow of the Outer Banks.
Rafe entered the kitchen, hoping to try and make amends yet again.
āHey baby, what you making?ā He murmured gently, sliding his hands around her waist from behind. His fingers brushed away the strands of her freshly shampooed hair, the decadent smell of strawberries filling his nose as he inched his head down to press soft kisses against her neck.
She quickly shrugged him off.
āIām not in the mood Rafe.ā
Stepping back, he tried to hide his dejected expression, leaving her to cook alone in the kitchen, disappearing in the study to let her have the house to herself for a bit. Maybe then sheād cool down.
It was getting lateā theyād usually go to sleep around this time. So Rafe got up, shutting his laptop and left to go to their bedroom.
He heard Sofia brush her teeth in the en suite so he went and sat down on the mattress, waiting for her to come to bed.
After a while, she did, entering the room an impassive expression on her face. He tried to smile at her, but she didnāt look his way, instead walking up to the bed and grabbing a blanket, turning back around again.
āWait, where are you going?ā He asked getting up from off the bed, his brows stitched on confusion.
She remained calm, face as still as a lake. āIām sleeping on the couch,ā she said plainly, as if it was the most normal thing in the world.
āSofiaā¦ you canāt still be mad at me?ā
āIām not madā¦I just need some space.ā
āI wonāt get too close then.ā
Sofia shook her head, ānight Rafe,ā she said softly, before heading out of the room, blanket trailing behind her, leaving him to curse exasperatedly under his breathā leave it to the Pogues to find a way to mess with his relationship too.
After an hour or so fruitlessly grasping at sleep, Rafe paced the bedroom, biting at his thumb.
āYou didnāt do the right thing either.ā
Sofiaās words spun around his brain, making him think about all the shit heād done. The memory of seeing Sarah today had lingered with him surprisingly, their silent gaze across the windswept beach reminding him of the terse look they shared a year and half ago on the tarmac, where he unknowingly sent his father to his death.
āLook itās Sarah, do you think sheād want to talk?ā
Sofia had asked him as she sat beside him earlier on the warm sand, with that sweet, gentle voice of hers. She always seemed to nudge him to do the right thingā the moral thing. And he always seemed to do the opposite. Rafe realised he couldnāt stand to disappoint her.
Quietly exiting the bedroom, he pattered down the stairs, heading to the living room. There she was, nestled into the sofa, the blanket fallen on to the floor. Rafe smiled to himself seeing her look so pretty and serene, noiselessly approaching and draping the blanket over her exposed legs.
He then meandered over to the gaping window, the cerulean night sky silhouetted by the swarthy trees and faint shape of boats lining the dock.
His eyes snagged on to the picture frames heād packed from Tannyhill, the final memory of the family he once had. In all honesty, he was going to put them in the trash, or at least let them gather dust in some storage unit miles away; Sofia had been the one to convince him to keep them when she was helping him move out of Tannyhill all those many months ago.
āTheyāre your family Rafe, you canāt just throw them away like that, come on Iāll help you pack them up.ā
It hurt to see that picture of him when he was in his early teens, making Sarah what? Ten? Eleven? Because all he could think about was how she looked when he held her under the waterā the terror in her eyes, the tremble of her body. Sheād turned into a little girl in that moment, so frail and scared..
āItās Sarahā¦itās your sisterā¦please stop.ā
Sheād begged, clutching at him, clawing at him. The recollection made him nauseous.
His father used to always say āFamily is the most important thingā and here he was alone and unmoored, his two baby sisters no longer with him. His heart ached with a sudden and deep grief, as if heād just realised the extent of what heād lost.
But he wasnāt completely aloneā¦he still had Sofia. He sometimes thought of her like lightā she had this effervescent, incandescent quality to her. The way her eyes would light up like liquid gold, how her hair glinted bronze in the sun, her smile exuding lustre. Sheād make him feel lighter too. Rafe mulled over her words again.
She had a pointā he didnāt do the right thing. And he was going to fix that by amending his relationship with Sarah, getting Wheezie back from Roseās clutches, and finally start a family of his ownā with the woman he loved. Sofia wouldnāt lead him astray.
Rafe walked over to her slumbering body, crouching down as quiet as he could be, taking a seat next to her. She stirred slightly, but stayed fast asleep, almost subconsciously nearing him in her dream state. The thought brought a small smile to his face.
His thinking drifted back to the morning, when they were getting ready for the beach. She was telling him how maybe Hollisā deal was legit, about how the patrons of the club were all gunning for it.
Rafe knew how to show her he listened, show her he valued herā heād take Sofiaās advice seriously. And with Goat Island soon to be his, Rafe could start that new life and finally start that family, all with Sofia by his side.
Oh for sure rafe and kie are going to be more like revenge besties.

sofia still matters a lot to rafe and i donāt necessarily think the rekindling of his relationship with sarah will be a catalyst to forgive sofia bc their separate things but his heavy trust in her andĀ previous prominent presence will be missed, i think for him itāll get to the point where along with the elephant in the room with the murder (and his promise wtv it was to tell shoupe where his past actions catches up to reality) plus he ended up forgiving ward so heāll be in a place to forgive her, itāll take time but she still has a place in his heart i mean he wanted to marry her ffs, that level of commitment (despite his tendency to emotionally latch onto individuals due to his loneliness) is a big step for him, sheās probably a lot of firsts for him and sofiaās reaction to the murder i think could still be an obstacle but not as much as people think tbh bc sheās quite perceptive about his character, like she knows who he is around topper and ruthie is just a facade. and after this they live happily ever afterš

I love this sm!! Yes I agree, I think Rafe will assess Sofia differently than how he judges Sarah, because Sarah is family and he has Wardās influence still in his head. With Sofia, he truly only was with her because he loved her, so their reconciliation will come from a different place.
I have no idea how it will play out though, but I agree, I think Sofia does have incredible empathy and true love for Rafe. I wonder how she reacted to his cruel words? Did she maybe think his reaction was warranted (as we saw her carry a lot of guilt in the proposal scene)? Or did she think his callous comments were unnecessary and will refute any attempt at rekindling if Rafe tried to fix things?
Hey, Iām doing thin anonymously because Iām quite ashamed of my own thoughts, but in the beginning I was quite bitter Rafe got (very beautiful and lovely!!) girl but now Iāve forced myself into shock therapy and binge every poste about this ship and I have to thank you for helping for getting out of this toxic almost fictophillic (?) relationship. Sofia entered the party, her arm wrapped around Rafeās, eyeing the rowdy crowds of kooks all drunk or on their way to it. She instinctively tightened her arm around her boyfriend.
The sun was settling as Kelceās house party started to set in motion, the heavy bass thumping and the drinks continually flowing.
Sofia quickly scanned what the other girls were wearing, making sure she didnāt stick out. Her slip dress held on by flimsy straps was something sheād worn beforeā she hoped no one would notice.
It was funny to her how she cared more about what Rafeās friends thought of her than what Rafe thought. She supposed it was because whenever it was just her and Rafe, those insecurities never used to bite. It was always when sheād hang out with Topper, Kelce and Ruthie the anxiety began to eat at her.
Spotting Topper in the crowd, she gave him a small smile, before Rafe dropped her arm and went to embrace his friend.
āHey Top!ā He laughed, smile wide and words loud. Sofia always felt so small next to himā both in size and importance. With Rafeās arm no longer there to hold, she felt unmoored, drifting in a sea of unfamiliar faces. But of course she did recognise a few: the people sheād serve at the bar. And she knew they recognised her too. It always stung when sheād see the gears slowly turn in their head, glancing from her to Rafe. They were always soā¦ confusedā what was a pogue doing with Rafe Cameron?
The party was the same as all the parties before it. Rafe, Topper and Kelce being loud and obnoxious, Sofia sticking with Rafe when he was away from them, and when heād leave her, sheād stick with Ruthie, whoād always ask weird and invasive questions: So how are you and Rafe? He giving you any trouble? Youāre always together, do you not get tired of each other? You guys moved in yet?
Sofia would give short, vague answers, never calling her out on her shit, because she knew how ruthless Ruthie could beā sheād never want to be on her bad side.
So thatās what she was doing, sipping at her drink whilst listening to Ruthie bitch about some other girl, (after sheād interrogated Sofia about her love life of course), when she heard a loud commotion come from the kitchen.
Sofia watched Ruthieās eyes gloss over with glee, darting in the direction of the clamour. Sofia tagged along, leaving her drink on the mantle piece, only to see her boyfriend yell like a crazy person at someone she didnāt recognise with Topper behind him, trying to rein him back like he was a feral animal.
āThis is our Homebase!ā Rafe yelled, his voice making Sofiaās body squirm. āGet the fuck off our property, think you can just freeload like the good for nothing pogues you are?ā
The group of guys rushed out the party, a crate of beer slotted under their arm, which they presumably stole, leaving Rafe enraged. Whenever he got like this he looked like he enjoyed it, his eyes glistening with a manic sheen, his lips contorted in a sneering smile. It disturbed Sofia.
Ruthie skipped over to Topper, swinging her long arms around his neck, whilst Rafe continued to let off steam.
āComing from the Cut and stealing our shit? That we earned. Itās not right, they need to be taught a lesson.ā He yelled, drinking straight from the vodka bottle.
Sofiaās stomach pooled with shame. She sometimes wondered if Rafe thought of her like thatā like a freeloading, good for nothing pogue.
Rafe spotted her sidelining the uproar, his face breaking out in a smile as he approached her.
āBaby! There you are!ā He greeted, voice still suspended in a yell. He draped a heavy arm around her, dragging her into his body heat. āHow you finding the party?ā
She looked up at him, as he swung back another swig of alcohol.
āI want to go home.ā She said, looking up at him with wide eyes.
His brow furrowed, nose twitching in confusion, ābut we just got here?ā
āI donāt careā Iām leaving.ā She untangled herself from his grip, weaving her way through the throng of people, grateful to finally exit and inhale the sharp, cold night air.
She waited for Rafe outside, knowing heād follow, wrapping her arms to shield herself from the wind.
And like clockwork, he slipped out the house a moment later, running around to face her. āSofia? Whatās wrong huh?ā
She was angry and she knew he could tell, from the way his demeanour shifted from the cocky, slick, drink swinging guy from inside to the now twitchy and confused Rafe who was scared of pushing her too far.
āYou yelling to everyone about how much you despise pogues while Iām standing right there? You know how stupid that makes me look?ā She said, tone harsh.
Rafe glanced around, checking if anyone overheard, āletās go home yeah?ā He suggested, leading her to his car, his hands on her shoulder.
Sofia wanted to scream at him, let all his kook friends see him get shouted at by a pogue instead, but deep down inside she didnāt want to embarrass him, wanting to live up to the impossibly pristine expectation of being Rafe Cameronās girlfriend.
So she let him open the car door for her, helping her get in, slipping into the drivers seat a moment later.
āI donāt understand why youāre upset,ā Rafe said, turning to face her once the car door was shut.
Her eyebrows furrowed, āwhen you insult pogues youāre insulting me. Youāre calling me a good for nothing free loader, youāre calling me a thief, youāre calling my family scum. Donāt you understand that?ā
Rafeās confusion only proliferated, his nose turning up, his lips screwing in disbelief, ābaby they stole our beerā I was shouting at them, not at you or your family.ā
āYeah they did, but not because theyāre pogues Rafe, thereās some kooks who are just as bad.ā
āI know that, I wasnāt being serious Sofia.ā
āYeah well sometimes it feels like it is serious.ā

Rafe let out a sigh, eyes scanning Sofiaās āwhatās mine is yours, you know that right?ā
āRafe, just stop with all the pogue talk ok? I donāt like it,ā she said, tone dismal and exasperated.
āOk ok itās done. Anything for my girl, aināt that right?ā He said with a smirk, swooping his face down to hers. It was hard for Sofia to remain angry at him, not when he smiled at her like that. She rolled her eyes, lips curving into a grin.

āI say we should go home and Iāll make sure youāre not a free loading pogue.ā His tone was playful as he brushed the hair off her neck, his breath hot against her pulse point.

Rafe also began to chuckle, eyes crinkling at the sides. She could tell he was relieved their little spat was over. Despite always being involved in many fights with others, Rafe seemed to hate whenever theyād fight with one another. āyeah well youāre blushing so it wasnāt that bad.ā

āWait has she moved in yet?ā Ruthie smirked, eyeing Rafe over the lip of her glass as she took a sip.
Sofia thought about her things scattered across Rafeās house: her clothes in the drawers, the flowers sheād buy sitting in the vases, her toothbrush next to his in the bathroom. She hadnāt moved in but she may as well have.
āIām not living with a pogue.ā Sofia blinked in confusion at his callous words. She couldnāt see Rafeās face, but she saw Ruthie and Topperās faces perfectly. They were gleeful. Thatās what she was to themā a joke. The poor, pogue bartender Rafe dragged around everywhere. And of course she followed blindly. Like a good dog. Sofiaās stomach frothed and roiled with nausea, her heart splintering in her rib cage. Heartbreak was one thing, mortification was anotherā¦her face burned with both.
āI hope not.ā Ruthie chimed.
āI have standards.ā Rafe muttered. Sofiaās eyes roamed Rafeās back, the sinewy muscle imprinting on the material. The skin sheād kissed, the skin sheād grip. And now he was turning away from her. Shunning her. Twisting a knife in her heart. The rest of their words faded away like mist in the wind, leaving only the weight of emotion on Sofiaās shoulders. She wrapped her arms tightly around herself, in some self-soothing hug, as she sped back to her car, her breathing shallow and painful.
Standards. Of course Rafe Cameron had standards. And of course a girl like her didnāt meet them.
āSofia!ā She heard a voice call out behind her, barely perceptible over the sound of blood rushing through her head.
āSofia!ā This time she noticed, turning around to see no other than Rafe approach her, a smile on his lips, as if those same lips didnāt just spew all that shit about her moments earlier.
āHey I thought you were with your family today?ā He asked, nearing her outside the country club gates.
Sofia spun back around with a scoff, heading to her car, not wanting to see his face for an another second, scared sheād burst into tears in front of him.
He bridged the gap between them almost instantly, his long legs striding towards her just as she reached her car door. By this point the tears in her eyes had spilled onto her cheeks, her vision blurring into a watery film.
Rafeās hand rested on her shoulder, as he turned her body gently to face his.
āHeyā hey heyā Sofia, whatās wrong?ā He said on seeing her crying, his voice soft like gossamer. It perturbed her how quickly he could flit from cold to caring, her anger veining into confusion at the paradox of a man in front of her.
āGet off of me,ā she pushed him off her, trying to sound intimidating but instead the words came out in a blubbering mess.
āHey? What happened huh?ā Rafeās face screwed in confusion. His words came off as desperate. Pleading. Sincereā¦ his hands hovering over her skin, still in the same place she pushed them off from. He could be so damn sweet sometimes. Maybe this was why his words pierced hardā because she never expected it from him.
āYou Rafe. You happened.ā She hissed, spinning around to get in her car.
But Rafe moved quicker, his big arms slamming the door shut, caging her small frame between them.
āWhat are you saying?āā he began.
āI heard what you said. With Topper and Ruthie.ā
She watched as his pupils widened, his jaw tightening.
āWhatā whenā¦?ā
Sofia rolled her eyes. āJust cause we hook up doesnāt mean Iām your girlfriend right?ā She mocked, throwing his words back at him.
āSofiaāā his face sunk, blue eyes getting even bluer.
ā18 months Rafe. Nearly two years and thatās what I am to you? A hook up?ā
āNo,ā he said, the word practically jumping out his mouth, āno of course not. Look you werenāt meant to hear thatāā
āSo that makes it ok then? For you to degrade me like that in front of your friends?ā
āNo, look I just wasā I didnāt meanāā he was stuttering, his hands reaching out to her, but never connecting the space.
āI was there for you Rafe. Did you just forget that?ā She thought about holding him, teary eyed on his yacht, consoling him for the death of his father. She thought about the nights where heād pepper her with kisses, his touch bordering on worship. She thought about his laugh, his smile, his sweet nothings. All that gone, as if it was always ephemeral.
āNo. I know you were there, and I appreciate it, more than you thinkā ok?ā
āBut Iām just a pogue right?ā She derided, a sarcastic, pained leer twisted on her lips.
Rafeās face contorted in an emotion she couldnāt place, his azure irises brewing with something darker. He lookedā¦devastated.
But she continued her barrage, words sharp, tongue fast. āAnd you have standards of course.ā
Lips twitched, eyebrows knitted in a hurt expression, Rafeās face bled into a heady emotion, a strange mix of regret and anger.
āSofiaā¦ā be began warily, voice like husk. Rafe instinctively lowered his hands, trying to find purchase on the skin of her shoulders but she slipped out of his grip like smoke from fire.
āIām sorry I couldnāt meet them for you Rafe.ā
And with that she got into the drivers seat, slamming the car door shut, trying hard not to spare another glance at him.
Careeing out the parking lot with the screech of her tyres behind her, Sofia couldnāt help but chance a look in the rear view mirror. Rafe stood in the distance watching as she drove away, his hands balled into fists at his sides.
Sofiaās heart spasmed with a resounding pain, her throat itching with unshed sobs. She quickly glued her eyes on the road, her fingers gripping the steering wheel as she drove further away from the country club back to her home on The Cutā¦driving further away from the kook sheād fallen in love with. The kook whoād just shattered everything they had built together.
I WATCHED ALL THE EPISODES!!! here are my thoughts on Rafeās characterisation!! ok spoilers ahead:
I donāt agree with everyone saying rafe is out of character. Firstly, heās always been insecure. Heās always needed someone to reassure him and be his yes man: (topper, Ward, Barry even Wheezie). So itād make sense heād do the same thing with Sofiaā asking her for advice, making sure heās doing the right thing etc etc.
Secondly everyone saying that him not being psycho is out of character doesnāt make any sense. When he was āpsychoā he was off his head with coke. In season 3 we see him clean and instead heās turned to alcohol. So itād make sense for him to be this drunk, playboy persona and desperately try to cling to the āman of the houseā vibe he established in s3.
Thirdly, everyone saying itās cringe or not correct for him to act soft with Sofiaā¦we donāt know how he acts with a girl. Sure we have fanfic interpretations, but those are often exaggerated and unrealistic. Rafe lowkey seems pathetic and clearly unstable after the death of his dad. Heās seeking comfort in Sofia, that much is obvious, and Iād say thatās pretty spot on for himā especially with how heās not committing to the relationship (saying sheās just a friend, just a hookup) whilst simultaneously telling her he wants to start a life with her. This back and forth sway from two opposites is very in character of him. Like how he went from trying to kill his sister to feeling guilty, to trying to kill his dad but then saving him. Heās unstable. That doesnāt mean heās solely angry and violent. It also means he needs an outlet to be vulnerable (and seeing his softer side is such a nice thing guys come on!!)
And finally, everyone saying Sofia is just a cookie cutter āy/nā stereotype is not giving her enough credit. We see her wildly different life, with a big family and her little home on the cut, directly contrasting the massive, devoid of family house that belongs to Rafe. That storyline has sm potential!! Like imagine rafe meeting her family and realising what a family should look like!!! She also clearly doesnāt vibe with his friends and the kooks, and she clearly likes him. The way theyāre always touching each other, always near each other, this weirdly codependent relationship has sm layers to explore!! And rafe clearly cares about her, letting her tell him what to do, her little disappointed looks that make him overthink! Everytime theyāre on screen, the vibe is undeniable!!
