Vaggi could tell something was wrong with Adam. It wasn’t so much what he said or how he said it, but his aura seemed to be dimmed.
Charlie also seemed to watch him closer, which made Vaggi pay closer attention.
Had he done something to Charlie?
Memories of those years in Heaven’s army filled her mind, making her terrified that Charlie may have been exposed to such heartlessness. While Adam never raised his hand to the girls, he didn’t stop Lute from exercising extreme force when training.
But, it that was the case, the. Why would Adam seem almost sad? Charlie wouldn’t tell her so Vaggi was forced to figure it out by herself.
One evening, Vaggi approached Adam after the redemption exercises were done. She made a note that his eyes were looking upwards, probably towards Heaven and what he was hoping for.
“Adam, we need to speak.”
Adam turned to Vaggi, that cocky grin on his face. It seemed natural, it seemed normal. But it wasn’t.
“Sure! What’s ya needing Vagina?”
Vaggi took a deep breath, choosing not to rise to the bait. One thing Adam could be really good at was deflecting when he thought someone would get too close. He was hoping she would get angry and walk away.
But she wasn’t about to do that today.
“What happened between you and Charlie?”
Adam blinked, confusion upon his face. “What the fuck are you talking about?”
“Charlie has been watching you, closely. What did you do?”
Adam narrowed his eyes. “What makes you think I did anything?” His tone was low and almost angry, but there was something else there, something Vaggi didn’t recognize.
“It wasn’t her,” Vaggi said firmly. “She doesn’t have a harsh bone in her body.”
Adam gave a humorless chuckle. “You’d be fucking surprised just what your little girlfriend can do,” he said. “But sorry to say that I didn’t fucking do anything.”
“Then why is she watching you?”
Adam shrugged. “No fucking clue. That’s her business.”
Vaggi was getting close to blowing up. “Adam, you cannot expect me to believe that you do nothing.”
Adam rolled his eyes. “Well, I did nothing. Why she’s watching me when she got exactly what she wanted is news to me. Now, I’m going to my room. See ya later, Vagina.”
Adam turned and walked away and back up the stairs. Vaggi was frustrated with the conversation. She was no closer to figuring out what had happened.
She sat at the bar and sighed, looking out at the room when the front door opened and Lucifer walked in.
No one had seen the King for about a week. Charlie said he was away handling Hell business and would come back when he was done.
She noticed Lucifer seemed down, almost sad. Weird that it was almost the same as Adam…
Vaggi flicked her eyes up to Adam, who had stopped moving and was standing on the landing and was now looking down into the lobby area.
She watched as his expression softened, the sadness deepened and he quickly turned and walked back down the hallway and disappearing towards his bedroom.
Vaggi looked back at Lucifer, who was chatting with Charlie. Charlie was gently rubbing Lucifer’s shoulders and giving him a sad smile.
Lucifer said something before his eyes moved up to the landing area where Adam had just stood, his own eyes sad. He said said something more to Charlie before he disappeared in a swirl of red.
Charlie had a sad smile on her face as she watched her father leave. Vaggi had to know what was going on now.
She may be poking her nose into Lucifer’s business and while Adam wasn’t her father, he had been her commander. She still held some respect for the position, even if she dint respect Adam himself. It was ingrained into all the exorcist angels, even ones that were no longer connected to Heaven.
Charlie turned to Vaggi and gave her a huge smile. “Hey, what’s up?”
Charlie nodded. “Yep, he’s all done for now so he came back. He was looking a little better.”
Vaggi raised an eyebrow. “What happened?”
Charlie’s smile vanished, her face falling and becoming filled with sadness. “I…I think I might have ruined a chance for him to be happy. He…confessed to someone and I happened to overhear it. I don’t react the best.” She looked up towards Lucifer’s tower. “Then Dad was rejected and it was clear that it broke his heart. I have been thinking on it all week, but…I don’t know what to say…to either of them.”
Vaggi watched as Charlie looked back at her, her eyes sad. Vaggi blinked as the dots began to connect.
Lucifer had confessed to…Adam? And Adam reflected him after Charlie reacted badly?
Charlie sighed. “I called them a…homewreaker… and then I told Dad he could leave if he was going to hurt Mom like that.”
That made sense. Adam was a lot of things, most of which Vaggi hated. But he never got involved with anyone who was in a relationship. Didn’t matter if they threw themselves at him or not, he never hooked up with those people. He hated people who broke relationships.
Yet, he had been put in a position where he was called something he hated.
“Don’t think they…felt the same?”
Charlie shrugged. “I’m not sure. I’ve been watching, but…” she sighed. “I just don’t know.”
Charlie looked at Vaggi, shock on her face. “What?”
Vaggi turned and looked at where Adam had disappeared on his way back to his bedroom. He had been looking at Lucifer with longing and sadness.
‘She got exactly what she wanted…’
Adam had said that, and now Vaggi knew why. He had rejected Lucifer because Charlie hadn’t approved. Why he had done that, she still didn’t know for sure, but it was clear that Charlie’s words had affected Adam’s decision.
He had broken Lucifer’s heart, and possibly his own too, for Charlie.
Vaggi knew that this air of sadness couldn’t continue, there had to be a way to fix it.
A knock on the front door drew both women’s attention. Charlie walked over and, which a big smile on her face, opened it.
“Welcome to the Haz…Mom?”
Lilith smiled. “I told you I was coming,” she said before stepping forward and pulling her daughter into a tight hug.
Charlie, who hadn’t seen her mother in years, wrapped her arms around her and returned the hug, tears filling her eyes.
She may not know how to help her Dad, or what to do about that situation, but right now her mother was back.
She was going to live in this moment for a while.
Another short scene that I wrote on a whim this evening before heading to bed. Vaggi is involved and Lilith is back, but Adam and Lucifer still haven’t spoken since that day.
Will Luci get another chance to give Adam that cute duck? Will Adam find out Lucifer is actually divorced? Will Charlie finally apologize? Who knows?
