Interview with “Our Planet. Theirs Too.” Founder
Helpglobal talked to Aylam Orian about his important organization “Our Planet. Theirs Too.”
Interview by Sarah Lynn Dawson
How did your organization start?
I was always an animal lover, but when I went vegetarian in 2006, and later vegan in 2011, I decided do more for animals, on a grander scale. I volunteered for a few animal rights groups in my city at the time (New York), but didn’t really feel that my skills and strengths were being used in the various actions I attended. I then happened to travel in Spain in 2011 and saw a group called Igualdad Animal (Animal Equality) doing a silent video protest in the street, and their kind of respectful but potent activism really struck home for me. I decided to bring it to New York, and so when I got back I gathered a few animal rights friends and we stared doing similar silent video protests in the streets of New York. That was the start.
Why do you believe this is important?
I just love animals so much (most people do) but the things we, the human race, to do them are simply unimaginable. Unimaginable cruelty, and pain and suffering. To billions of them, in every industry that uses animals for human consumption (food, clothing, testing, entertainment, etc.). This needs to stop. In addition, we now know that consumption of animal products is not only bad for human health, it is also a major cause for global warming, deforestation, water and air pollution, and environmental destruction. So any way you look at it, the human race’s reliance on animals needs to stop, and switch to plants.
For those that aren’t aware of you, what do you do?
Our non-profit “Our Planet. Theirs Too.” has several projects, the most known of which are: The National Animal Rights Day (NARD) – a global day commemorated every June in more than 35 cities around the world, to celebrate animals and educate the public about their plight; and The Declaration of Animal Rights – a document detailing all the rights animals should have, which has been translated to multiple languages and signed by 30,000 people around the world.
What is the best advice you can give people wanting to make a change?
You can implement change gradually, and slowly transition your life from animal (living beings with families, offspring, and lives of their own)-based, to plant-based. Find plant-based alternatives to the products you are currently using, and start phasing those old products out of your life. But it’s always important to keep your “why” strong and clear in your head. When you know why you are doing this (to save animals, to save the planet, to save your own health), and it’s important to you, then everything else becomes easy and doable!
What upcoming plans do you have?
Oh lots… but mainly, we are starting to gear towards the National Animal Rights Day 2020 – Sunday June 7, 2020! In a city near you!
Who inspires you and why?
People like Joaquin Phoenix, Moby, Morrissey, Woody Harrelson, James Cromwell – they are not afraid to ‘walk the walk’ and use their celebrity status to educate the masses, by personal example, and by their words and deeds, about the plight of animals and the ethical, non-cruelty (vegan) way of life.
