Stop dickriding Silco i beg of you
Hello! Big fan of your work here, I hope this is not too insensitive to ask, but was that hp fanfic you wrote deleted purposefully?
Hi!! It was! I'm so sorry if you were a fan - I didn't realize it still had fans haha after not being updated in so long. I tried very hard with HP because it was my first fandom and got me into writing as a child to separate art from the artist with J.K Rowling and her extremely horrific transphobic views - especially because since I was writing Tomarry, I figured she wouldn't have approved of my work anyway. However, I think over the years she has simply gotten worse and more outspoken, especially with praising Trump for his transphobic legislation but never commenting on his other fascist policies or racism. Every time I see her posting on Twitter I feel disgusted. I'd considered deleting my HP story before and finally just went for it, as I was uncertain if I'd ever return to writing it despite how much work was initially put in.
HOUSE OF THE DRAGON (2022—) 1.01 "The Heirs of the Dragon" // 2.08 "The Queen Who Ever Was"
There’s also a large grey area between an Offensive Stereotype and “thing that can be misconstrued as a stereotype if one uses a particularly reductive lens of interpretation that the text itself is not endorsing”, and while I believe that creators should hold some level of responsibility to look out for potential unfortunate optics on their work, intentional or not, I also do think that placing the entire onus of trying to anticipate every single bad angle someone somewhere might take when reading the text upon the shoulders of the writers – instead of giving in that there should be also a level of responsibility on the part of the audience not to project whatever biases they might carry onto the text – is the kind of thing that will only end up reducing the range of stories that can be told about marginalized people.
A japanese-american Beth Harmon would be pidgeonholed as another nerdy asian stock character. Baby Driver with a black lead would be accused of perpetuating stereotypes about black youth and crime. Phantom Of The Opera with a female Phantom would be accused of playing into the predatory lesbian stereotype. Romeo & Juliet with a gay couple would be accused of pulling the bury your gays trope – and no, you can’t just rewrite it into having a happy ending, the final tragedy of the tale is the rock onto which the entire central thesis statement of the play stands on. Remove that one element and you change the whole point of the story from a “look at what senseless hatred does to our youth” cautionary tale to a “love conquers all” inspiration piece, and it may not be the story the author wants to tell.
Sometimes, in order for a given story to function (and keep in mind, by function I don’t mean just logistically, but also thematically) it is necessary that your protagonist has specific personality traits that will play out in significant ways in the story. Or that they come from a specific background that will be an important element to the narrative. Or that they go through a particular experience that will consist on crucial plot point. All those narrative tools and building blocks are considered to be completely harmless and neutral when telling stories about straight/white people but, when applied to marginalized characters, it can be difficult to navigate them as, depending on the type of story you might want to tell, you may be steering dangerously close to falling into Unfortunate Implications™. And trying to find alternatives as to avoid falling into potentially iffy subtext is not always easy, as, depending on how central the “problematic” element to your plot, it could alter the very foundation of the story you’re trying to tell beyond recognition. See the point above about Romeo & Juliet.
Like, I once saw a woman a gringa obviously accuse the movie Knives Out of racism because the one latina character in the otherwise consistently white and wealthy cast is the nurse, when everyone who watched the movie with their eyes and not their ass can see that the entire tension of the plot hinges upon not only the power imbalance between Martha and the Thrombeys, but also on her isolation as the one latina immigrant navigating a world of white rich people. I’ve seen people paint Rosa Diaz as an example of the Hothead Latina stereotype, when Rosa was originally written as a white woman (named Megan) and only turned latina later when Stephanie Beatriz was cast – and it’s not like they could write out Rosa’s anger issues to avoid bad optics when it is such a defining trait of her character. I’ve seen people say Mulholland Drive is a lesbophobic movie when its story couldn’t even exist in first place if the fatally toxic lesbian relationship that moves the plot was healthy, or if it was straight.
That’s not to say we can’t ever question the larger patterns in stories about certain demographics, or not draw lines between artistic liberty and social responsibility, and much less that I know where such lines should be drawn. I made this post precisely to raise a discussion, not to silence people. But one thing I think it’s important to keep in mind in such discussions is that stereotypes, after all, are all about oversimplification. It is more productive, I believe, to evaluate the quality of the representation in any given piece of fiction by looking first into how much its minority characters are a) deep, complex, well-rounded, b) treated with care by the narrative, with plenty of focus and insight into their inner life, and c) a character in their own right that can carry their own storyline and doesn’t just exist to prop up other character’s stories. And only then, yes, look into their particular characterization, but without ever overlooking aspects such as the context and how nuanced such characterization is handled. Much like we’ve moved on from the simplistic mindset that a good female character is necessarily one that punches good otherwise she’s useless, I really do believe that it is time for us to move on from the the idea that there’s a one-size-fits-all model of good representation and start looking into the core of representation issues (meaning: how painfully flat it is, not to mention scarce) rather than the window dressing.
I know I am starting to sound like a broken record here, but it feels that being a latina author writing about latine characters is a losing game, when there’s extra pressure on minority authors to avoid ~problematic~ optics in their work on the basis of the “you should know better” argument. And this “lower common denominator” approach to representation, that bars people from exploring otherwise interesting and meaningful concepts in stories because the most narrow minded people in the audience will get their biases confirmed, in many ways, sounds like a new form of respectability politics. Why, if it was gringos that created and imposed those stereotypes onto my ethnicity, why it should be my responsibility as a latina creator to dispel such stereotypes by curbing my artistic expression? Instead of asking of them to take responsibility for the lenses and biases they bring onto the text? Why is it too much to ask from people to wrap their minds about the ridiculously basic concept that no story they consume about a marginalized person should be taken as a blanket representation of their entire community?
It’s ridiculous. Gringos at some point came up with the idea that latinos are all naturally inclined to crime, so now I, a latina who loves heist movies, can’t write a latino character who’s a cool car thief. Gentiles created antisemitic propaganda claiming that the jews are all blood drinking monsters, so now jewish authors who love vampires can’t write jewish vampires. Straights made up the idea that lesbian relationships tend to be unhealthy, so now sapphics who are into Brontë-ish gothic romance don’t get to read this type of story with lesbian protagonists. I want to scream.
And at the end of the day it all boils down to how people see marginalized characters as Representation™ first and narrative tools created to tell good stories later, if at all. White/straight characters get to be evaluated on how entertaining and tridimensional they are, whereas minority characters get to be evaluated on how well they’d fit into an after school special. Fuck this shit.
"we need more canon representation of genuine, vulnerable male/male friendships that aren't romantic (i.e. gay) otherwise society is going to stop believing in the power of platonic male friendship"
may I present to you: the entire Lord of the Rings Trilogy AND the Hobbit any sports anime (Kuroko, Haikyu!!). any shounen anime (Naruto, Hunter x Hunter) Avatar the Last Airbender Sherlock Holmes in practically all iterations including House Stark Trek Star Wars Stargate Stranger Things Scrubs perhaps any t.v. show beginning with the letter S Community Friends HIMYM Big Bang Theory most sitcoms at this point I guess 9-1-1 B99 any cop show basically basically 90% of television Many YA books. Any classical novel from before women were considered people. I ALMOST FORGOT 90% of all MCEU & DCEU. Please remember that non-canonical gay relationships that are popular in fan spaces are NOT in fact the mainstream interpretation of that media, which still emphasizes the glory of male friendships, fraternity, comradery, bros before hos and that a small group on the internet that writes gay fanfic or draws gay art is not influencing millions upon millions of people that some people seem to be under the assumption it is. also, do not do homophobes jobs for you by reiterating this moral-panic argument about the loss of male friendships and think you need to apologize for liking non-canonical gay ships. you aren't "ruining" the relationship or taking anything away from straight men, I promise you.
Long council meetings.
Chapters: 2/3 Fandom: Dead Boy Detectives (TV) Rating: Mature Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Edwin Paine | Edwin Payne/Charles Rowland Characters: Edwin Paine | Edwin Payne, Charles Rowland (DCU), Crystal Palace (DCU) Additional Tags: Canon Universe meets Alternate Universe, Jealous Charles Rowland (DCU), except he's jealous of himself, Catholic Guilt, Mutual Pining, technically this a Charles/Edwin/Charles situation, with a slight bit of Charles/Edwin/Edwin/Charles at the end Summary:
In their attempts to rescue Niko from the Astral Plane, Edwin, Charles, and Crystal accidentally summon a second Charles Rowland from another universe.
Charles never gave much thought to whether he'd get along with an alternate universe version of himself. Technically, he should, this Charles was just like him: funny, clever, kind - a dead boy detective.
Except, this second version of Charles doesn't seem to know how to keep his bloody hands to himself, and off of Edwin.
might post what I currently have of the second chapter of don't go sharing your devotion (lay all your love on me) which is about 10 thousand words, and then just raise the chapter count to 3 for the final act b/c I have already been so late with everything (apologies, I started my Masters right after I began posting)
not to sound like a grandparent but just to clarify for my own sanity 'crackship' does not mean any non-canonical ship Crackships = nonsensical ships that have no basis in the canonical text and a relationship between the characters is farfetched to the point of absurdity. Jayce/Viktor (for example) is not a crackship just b/c it's not canon since the basis for their relationship is rooted in canon and it has some semblance of narrative coherency - even casual viewers can watch Arcane and think to themselves Jayce/Viktor makes sense. Jayce/Babette would be a crackship. I would argue that Viktor/Silco is a crackship. Calling Jayce/Viktor a crackship or saying you ship Jayce/Viktor even though it's a crackship misunderstands what a crackship is and I don't know if people are doing that b/c they are confused about what a crackship is or because they want to devalue ships they don't like by referring to them as a crackship, either way, hopefully this is helpful.
Hi! In a recent post where you showed a bit of your own cameo from George and Jayden, you mentioned: “Jayden and George also expressed that Charles & Edwin we're already basically a married couple, but that a wedding would let them be, in Jayden's words ‘proper married.’” Would you mind sharing a clip of this part? If not that’s ok!! Thank you for already sharing what you do have!
Sure!! I'll do my best to clip it in the next few days, trying to edit around Jayden & George saying my government name haha. Unlike some other people far cleverer than I, I didn't think to use my username, and just straight up told them my real legal name.
did anyone think to ask how Charles would confess his love to Edwin?? I'm now realizing that would have been the perfect (second) question to ask and I've missed the opportunity haha
Charles & Edwin's Marriage Vows
So, I wasn't originally going to share my Cameo b/c most of it reveals personal information about myself - however, I saw some people express disappointment b/c they felt the Cameo's weren't "Payneland" enough (gotta ask the right questions, my friends)! [Also, I disagree, plenty of the Cameo's brought me great Payneland joy: calling them soulmates, that they would always choose each other to share an afterlife with, that Charles would bring Edwin on an absolutely disastrous first date, and of course that Charles will hate the Cat King forever LMFAO]. Anyway, I used my - not great - technological skills to clip my Cameo to share one little moment: how Charles & Edwin would end their wedding vows in a special way :) - Jayden and George also expressed that Charles & Edwin are already basically a married couple, but that a wedding would let them be, in Jayden's words "proper married." Hopefully this brings some of you joy!
2 ,3, 5, 7 for the dbda ask game
Another person wanting to play along!! I am absolutely delighted, thanks so much. 2. My favourite episode is of course Episode 7 "The Case of the Very Long Stairway" which has some of my most beloved moments: Edwin & Charles meeting for the first time (which has resulted in one my favourite popular headcanons: Charles enjoys Edwin reading to him aloud), Charles' initial reaction to his death, the Night Nurse showing some actual heartfelt emotions, and of course Edwin's confession + Charles' wonderful speech in response. The scene between Edwin & Simon is also quite lovely. 3. A character that I think is underrated is Kashi! I absolutely loved Kashi, as well as the Kashi/Night Nurse dynamic. I would have loved to see more of him and his relationship with the Night Nurse in Season 2 (if Netflix hadn't decided to be such cunts about things). 5. Which character do I relate to the most - I'm horribly basic, so this is another toss-up between Charles & Edwin. My fiancé says Edwin, which makes sense: Catholic high-school, our own personal libraries and love for languages, we're both terribly stubborn and not that great with people. However, I also resonate with Charles quite a bit! I too would rather make a joke about anything than be forced to suffer through an awkward emotional conversation, and would love to hit my problems with a bat.
7. My favourite headcanon from the fandom so far - I did mention a bit of that above, which is the fact that I love the idea of Edwin reading to Charles aloud on a regular basis, as well as dyslexic!Charles headcanons.
For the Dead Boy Detectives Ask Game:
1, 4, 6, 8, 19 please✨
(also just wanted to say that I adore your fic enormously but there’s actually no pressure on you, readers will wait for you as long as it takes! you are wonderful author and we appreciate your work so so much!)
Thank you so much for playing along!! And for being interested in my fics, I'm hoping (as always haha) to update soon ^_^. 1. It's hard to choose between our boys (Charles & Edwin) but if I have to, I'll be choosing Charles! Which I guess makes sense - majority of my fic is actually from Charles' perspective. 4. Confirmed Payneland! I was really talking myself into the idea that Dead Boy Detectives was going for a slow burn Edwin/Charles endgame! I'd also like to see some actual interaction with Charles' parents (potentially Charles reacting to one if not both their deaths + his murderers, who as we know, are still alive). Also since they mentioned taking Niko's body to Japan, I thought maybe they'd go to Japan for some reason (perhaps that was just me being nostalgic since I've personally lived in Japan for a period of time, so I'd love for the cast & characters to get a chance to explore Japan haha). 6. I absolutely adore the characterization of RoseGanymede95's pre-canon Charles&Edwin series Who? You Mean Your Teammate in the Co-Dependency World Cup? I also love the strawberry sunscreen (something just like this) series by Igni which currently includes to be alone, to be in love, to just be worth it & spinning around and around in an ocean of grief (your ladder came down to the sea) which is my favourite AU of both Charles & Edwin being born in the same era, alive, and meeting at St. Hilarion's. 8. Oh a Headcanon I have that's not often talked about... hmm, this is a bit of a tricky one. Alright, after thinking for far too long, I'm going to say this: I don't think Edwin's all that keen on immediately losing his virginity or feels ashamed about being a virgin?? I think our boy is a romantic at heart, and is more interested in being in love with a boy (Charles) and having a loving relationship (preferably with Charles) than immediately hopping into bed with someone. And when Edwin (and Charles) officially end up together, I think they'd take their relationship slow and sweet! Which is why I don't really vibe with friends-with-benefits Payneland, or slut!era Edwin very much! 19. Since I answered for Charles as my favourite character, I'll go with George Rexstrew as my favourite actor (of course, Jayden is wonder as well) however, George did sent me a lovely Cameo about my engagement back when he was on Cameo, haha. ^_^ Thanks so much again for playing along.
I found your fics a day after I finished dead boy detectives for the first time and OH MY GOD I AM SO HOOKED I mean it, I read the published chapters over and over and over again and can never get enough of it, I absolutely love your style of writing and the story is just so addicting!!! Definitely don't mean to cause you pressure or anything, but I'm really excited about what you have in store!!!!
Thank you so much!! I'm glad to see some love for La Petite Mort alongside don't go sharing your devotions (lay all your love on me). I know I keep saying this, but I do hope to update soon and I'm pleased to know I'll still have some readers by then haha. Thank you so much again - I'm really glad you like my style of writing alongside the content, I know I can be a bit wordy - I'm trying not to become too purple prose about everything ^_^
I haven't seen any floating around, so I thought:
