fun fact: debates about if being transgender is a choice or not are irrelevant, because the fundamental truth is of bodily autonomy - a right that should never be seen as conditional or requiring a suitable, immutable condition.

people who are trans deserve the right to transition, not because it’s a medical treatment or because dysphoria can be classified as a mental illness but because we’re human beings who should be allowed to do whatever the fuck we want to our own bodies! this is a basic human right!

The chancellor of Bishops U, introduced Laura, as the spouse of Poulin, and also acknowledge Poulin’s mom and dad. Then he said stand up. Laura did not stand up right away because she thought it was only Poulin’s parents who were invited to. Then the chancellor said Laura you too, stand up and kept saying it until she did.

I’m smiling because the way Laura is trying to stay the most invisible is exactly how they were to each other when we all did not know they were a couple. It is both sad and sweet.

Sad because queer people often hide the person who supports them the most in their day to day life, and this reminded me of that. Sweet because you see a wife trying to stay as small as possible so that the day is about her wife.

Side note: Laura Stacey’s has been called : Poulin’s partner, Poulin’s spouse, Poulin’s teammate, Poulin’s life partner…😅😅😅

Reminder 1:

You can both love the PWHL and criticize it as well. The two aren’t mutually exclusive. The same goes for teams. Just because it’s your team doesn’t mean you blindly support them. It’s important to call out things about the league or your team. That’s the only way for growth and change to happen.

Reminder 2:

Just because a team has a player with bigoted beliefs does not mean that other players or fans share those beliefs. Don’t villainize and ostracize an entire fanbase just because of a decision that they had no control over. Don’t erase the LGBTQ+ fans of Detroit by labeling any fan as a bigot.

Curl is a symptom of bigger issues within hockey culture. Change needs to happen higher up in the league. There’s a reason that she feels comfortable being loud about her beliefs and partnering with a TERF organization. This does not excuse her actions or make her any less of a bigot. It is just important to also recognize the bigger issue.

(Hopefully this ramble made any sort of sense, I just finished a closing shift at work and am exhausted but wanted to share my thoughts while they were in my brain)
