Sooo the finale is... An experience! Without spoiling anything, I had predicted that everyone would be disappointed by the finale, including diehard fans of the show. I've talked to multiple people across the spectrum of absolutely loving it to absolutely despising it at this point.

If you were already a fan of what tadc was doing, and especially if you're a Jax fan, you should have a good time! Maybe even a great one! And I'm, like, genuinely happy and relieved for you guys that that seems to be the consensus. You fans are free to keep scrolling, have fun! 👋😊

... However, if you're like me and were expecting all the constant mystery and theory baiting for a story supposedly inspired by one of the most famous science fiction stories of all time to at least attempt to culminate in something, seriously don't hold your breath.

And if you're really like me and had sniffed out the seeds of mysoginy baked into how the femme cast is written (even outside of Jax's own intentionally written mysoginy), this finale will likely be even worse than anything you could have ever predicted. Let's just say that flashing images aren't the only warning they should have given.

Seriously WHY did we only learn about Bubble literally orchestrating Caine's death through blink-and-you'll miss it flashes of a screen and get the implication that he was a virus through a tumblr ask 💀

As it stands, the death of the main antagonist is comparable to if, at the end of Beauty and the Beast when Gaston fights the Beast, you had to pause the movie and look at the inbetween frames to notice LeFou's foot tripping Gaston as he falls. And then Beast goes to Belle like "... I think I accidentally killed Gaston."

My longpost about Noelle and Berdly's friendship has only 2 comments that arent my replies so far, not about Noelle or the dynamic or about Berdly's autism at all, but "defending Kerdly" 🥀

Like, you guys are totally free to quietly ship your faves while also acknowledging that pulling pranks is usually a bad thing (as we saw with Noelle often being scared and needing to be defended by Dess) but also can we please talk about something that everyone else isn't already talking about 💀💀💀

Noelle is probably Berdly's most important person in his life but some of y'all act as if he doesn't care about her and he only sees her as a way of being less lonely and getting good grades

Noelle is absolutely, 100%, unequivocably the most important person in Berdly's life. Even though it's heavily implied that he's desperate for parental approval, his big plan in Chapter 2 was leaving Homeworld and everyone behind forever to live with Noelle in a Smartopia where they would always be validated. If he only wanted to be #1 and be less lonely, he could have dreamt up the Smartopia to just revolve around himself.

And hell, not enough people think about how uncomfortable it would be to pretend to have romantic affection for someone you have 0 romantic affection for. He put himself through that because he genuinely believed that was how Noelle saw him, and he didn't want to let her down or discourage her from staying in his life.

I also personally believe that, because Berdly has a tendency to sense when Noelle is deeply troubled without knowing the specifics of why, the plan to live elsewhere was just as much for Noelle as it was for himself. Like he clearly doesn't know about Dess or Rudy (bc Noelle struggles to tell anyone about her problems and true feelings), but he'd surely be able to sense how deeply Noelle is affected and interpret that as a desire to escape her home life, given how much else he projects onto her

Still thinking about how in the episode of steven universe they revealed garnet is a fusion and a lesbian couple they had estelle sing what might be the best song in the entirr series about hows shes made out of love and it makes her able to defeat wannabe dbz villain jasper and it was all really cool and cinematic then like someone made a shitty undertale parody of the song and for the longest time that somehow became regarded as epitomal version of the song anyone remember that what the hell was up with that

Unfortunately what happened there is that Steven Universe was always shaky in quality and then quickly fell off after Peridot got redeemed so most people who felt disappointed by the culmination of years of investment wanted to forget about it (me), while Undertale, as a single 7-hour experience, will always be remembered as a really good piece of media and continue to influence people for as long as it stays relevant.

Even Garnet herself became much less interesting after the high point of that song as all of her screentime became dedicated to her expositing about fusion and relationships, and Rubipphire was revealed to have been a "love at first dramatic save" situation instead of the slow build requiring time and work that Garnet implied it was in S1.

Not saying that there isn't a huge overreaching problem in fandom of everyone giving all their love to A Guy With Angst™ while female characters and especially queer female characters are largely dismissed (esp bc Undyne and Alphys are right there and Alphys is arguably just as deeply tied to all the lore as Sans is) but yeah, I choose not to be cynical in this specific instance.

An addendum because I can and I don't think I properly articulated myself: I like that we understand in the first movie that Iago is abused by Jafar, both physically and with humiliation ("His majesty certainly has a way with dumb animals.") And we see in the first movie as well that Iago is clever and resourceful.

So when Iago says, "Who comes up with all the good ideas? ME! Who does all the work?! ME!" It's not random filler that came from nowhere to artificially facilitate this breakup scene and make Iago look retroactively better. Which makes sense, because I once read that Iago was Tad Stones' favorite character from the first movie, and The Return of Jafar was his means of saving Iago from banishment in the first movie and making him a part of the main cast for the TV series. Of course he would understand this character deeply enough to understand his strengths, and then see the potential of those strengths in a main cast role realized. I think Iago and Jafar would still be trapped in the Cave of Wonders if any other writer was approached to make the Aladdin TV series.

I've heard it said for years now that Anastasia from Cinderella has the best redemption arc, but the writers have to make up a dynamic in the 3rd movie where Tremaine is implied to be abusive to her bio daughters if they didn't fall completely in line with her in order to make Anastasia's redemption work. Because in the first movie, she takes complete glee in tormenting someone she sees as beneath her and is perhaps jealous of. It's like two completely different characters fill her role between the first movie and it's sequels. And one of the reasons I love Return of Jafar so much is that Iago feels completely, authentically, seamlessly himself for the entire runtime, and his redemption still makes complete sense. All the writers had to do was give Iago's pre-existing qualities more focus, and frame the abuse that was always there in a different light besides 'haha slapstick' to make us go, "Ohhhhhh."
