Oppression and genocide are two different things.
Genocide isn’t oppression + XL, it is a specific crime under international law.
A crime that can’t be committed based on gender, gender identity, sexuality, or sex. This is why things like female infanticide and sex selective abortion isn’t considered genocidal. Even though if falls under the goal of a genocide (destruction of the group in full or in part.) And two of the five categories of acts used in a genocide; the former being killing members of the group, the latter being limiting births within the group.
Throwing around the term genocide when that specific crime isn’t being committed doesn’t help anyone. It doesn’t help people being oppressed. And it doesn’t help people actually undergoing genocide.
I know lefty political streamers love to clickbait with the term genocide. But we all know they don’t read.
I came across your post at random.
And even though this isn’t my circus nor my monkeys. I happen to have an interest in circuses and monkeys. And felt the need to clarify this common misconception.
PS: Not shocked you, nor anon, or anyone in the comments know what the crime of genocide is. It’s not common knowledge.
uhhhhh thanks for the clarification, I suppose? but I wasn't trying to make a legal argument or claim to be an expert on international laws? my post was mainly about expressing support for trans people and concern over what I saw and understood to be escalating attacks against them. and when I used the phrase "the beginning phase of a starting genocide," I wasn’t talking about how a legitimate court has officially declared that there is genocide going on??? and if you disagree with whether “genocide” is the right word to use in international law, that’s a fair opinion. but I don’t think it was necessary to assume that myself, anon, and everyone in the comments didn't know what the crime of genocide is.
side note (read this please please), I pulled this out of the comment sections in one of the creators I linked in my original post! just so I can clarify what they meant and what I inferred! I did not originally see the comment they made. so I literally took what they and the second creator said at face value, and used the term how they were using it. not in a legally objective way. granted, I probably should have done more research on it! but the core motive for that post was expressing concern. and wanting other people to know that certain things are happening and taking place. but I was basically engaging with the broader framework being discussed. not filing a case at the international criminal court. I was discussing a political/social claim and expressing concern. NOT PRESENTING A LEGAL RULING :
getting back on track here: the difference between clarifying an issue and being condescending is not difficult to understand. insulting my intelligence by implying that none of us know what were talking about wasn't really needed, when we simply used a word in a social setting instead of using it in a courtroom setting. while claiming it ‘isn’t your circus,’ you certainly did a lot to take on the role of the ringmaster! you can teach people about international law without being incredibly condescending about it. saying that you aren't surprised that everyone who commented with me ‘doesn’t know the crime of genocide’ and that streamers don't read....isn't helpful at all??? and it clouds the tone of your core message and clarification.
the only “circus” here is that you saw a transphobe spewing garbage at me, and you thought it was ME who needed to be lectured and talked down to. you can teach us all about international law without being patronizing. being so smug as to assume that no one here is “correctly informed” because we used the word in a social and human sense, rather than in a court room context, is ridiculous. I am still going to speak up for my community and humiliate bigots. and if it is a “circus” to call out an anon for being transphobic, having fun with it, and telling people to laugh at them....then tickets are free. and everyone can come in and enjoy the show at this point. forgive me for laughing at a transphobic anon???? and having fun???
clarifying international law was fine. have no problem with that. but what WASN’T fine, was speaking down to all of us like we were stupid. and assuming my intentions, instead of just asking me what they were. I would have had no problem with you commenting on a post of mine, asking me to open my messages so we could have discussed this in private! where you could've gotten a clear response on what I actually meant. and I actually really liked your blog. and I thought you were pretty cool. I saw your comments on shiftblrtea and I remember probably liking some of them because you seemed like a fair person. so this response from you was actually pretty disappointing to see.
anyways, angel out! gonna return to my circus camper, ride around the south coast, and make bigots walk tight ropes and encourage the audience to throw pies at them. maybe I'll restock the face paint! who knows! cotton candy stands are still full by the way. we have a sales quota to meet, everyone. so if you could, please grab some on your way out.
