Realised I hadn’t posted my Mercymorn cosplay on here yet!

She’s one of my favourite Locked Tomb characters that I only fully came to appreciate on my second read through - I would be much less sane than she was if I was the only woman left from a 10,000 year old science project gone wrong gone religious

There is something so profound about how necro cav relationships are meant to make the necromancer stronger and lead to the cavalier's inevitable demise upon reaching lyctorhood, but every lyctor we ever meet regards the loss of their cavaliers with maddened despair and it inevitably leads to every betrayal against god. The thorn in the side of John's empire is that he can't take loved away and all of his creatures will turn on him for making them try.

Ianthe is the only exception but only because she never truly had a cavalier. She has a sister and she will rather starve herself into an undying death until the sun burn out than eat her sister. The greatest necromancer from the house of gold and greed refuses to do that.

I am not even going to try unravelling the Sixth, that's THE can of worms to ever worm of cans. They saw the stages of grief and said "no, we're going heresy any lysis instead".

I want you guys to know, the word "fuck" appears in various forms across Harrow the Ninth 83 times, and across Nona the Ninth 151 times. (I also checked As Yet Unsent but there aren't any there there.)

Across all of that, M—/Mercy says it exactly twice. Once in a dubious by nature quote from John (not that I think he'd have any reason to lie there, but it could be paraphrasing/misremembering), with M— saying a few days before the escape ships launched:

John, there is no second wave. There is no third. They’re escaping. The trillionaires have converted everything to material resources. Half these passenger manifests are made up, these aren’t real people. They’ve fucked everyone, even the governments.

And then freaking out upon meeting Gideon in Harrow's body, one of the things she calls her is "you great big calf-eyed fuck-up!" (Also, fascinating choice of cow association there tbh??)

On the other hand, an incomplete list of other things Mercy has said:

A very few mild swears, and of course sometimes her insults are just like "idiot" and "infant", but there are so many that are so silly. If anyone can think of more, either creative insults or other silly or overly cute or overly polite stuff of any kind, please give them to me. I am collecting them. I must have them all. I love her so, SO much.

mercymorns ability to commit to the bit is extraordinary. like imagine ur stuck on a ship w an ipad baby you’ve been trying to kill for millennia but you still find the time to dedicate energy to removing a few years off ur coworkers age every time u say it. and because of this you choose to say it Often until u get them to “infant”.

I genuinely think Mouthwashing fandom is a good example on how real life misogyny is very wired on people brains and influenced how they engage with fictional misogyny.

You have a story about a woman being assaulted and telling a man she trusted but being dismissed because he is friends with the attacker, and people fixate on shipping her with either of those men.

You have a story about how men that downplay their male friends violence, assume neutrality is the safer option, unintentionally help create an environment that's unsafe to vulnerable people, at a risk becoming a victim themselves. And people make it about toxic yaoi.

You have a character kill herself because she didn't want birth the child of her abuser. And people make AUs where she happily keep the baby.

Misogyny isn't just "I hate women", it's also downplaying their trauma, defending those who caused it, and reducing them to mothers or wives against their wishes under this idea of what womanhood is about.

I don't think we can separate fandom misogyny from it's real world influence, not yet.

I will never get over Fang Runin who didn’t have the privilege of having a heart. She destroys her uterus and any chance of having a family and writes to no one in her hometown because she can’t afford to be distracted from her studies the way that her classmates can. The people around her open up about their past and their feelings and she can’t comfort them, she can only tell them to be stronger because that’s all anyone ever told her. She falls in love with someone who betrays her because his whole life’s purpose is creating a future that she can’t exist in. She actively refuses to see her enemies as people because she couldn’t live with the choices she made if she stopped to think. She couldn’t even hang onto the love she had for her best friend, the one person she loved more than anyone and swore to always protect, because she is so consumed by rage and grief and despair that in the end, she kills both him and herself.

The tragedy of Fang Runin is that she was never allowed to have a heart so she stopped considering having one to be a possibility. Everyone around her told her that her life is not her own and no one gave her a chance to be anything but a peasant or a soldier. Peasants and soldiers don’t have the privilege of love and safety and comfort. Rin’s birthright is anger and violence. And that is what kills her.
