it's a perfect show in my eyes. i wish i could watch it for the first time again. PPGZ was a childhood favorite and i really enjoy Ojamajo Doremi!

I keep thinking about that time a white man came up to me (I am white), and asked me if I was an immigrant because of my accent /appearance. And the time a nurse asked me if I was a foreigner.

I was called ethnic the other day. They’re all so “well-meaning” when white people say those kinds of things but it does feel like a reminder that I’m not White American enough if I have any sort of visible culture.

This is so much worse for marginalized identities and communities. To me, it’s more frustrating than anything. There’s a certain level of appropriate ethnic-ness for white Americans but when you tow that line even just with your accent, people do view you as less American.

I could try and blend in with “White American” culture (if that exists…), but I don’t want to. I also inherited all of the shitty things that come with being white in America. When white Americans see culture, they do feel threatened and they do other you even when its a culture they’re usually neutral to because seeing a white person with culture makes white ppl realize that they’re also foreigners. Which is why I get asked if I’m an immigrant and I get called ethnic. They don’t want to see themselves as strangers on indigenous land.

teenagers aren’t the vanguards of the pro-censorship movement. the closest thing that happens to this is that bad actors who are adults exploit teenagers’ age-appropriate discomfort with violent and sexual art to incite internet stochastic terrorism campaigns. but even this happens far less often than adults just silencing children and pretending to be speaking for them by proxy.

i hate the misuse of the term “puritanism” in this context but the idea of teens (“puriteens”) being the principle driving demographic behind this cultural trend is genuinely pretty fucking insulting, considering adults who use kids and teens as a cudgel (“think of the children!”) are actually the people driving movements toward censorship.

Culture around feet is so weird because I feel better without shoes on, plastic mass-produced dog-containers aren't made for most people. People are so weird about just walking in grass or dirt without shoes on, or even at home without socks. Did you guys ever hear of washing your feet. Like taking soap and washing dirt off them instead of having to deal with mud on ur stupid shoes that hate being cleaned.

The feet-shaming is so damn weird because if somebody has a weird kink about feet that's their problem. People sexualize me no matter what I do, if I wanna go barefoot in a meadow knowing all of the risks like stepping on bees or whatever then I will. I don't listen to the gross man in my ear telling me that it's weird because feet are sexualized. We need to get more normal about bodies right now.

Yuuuup! You worded this perfectly. And I think this is a concept people are struggling with when others critique Gooseworx's tweets.

Sure, one could look at those "jokes" and think, "Ahhh, good ol' Goose! She's just being her usual, sarcastic self. Pay no mind to the public tweets about hating women and how much her self-insert loves harming that group of people," but does she follow through on these sentiments outside of quippy social media posts?

Well...

She fridges women in her series. Writes them to coddle an abusive male character. Attempts to make an audience sympathize with said abusive male character over these tortured women. Makes misogyny a silly running gag. Makes sexual harassment against women into a joke. Etcetera etcetera.

There are really no plausible barriers stopping us from connecting Goose's inner thoughts to how she expresses them.

The only barrier is the hoard of people acting purposefully obtuse. Acting like they have the guts to make these types of jokes knowing good and damn well they’d get eaten alive if they did.

They’re too cowardly to make these jokes publicly, so they rally behind people like Gooseworx and defend the humor incessantly because they want it to be okay soooo bad. They want to not give a fuck sooooo bad.

This type of humor never crosses my mind, and to give in and make the joke public SEVERAL times ?? Ugh.

Some people don’t know they’re about to be punched until they’re on the ground.

oh, and here are my thoughts on Gangle as a desi person myself.

first off, let's get this straight. Gangle is desi. i've seen people calling her black, probably due to her profile pic, but her last name is Raghavan. that's a desi name. (she could be mixed too maybe but dark-skinned indians absolutely exist)

now that that's cleared.. wow, the only desi character in this show is a woman who is constantly bullied, abused, humiliated and belittled by a white man (or woman, if you believe the trans theory but if Gooseworx is too chicken to confirm he's trans, that's not my fault).

asian women being weak and submissive is already a problematic trope. india is unfortunately still a very conservative and misogynistic country where abuse, domestic violence and SA is extremely normalized and condoned, so it's not very comforting to see an indian woman being subjected to all of that and not getting any justice or closure.

i don't really mind Gangle being an abuse victim if it was actually well-written. if it was actual social commentary instead of "haha look, this asian woman is getting tormented by this asshole, isn't that funny".

also as someone who's bipolar, Gangle being implied bipolar is also just written badly. her depression is never taken seriously by anyone except Zooble, her abuser is shown more sympathy and compassion than she is, and her arc goes nowhere.

and her presumed manic episode in the finale is also treated as a joke and implied to be exploited for SA. WOW this is deeply fucked up. sure, it's just Jax's fantasies but even that says something about the creators if they think they could just show a man fantasizing about sexually abusing someone in the middle of a manic episode, and then brush past it like it's nothing.

i have type 2 bipolar so thankfully i've never had a full-on manic episode, mine were more hypomanic. but i can't even imagine being in a situation like this where you have no control over your emotions and someone uses that to blackmail you into presumably sleeping with them.

but coming back to her ethnicity, i deeply believe that Gangle was never meant to be desi. it definitely seems like a last-minute decision to say "hey we're not racist, look! we have a poc character", especially considering that her VA is white.

Just watched Adam Conover (of Adam Ruins Everything) make such a solid point that I think we should spread far and wide. Yes, having AI write your emails is lazy, sure, but people love being lazy. We need to really emphasize that sending AI emails (or using AI responses on social media, or publishing AI flyers, or or or) is rude.

It's rude. You're making someone take their time to read something you couldn't bother to write. You're telling them they were so unimportant you couldn't be bothered to actually take the time to say something yourself. And frankly, you're lying about it while you're at it.

It's rude.

The above is doubly true if the content of the email is something that will be important to the person receiving - especially something that affects them negatively. They see that this thing that affected them so much didn't matter enough to you to write it yourself. I was a bystander to such a thing not long ago and it was just awful.
