Rant time

The state of ball python breeding still pisses me off Like. I would -love- to continue breeding them, genuinely. I adore them as a species so much and the genetics are absolutely wild. But I, in good conscience, can't myself add to the insane over production of these animals anymore. For reference, crested geckos are the second most bred reptile in the hobby, currently. Here is the comparison of both pages and amount of ads on morph market for ball pythons VS cresteds:

33 THOUSAND ball pythons vs 7.5 thousand cresteds. These are currently the top two bred reptiles, from what information can currently be gathered. And it sucks because a very large majority of the ball python breeders don't give a single shit about their animals, just about the new morphs they can make and the dollar signs on those morphs. But it leaves us who are actually passionate about the individual animals care, in a shitty spot, because we want to contribute in a good way but because we actually care about where our babies end up, opt not to breed anymore. It's awful and so, so frustrating. Anyways. There was no other point to this post other than to rant lmao.

As someone who lives an area with at least three decent-sized reptile rescues (and volunteers for one, and has adopted from two), about 95% of the snakes available for adoption are ball pythons.

I understand the appeal of beautiful morphs, with all of their pretty patterns and colors, but I always urge my reptile clients to adopt and shop responsibly (this goes for any species, to be honest). While many breeders have extensive love and knowledge of these animals, and I don’t think owners/buyers should be shamed for going to responsible and ethical breeders, there are plenty more out there that are just out for financial gain.

I ended up meeting the breeder of my first ball python out and about randomly a little over a year after I bought him and he asked for updated pictures of my boy. He was sincerely interested in his growth and development. He cared about the snakes he produced. Unfortunately, he’s not breeding any more for the exact reason stated above - the market is too saturated.

Side note: “Big Box” corporate pet stores are always a no-no. Just don’t do it. It can turn out really well sometimes (my very first snake was a Petco purchase, before I knew better, and he’s the the sweetest snake that I own), but that’s the exception rather than the rule.

My favorite part of owning reptiles and doing education: getting curious, but a tad reluctant, adults to take the plunge and hold one of the “big boys”. Adults tend to have a more deep-rooted fear than kids do, and are typically harder to convince. Love my boy Nanners for always being a good ambassador. ❤️

Nanners got to help out with Career Day today and was a perfect baby angel with all of the kids.

I get asked why his travel cage is so small and it’s because you want your reptiles snug when they’re in the car for transport. With too much extra space, any sudden stops or shifting while driving can cause them to slide around which, at best, stresses them out and, at worst, can cause injury from hitting the sides of a bigger enclosure in the case of an accident.

Being in a travel container that allows them to touch all sides keeps them nice and snug during the ride. Snakes are flexible, I promise they can handle being in a tight space for a few hours. He got to come out and stretch multiple times during the day and immediately went back into his normal cage when he got home.

I was really into the signs all over ReptileFest- they all sent home messages of responsibility and the actual challenges of owning different species. Very refreshing- you never see stuff like this at breeder shows (because they want everyone to buy things)!

Proud to say I know the owners of all these signs. The Reptileready one is a close friend who I’ve gotten many of my own snakes from.
