Two Years Past
Where I've been and the future of this page; ā”āā”āā”āā”āā”āā”āā”āā”āā”āā”āā”
Hello my loves,
It's really been awhile, 2 whole years since my last post! A lot has happened to me during that time. I won't go too much into detail, but honestly I fell into a huge depression. I stopped being able to do anything I enjoyed. It was a really rough time. I felt so disconnected from life, the universe, myself, and anyone around me. It was so hard to even want to keep going.
So, what changed?
Like I said, a lot happened in that time, a lot of moving and fast paced transitions. During the first year, I was so caught up in everything, I pushed my spiritual practices aside. I didn't have a safe space to practice.
Once I was finally in a safe space, I'd say at the beginning of last year, I rebuilt my altar. I began to read and research again. I pushed myself to go and visit nature. I pushed myself to celebrate the solstices and equinoxes. I started to notice all the little things in the world again, and actually began to work with a deity in a way I never have before. Loki entered my life, and turned everything green! Our connection helped me realize the universe is always listening. He taught me rituals to kill the old self and transform into the person I want to become. And so that is what I have been doing the past 6 months, and I've completely shape shifted. :)
The present and the future~
Now that my life has sort of stabilized, not only have I continued my practices, but my motivation to pursue my other hobbies has come back. I would like to post more here for sure, and share the knowledge I gain with you lovely creatures. š¼
Two years ago, I also had an online shop(kandygurlz) that I ran with my closest friend. She kinda uh, ghosted me š But! I'm not going to let her stop me from pursuing my goals.
Kandygurlz is currently being transitioned to TheHexedMuscaria, a shop that sells nostalgic trinkets, ritual candles(hand crafted uniquely by me), slow fashion, and more!
Here are some of my teacup candles >\\\<
Also here's a few examples of second hand fashion items I plan to sell!!!
[ soz I want to run this shop alongside my tumblr, which is why I'm plugging that here xD ]
Anywho~
I'm really grateful for those of you that stuck around!
I can't wait to see what the future has in store for this page and my shop, and I am glad to be back online :3
Thank you so much my loves, as usual if you have any questions feel free to use my AMA~š©·š

banishing (how to do it)
yeah this is like all UPG but it works good for me, take what you will and leave the rest behind.
if your response to this is "but most people never ever have to deal with unwanted spirit problems so you're probably wrong if you think it's a spirit! do shadow work and touch grass!" please let me invite you to just not interact with this post at all.
Don't cleanse. Like please don't, why do people do this??
"I am confident an unwanted spirit is in my home and I cleansed but nothing happened."
Okay, an unwanted guest is in your home and you did a bit of vacuuming and washing the dishes, so why are they still there??
Why WOULDN'T they be there?! It's nicer now??? It's better for them to stay?!?!?!
"I want to break up with my boyfriend so I did his laundry but he's still texting me :/"
Cleansing =/= banishing and cleansing should be saved for cleaning up after an unwanted spirit after they are banished, which again, is not accomplished by cleansing.
Stop raising wards that trap the spirit inside.
"I cleansed and put up a protection but that only made the problem worse!"
Yes you did a wash up and locked the spirit inside with you, of course it's pissed off. It's trapped.
If you feel the need for immediate protection when dealing with a spirit problem, craft an amulet that serves as a personal protection for you. NOT one that seals off the entrances to your home.
Once the spirit problem is taken care of and you are confident its presence has been removed, feel free to raise up those wards sky high.
Also, if you are heavy-handed with the warding, spirits can sometimes just get trapped inside regardless. Learn how to temporarily "switch off" wards when you need to so things can leave.
Put your fucking foot down and tell the spirit to leave.
This will solve a surprising number of unwanted spirit problems. Not all of them, and come on, please stop telling people they never need to learn actual banishing skills just because telling spirits to leave works most of the time.
But you gotta do it. And I mean you don't have to be an asshole about it. You don't have to jump right into screaming in the spirit's general direction and threatening all such harm on it.
And there's plenty of good reasons to start with this step, especially if you want to be a spirit worker, but that's neither here nor there. Just tell them to leave.
Go to an area where you think the spirit is, or go where its private and speak with the intent that the spirit will hear you.
(You may also sign or write; would generally not recommend doing this operation entirely mentally)
"Hey, Dude. I know you're here, and I want you to know that you must leave. It is no longer an option for you to stay. I request that you leave immediately, and I request that you do not come back to this place. Leave now and we part ways in peace."
Do not go belly up and beg the spirit. It benefits you to behave with authority and dignity.
DO NOT try to "soften the blow" by twisting your words into something that is no longer a demand that the spirit depart. "Hey, if it's okay with you, I'm hoping you'll leave soon, or as soon as you're able... I don't feel comfortable with you here, and I'd prefer if you went." Great, now the spirit knows how you feel. So what?
Banish the spirit (or human, or whatever).
Presumably we're at this step because the prior step ("bro, seriously just leave and never come back") did not work.
Obtain correspondences heavily associated with banishing, use them to enchant a candle, burn the candle.
Can't use a candle? Try a simmer pot.
No fire at all, including incense? Try a floor wash (test carpets to ensure there will not be staining).
Can't burn things or clean the house? Try a sigil you visualize being imprinted on all the walls of your home.
Can't visualize? Consecrate something to represent the spirit, drop it in a jar of water along with banishing correspondences, swirl it around like a whirlpool, chant about the spirit being washed away.
No waterproof containers? Consecrate something to represent the spirit, stand on the edge of your property, throw it off the edge of the property.
You get my drift -- do magic. Do magic. Do magic that banishes. Use magic specifically to banish. Not to cleanse the vibrations or whatever. Specifically magic intended to yeet a spirit.
At this point, do not try to ignore the problem or keep talking it out. Do not just try to meditate or whatever. Do magic. Do magic that banishes.
Here's a banishing spell if you need it:
Basil, cloves, red pepper
Candle (ideally, red)
Paper and ink
Small offering
Draw the planetary seal of mars and the planetary square on a piece of paper, ideally in red. Dress a candle in oil (*burning your house down is an effective way to banish a spirit but perhaps too heavy-handed; dress with care) and include either one or three dried, powdered herbal correspondences to it.
Dedicate the candle to Mars. ("Planet Mars, someone on the internet told me you'd help me if I asked - I'm asking now. I give this candle to you. It belongs to you now.")
Put the candle near the paper.
Evoke Mars. ("Planet Mars, where your symbol exists so you exist. Where your planetary square exists, so do you exist. The space has been made welcoming to you through the presence of these Martian correspondences.") The martian correspondences are the basil/cloves/peppers, btw ("I ask you to bring your attention now to me. I ask you to dwell fully in this space.")
Read the Orphic hymn to Ares if you'd like a little extra elbow grease behind your evocation.
Petition Mars. ("So please get rid of this spirit, it seriously sucks so bad.")
Offer payment. ("In exchange for this help I know you will provide, I give you this candle and also this [small offering].")
Seal the deal. No, you do not need to be able to receive psychic confirmation from a planet or whatever, but do not proceed if you feel any gut-level bad feelings or suddenly get a ton of anxiety. If that happens, be like, "Mars, buddy, never mind - I get a bad feeling about this, so I'm noping out. Thanks for listening while you did. Leave in peace."
But if you feel fine about moving ahead, just be like, "now I give you Mars this offering, and I light your candle, with full and total assuredness that this spirit will be permanently banished from my space, my life, and my home."
[Light the candle, give the offering]
Cleanse
The spirit should be gone before you put up wards
Residual ickyness can make you feel the spirit is still nearby even if its been banished
Cleanse your space and see if the symptoms of the spirit return.
If symptoms return, the spirit has not been banished.
If they don't return,
Put up wards.
Ya got haunted because ya didn't have a fence up to stop random cows from wandering into the garden of your life and trampling all your hard work. Put up the wards.
Oh, but maybe the banishment didn't work, in which case:
Mitigate symptoms.
I mean yeah, maybe try at least a few more types of magical banishing, call in a priest even. But!
Not every spirit can be banished. That's just the long and short of it.
As humans we have the capacity to intertwine our lives, intentionally or otherwise, with forces that cannot be immediately removed from our presence.
Like if the grand spirit of a forest hates all humans and you build a house in the forest, you're not going to be able to banish the forest from the forest, you feel me?
Sometimes, banishing isn't the solution.
As rare as it is, it happens. Make personal protections, use mirror or other illusory wards to hide from its attention, make reparations if possible, avoid attracting attention, and get on with your life.
Energy Work 101: Basic Shielding
"Shielding" is an energy work technique that puts a protective sphere of energy around you. This technique is basic at its core, but can be continually evolved and upgraded to become very advanced and powerful indeed.
Concepts & Theory
Most all shields are spherical or egg-shaped.
Shields are often sized to be an outstretched arm's length away from your body, plus a foot (30cm) or so extra all around. You can make them any size you like. Because they are made of energy, the bigger they are, the more energy they take.
Shields fade away. Depending on how stable they are when you make them, they may fade within hours or days.
Shields can and will affect your mood and how people perceive you.
It is a good idea to practice dismantling/undoing shields as often as you practice creating them.
While the most basic shield is a bubble of white light, they can be endlessly modified.
You can have more than one shield at once. They can be stacked concentrically. Think about which shields you want to be closer to you and which you want on the outside next to others.
One of the most useful ways to modify a shield is to specifically choose what kinds of energies you want to bet let in, and what kinds you want to keep out.
The basic technique used for energy shielding can also be used for other techniques such as glamours, energy cleansing, object charging, and some forms self-care. Because of this, shielding is a good place to start practicing practical energy work.
Shielding is a cousin of aura-imprinting. The technique I am talking about here puts a bubble of energy on the outside of your aura. Aura-imprinting/strengthening techniques refer to changing your aura itself.
Methods of Shield-Raising
There are as many methods to accomplish shielding as there are people. Here are a couple:
1. Make one hand into a fist and place it over your heart. Place your other palm on top of it. Gently push down on your chest to create pressure - not so much that it hurts. Imagine, feel, believe, or know that within your chest is a wellspring of energy. This energy pools around your fist as you create pressure there. When you are ready, move your fist away from your body (experiment with both fast and slow motions). Imagine, feel, believe, or know that an energy sphere grows from that place in your chest and expands until it surrounds you. It stops expanding about a foot away from your outstretched arms.
2. Breathe in. As you breathe in, consider that you are pulling pure energy out of the air and into your body. Hold your breath for a beat and decide that when you exhale, that pure energy is going to start forming a sphere around your body. As you exhale, imagine, feel, believe, intend, or know that this energy flows around you to start forming an energy shell. Continue breathing in and out with intent until you can easily imagine, feel, or believe that the shell has become solid and complete.
3. Consider a pop-culture method that a character uses to shield themselves. Steven Universe can do that rose quartz thing, for example. Or, imagine Captain Picard of Star Trek saying, "shields up!" and the Enterprise being surrounded by powerful protective energy. Copying a pop-culture technique can be extremely effective for shielding. Put your intent towards causing real power to flow, and let culture be your guide.
4. Consider that your body is permanently connected to your environment and there is always free energy exchange passing between you and the world around you. This process is automatic, but like your breath, you have the ability to take control of this process if you so choose. Feel the parts of you making contact with the world below (your feet, or bottoms of your legs if you are sitting). Decide, intend, choose, or will that the energy passing into your body at those points will instead rise up and surround you in a shield. You may need to actively stay with this process and continually will it to occur; with practice you may need to only check in every now and then.
A Method of Shield-Dissolving
1. Consider that you have placed energy around yourself which exists there whether or not you can feel it. Decide, intend, choose, or will that this energy breaks up and dissolves. You get to choose what to do with the energy. Options include:
Drawing it back into yourself
Pushing it down into the earth
Releasing it into the air around you
Would you like to do a fun experiment? Release the energy into the air around you in a closed room with no open doors or windows :)
Consider drawing energy back into yourself until you feel your storage containers are full, then pushing the rest of it downwards and into the earth.
Basic Shield Programming
For practice in raising and putting down energy, the form or shape your shield takes doesn't really matter. If you need to know what form it will take in order to complete the exercise, the most basic shield is considered to be a smooth bubble of white light; you can choose to practice with any form you like.
Programming a shield basically means to choose its effects. Common effects include limiting emotional intake from others, and blocking out environmental energy.
Form should follow function. If you want an energy shield to totally completely block out 100 of environmental energies, its form may take an opaque, solid black orb. If you want the shield to limit some energies but not others, it may take the form of a chain-link fence, be semi-opaque, or be like vines with gaps-inbetween them.
Experimenting with what forms work best for you is worthwhile. You do not necessarily need to choose a specific form: simply putting willpower behind your intent will also suffice.
Two Methods of Programming
I recommend trying the first technique for initially creating the shield, and the second technique for making adjustments once it exists.
1. Choose the intent of your shield before you even begin making it. As you begin gathering power, hold your intent in the forefront of your mind. Understand, believe, or know that the shield will not be created in general, but that it will be created within the specifications of your intent, like pancake batter poured into a cookie cutter mold. Hold your intent at the forefront of your mind while energy is gathered and released into the shield. (This is what you're doing automatically if you choose a pop culture technique with specific shield purpose and form)
2. Create a general/basic shield in any way you prefer. Observe, believe, feel, understand, or know that this basic shield is under your control and will respond to your intent. Select an intent. Pour your intent into the existing shield. This may be done through the vehicle of the breath, hand symbols, eye gazes, chanting, or any desired method. Observe, believe, feel, understand, or know that the shield responds to your will like a pond rippling when a rock is thrown in. Maintain your focus until you sense the work is complete, or until you're tired or bored.

Hi, sweetie, how are you? I see you work with Freyja. She is a goddess I would like to start working with but I don't know how to start, any advice? I would like leave a candle with her runes as an offering. But I don't know what kind of protection I should use to avoid calling other kinds of spirits or energy since I've never tried to work with gods or goddesses before and I'm scared to summon something other than her. Thank you if you take the time to reply š
Hello my love!! I'd love to give some advice on freyja!!ā”ā
Freyja
Freyja is one of the most approachable deities you could work with. Freyja taught the Aesir Seidr, and enjoyed teaching others about the art. She would love to work with you as well, but only if you are ready to recieve.
I believe one of the best ways to contact her is through trance, as that is how she herself did magick.
Offerings are a wonderful way to start building a relationship before you try to meet. I've discovered she really loves apples and chocolates. She also enjoys tangerines. But one of the biggest offerings that she really loves, is the act of s*x. Doing that stuff in her name. Ever since I formed a stronger relationship with her, s*x with my partner has been insanely amazing, which is a benefit I suppose to working with her lol.
You need to understand her, and what she is about. She is a warrior, a vƶlva, and a goddess of fertility. She is the goddess of the vanir, daughter of njƶrd, twin sister to freyr. She is the goddess of pain and pleasure. I recommend that you read about her before moving forward, and familiarize yourself with the elder futhark as she mostly communicates in runes. (At least for me)
Smaller acts to build the relationship
Fighting for what you believe in
Embracing your body
Doing what you want to do and not listening to haters
Taking care of yourself
Meditation
Trance
Learning seidr
Read the poetic and prose edda
Bath time
Wear amber
How I contacted her
After a building the relationship a bit and reading about her, I decided to try and reach out to her. I made a concoction of mugwort and lavender and drank it 30 min before entering a special bath. I burned incense and candles and myrrh and made a verbal ward. I turned off the lights and I lay in the water for about 30 min and meditated on my intention "show me how to begin" (in terms of learning seidr and worshiping her) and lots of runes were revealed to me in a specific order and afterwards when I wrote them out it gave me a message and I followed it. It may not be as straightforward for you, or it may be slightly different, but there are also guided meditations on YouTube that you could use.
As for protection:
Wards. Warding is your best bet as you can set your own conditions and keep randoms out and freyja in. Ward the space that you're going to do it. Ward your mind. Ward your body. Just make sure the conditions aren't too tight.
Let me know if you still have questions! My dms are also always open if you'd like to discuss things more privately ~āā”ā~

ā”āā”āā”āā”āā”āā”āā”āā”āā”āā”āā”āā”āā”āā”
When it comes to spellwork, energy work, manifestations, and just witchcraft in general,
Giving is a very important part of the process. In the universe, you cannot expect to receive something without giving back. When you plant a seed you give it time and care and In return it gives you harvest. You care for a cow and it gives you milk. Certain things require more work/care than others, different plants need more care than others, some cakes take more ingredients and money to make. It's the same with magick.
Giving Energy
Energy is one of the most common gives of a beginner and even advanced witch. Whether it be from crystals, moon/sun water, the self, or a kind plant (ie. burning a bay leaf), energy can be given quickly and with low effort, making it great for spells/manifestations/etc requiring less charge to work. Although, unless you want to leave your whole body thoroughly drained, it's not recommended to use energy alone for a bigger spell, or bigger ask.
āOther ways to giveā
Offerings šāØā”ā
You don't have to worship a deity to leave offerings! You can simply offer it up to the universe, mother nature, animals, or something that relates to the work you're doing. The item should have value to you, or have taken effort and work to create. A few examples would be:
Leave milk and honey on your altar or pour it into the soil
Leave bird seed/food for birds š¦
Throw native flower seeds In sparse areas for the bees š
If you garden, offer your first and last harvest
Lighting candles
Throw things into fire (herbs, grains, flowers)
Incense
Compost
Actions of service (healing rituals for earth, rituals for worship, etc.)
Designating a seed/baby plant for a specific spell and caring for it long term
Caring for yourself and stick to it, acknowledge and appreciate the gift that is your body
Sex
Bl**d from your monthly cycle
A note:
If doing work for deity, research some common offerings or things they enjoy, as they have rather specific tastes and not everything can be an offering for them. (You could accidentally offend them)
Sacrificeššš½āāļø
Okay before you freak out thinking we're gonna harm someone or something, realize that's not the only kind of sacrifice you can make. It means giving up something you absolutely cherish and really wouldn't casually let go.. It's definitely great for charging up powerful spells. A few forms of sacrifice are:
Donating your favorite clothes to a woman/mens shelter
Giving away prized positions
Selling important items, like beautiful crystals or jewelery
Giving away half your food to those who need it
Giving up technology or 1st world luxuries for a week or amount of time you choose
Giving up bad habits
Cutting off bad friends/sources of bad energy
Giving away extra of anything, only Keeping what you need
Giving up negative attitudes towards people
A few more (extreme) sacrifices that could be unhealthy to a certain extent and you should be cautious of:
Emotions such as happiness, anger, sadness, gratitude, etc.
Life Energy
State of health physical or mental
Life necessities
Time
Relationships
Responsibilities
Commitments
Things to beware of
Always always always make sure you know what you are offering or sacrificing, because sometimes you can give up something you didn't mean to give away...
Try to make sure you aren't giving up too much or too little, as it might have an impact in your craft. Try to weigh the value of what you wish the outcome to be, and offer something of the same value.

How to use rosesš®š§¾
Heres a rundown on a few ideas of use, from petal to leaf! You can dry your flower or use it fresh. (Hang it upside down to dry!)
Petals
Most commonly used when you think of rose magic, add them to spell jars, tea, bathes, poppets, or oils!
Leaf
I personally use the leaves the same as one would use a bay leaf, and it works wonders for manifestation! I got a job I really wanted by writing the location and title on a rose leaf and burning it.

There's lots of parts of the peony that can be safely used, such as roots and seeds, but most likely your bouquet didn't come with those so I'll leave them out. (Message me if you'd like information on those though!)
Petals
Add them you your bath, spell jars, tea, poppets, or even wear them around your neck in a baby jar! (Only consume short term and in small amounts. Do not consume if pregnant/trying for a baby!!)
Leaf
Burn the leaves for protection and manifestation, similar to the rose leaf!

šš„Nordic Holidaysš„š
Let me start off by clarifying that these are the Norse holidays I personally celebrate. I have it split up into major holidays(holidays I try not to miss aka major holidays) and minor holidays(Smaller celebrations, I might not even celebrate these, etc.). This information will vary from person to person, you can celebrate whichever holidays however you want! Enjoy ~Ā
āØMajorāØ
Jól
Jól otherwise known as Yule/Yuletide is a Nordic holiday celebrated between sundown on the Winterās Solstice for a following twelve days(now you know where the Christians got it). It is also duringĀ Jól that the Wild Hunt takes place, Ćưinn rides out with his dead, elves, or the dwarves may ride out across Midgard. Seeing the Hunt was thought to bring famine, plagues, and war but offerings of food and gifts could be left out for blessings and prosperity.Ā Jól was said to mark the return of Baldr from Helheim and the loosening of grip of winter of the Earth.
There numerous references to Jól in the sagas including SkÔldskaparmÔl, Heimskringla, and poetry written by the skald Eyvindr SkÔldaspilli which when translated reads:
āagain we have produced Yule-beingās feast [mead of poetry], our rulersā eulogy, like a bridge of masonryā. Most of these references testify to Jól being celebrated with blóts, feasting with family, drinking, gift giving, and dancing.
To be more specific, you can celebrate the twelve days of Jól by being hands on in your devotion! This was traditionally a time of year that was largely devoted to baking, finishing the mead making process, and hand making decorations and offerings to the heathen home and gods!! There was typically at least one julbord(feast) and an animal sacrafice.Ā
For example, straw animals in the shape of goats(Ćórr), stars, boars(Freyr), horses, and ravens(Ćưinn) were made and hung up around the house or a Jól tree! Yessss, that was something that German immigrants brought over to the U.S. The Jól tree was traditionally a tree outside that was decorated and offerings were left at in honor of Yggdrasil! You can also make wreaths, garlands, and woven rugs or wall hangings!Ā
The first night of Jól is typically called the Mothernight, this was in honor of the All Mother Frigg and the Disir. The first night(the longest night) is supposed to be symbolic to the rebirth of the world from winter. This is the perfect night to start on some weaving or crafts! Frigg is known for her weaving.
Disablót
Disablót was a sacrificial holiday(blót) in honor of the female deities, women, disir and valkyries. Itās purpose was to enhance the upcoming harvest and prepare the grounds for sowing.Ā
Ā It is mentioned in Hervarar saga, VĆga-GlĆŗms saga, Egils saga and the Heimskringla. ThisĀ celebration still lives on in the form of an annual fair called the Disting in Uppsala, Sweden(I really want to go to this). Thereās a lot of debate to when the holiday was originally celebrated because the sagas all are slightly different. However, it is currently celebrated at the end of February by Sweden!
It was around this holiday that the first furrows were plowed in the fields and that there was a feast of new beginnings.
Nordic folk customs would include getting ready for the gardening season, preparing for the gardening/farming season ahead, and making a feast for your loved ones and female deities you work with.
Sigrblót
Sigrblót also known as Summer Finding or Ostara is the celebration of the spring equinox and welcoming good weather. It is a celebration of the rejuvenation of the earth, fertility, and growth.
This is a holiday often used to celebrate the Germanic god Äostre, the embodiment of springtime and life, Iưunn, god of youth and renewal, and Frigg/Freyja, for their key elements in fertility magic. Is more commonly seen in modern days as a celebration of theĀ renewal/awakening of the Earth(Jƶrư), the deities, and life. It is also a celebration to welcome joy and light into oneās life.
Nordic folk custom would include a large bonfire, smorgasbord(as always), baking sweets, and honoring the gods mentioned above or ones important to you this holiday.
Midsummer
Midsummer is probably the second biggest celebration next to Jól. It is pretty much just the celebration of the summer solstice and can also be celebrated in hopes of a good harvest at the end of fall.Ā
This holiday is attested to in the Ynglinga sagas and has long been a passed down celebration. Folk custom for celebrating would be large bonfires, speeches, smorgasbord, dancing around a majstÄng(traditionally for fertility), lots of drinking, and galdr. This is another holiday with a lot of hands on folk tradition; wreath making, kindling fires, making toy viking ships of wood and filling them with offerings to be burned, burning corn figures, adorning homes, halls, and the fields with fresh flowers and greenery.
A lot of of historians believe this is a particularly good time of year to make blessings to Baldr. This was also the time of year for sailing and war. With crops planted at home, vikings would set off to go to other lands.Ā
Freyrfeast
My favorite holiday!! There is no actual surviving name for this beast but itās believed to be held around the star of August and most modern Norse pagans celebrate it on August 1st. TheĀ ĆlĆ”fs saga Tryggvasonar en mesta has an account of a priestess of Freyr traveling across Sweden at the start of winter with a picture of his god as a sacrifice for fertility and to honor him. Traditionally itās a celebration of the first harvest where the primary god honored is Freyr with Sif and Ćórr also celebrated as gods of harvest.
Traditionally the very first sheaf of grain harvested(I use my first bundle of lavender) is bound and blessed as an offering to the aforementioned deities and spirits of the field.
Folk customs include decorating the village well and springs, holding a grand feast of the gathered harvest, and baking a bread in honor of Freyr to give him at the end of and then plit among family. Preserving meats and vegetables was also done along this time of year and is a great time to start new batches of mead for upcoming blóts.
HaustblótĀ
This is the celebration of the Autumn Equinox, the second harvest of the season, and when Norse folk would start preparing for winter by bringing livestock + stored food inside. It is referenced to in the Ynglinga sagas as well as the Eddas. Itās not as celebrated in modern times but farmers and agriculturalists still celebrate it and you can too!!
It is another joyous holiday celebrated with grand bonfires, large feasts, drinking, and dancing. It is believed that villagers would cast the bones of their slaughtered cattle on the flames to help them survive the winter.
There is a belief that once the village fire and all other fires were extinguished the families would go back their homes and light their hearth from the common village flame, bonding the community! I donāt know if this true but Iāve heard the story a few times and I honestly love the idea of it.
VetrnƦtr/Ćlfablót
Otherwise known as Winters Night(or Samhain). This is the celebration of the last harvest, honoring of the landvƦttir, ancestors that protected the land through harvest, the vanir, paying respects to Death, and the welcoming of winter.Ā VetrnƦtr andĀ Ćlfablót are celebrations of the same holiday but Ćlfablót is a blót thatās held privately in the home on the day of VetrnƦtr.Ā Ā
Similar to Freyrfeast, for VetrnƦtr the last sheaf of wheat/grain was bundled up and blessed and often given as an offering to Ćưinn and his dead setting out for the Wild Hunt. It was believed with the start of the Wild Hunt the dead could return to the places where they had lived and a large feast, celebration, and fire were commonly used in their honor.Ā
This was also a time for serious contemplation of death. To the Norse people, death was always around the corner and was viewed as a natural part of life. Death wasnāt viewed as negatively as it is in modern times but rather the Norse lived their lives in a way to live & die with honor, so their future ancestors would have something to celebrate on this day.
Ćlfablót in particular was typically run by a woman but weāre past gender norms now so whoever is comfortable running a ritual do it. It is a sacrifice to Freyr and the elves of Alfheim, in honor of the families ancestors, the life force of the family and the hearth, and is believed to also be a ritual for fertility. It is done the night of VetrnƦtr.Ā Ā
Minor
These are not necessarily minor, they are just not holidays that I always keep up on, donāt celebrate, days of remembrance, etc. There are definitely more Scandinavian holidays Iām not including because Iām not knowledgeable on them all and theyāre not as widely celebrated(like celebrating Flag Day in America).
January 19 - Ćorrablót is an Icelandic midwinter feast in honor of winter and Ćorr which contains song, story telling, and traditional Icelandic foods like blóðmƶr and Brennivin. It is typically celebrated during Ćorri February 2 - Barri is the celebration of the union between Freyr and Gerd and a celebration of fertility and the earth. February 9 - Remembrance for Eyvind Kinnrifi, he refused to convert to Christianity soĀ Olaf Tryggvason tortured him to death. March 28 - Ragnar Lodbrok Day! Cheers to one the most legendary Vikings in history, King of Denmark and Sweden, and raider of Paris. April 31st-May 1stĀ - Waluburgis Night, a celebration of the saint Valborg a nun who was the niece of Saint Boniface.Ā May 9 - Remembrance for Gudrod of Gudbrandsdal, whose tongue was cut out by the Norwegian king āSt. Olafā for speaking out against the tyranny of the Christian Tryggvason, and urged others to resist him and continue worshiping the old gods.Ā May 20 - Frigg Blót! This actually a fave but itās not really major so Iām keeping it down here. Itās a celebration of warmth and spring. Traditionally the time of year to go camping, hold a bonfire, and perform a blót for Frigg and honor her as the All Mother, pray for good blessings and health to those of your hearth. June 8 - Lindisfarne Day: Itās believe that on this day in 793 CE three Viking ships raided the Isle of Lindisfarne which is marked as the start of the Viking age. July 9 - From the Laxdaela Saga, it is a day of Remembrance for Unn the Deep Minded, she was well-known and respected cheiftan in Iceland. October 8 - Day of Remembrance for Erik the Red, founder of Greenland. October 14 - Vetrablót is a celebration of the harvest and honors Freyja as the god of fertility and honors the disir as well. November 11 - Feast of the Einherjar, a holiday where the fallen heroes of all the halls(Valhalla, Fensalir, etc.) are remembered. November 27 - Feast of the winter and hunt godsĀ Ullr and Skadi, also a day to celebrate Weyland one of the greatest Germanic craftsmen.
