This chapter hurts so much. Everyone is so hopeful except for Enjolras, who’s seen that the army is advancing and has realized that he needs to let everyone know they’re going to die. And it’s hard for him to do! He hesitates before doing so, seeming to think about the best way to say this. 

The decision to accept that death ties the people to God, with Hugo explicitly saying this decision came from the divine. There’s also a shared popular spirit with the barricade of Saint Merry, where the same decision is made without direct communication.

thing is he only listened to the French version and is chronically offline, so he had no idea about the ~vernacular~
