Name change; or, how do I 301 redirect my social media life

One way to convert your animation frames into an animated.gif

Caveat: this uses command line stuff. Short version for Mac/Linux:

Install ImageMagick

Put all of your frames (image files) into their own folder if they're not already

In command line, navigate to that folder

Then enter the following command and you're done! convert -loop 0 -layers optimize *.png result.gif

If your render output was jpg then replace png with jpgin that command. This gives you an infinitely looping animated gif named "result.gif"

Sorry, no Windows love in this post because I don't have anything running Windows right now. ImageMagick is available for Windows, and I'm sure you can do the above, but I don't know the exact command.

The mechanics of -layers optimize is over my head, but it's done a good job of getting all of my gifs down to a reasonable size.

You can set a lot of other options in that one convert command like framerate and image size, this is explained here: [http://www.imagemagick.org/Usage/anim_basics/]

I used to make gifs in Photoshop. It's a perfectly fine method but doing it through the command line is SO much faster. Open terminal, type two lines, done. If I needed to do any tweaking and adjusting I'd probably use PS but usually I just want a quick gif to post on Tumblr or Twitter.

You could render straight to video and then convert that to a gif with ffmpeg or something but rendering individual frames is a good habit.

This is one artist I’ve been following on Youtube - she uses Krita for most (all?) of her digital painting, and for me a really good way to learn how to use something like Krita is watching someone really familiar with the software use it. (But of course the best way to learn is to practice!). She mostly does speedpaints, but there’s also a “what brushes I use in Krita” demo which nicely shows off some of Krita’s default brushes.

First! Model! Of! 2017! Based on original artwork by Stacy LeFevre.

The original piece was watercolor, so I thought it would be fun to reflect that in the texture. One minor bump in the road was that I don’t have a working Windows install any more (no Photoshop or SAI or Clip Studio ack), but that’s no excuse when there’s Krita! 

Krita is totally free digital painting software everyone should check out, available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. There are also these handy brushes from GDQuest. The cloud brush and the smoke brush were what I used for most of the texture painting here. On low opacity and large brush size there’s a pretty good watercolor effect. I linked the free version, which I think does have those two brushes. But if you have the dollars to spare I think the premium set is nice to have. I got in on it through Kickstarter and I use them all the time!

It looks like my recover and regroup (half-assed) hiatus is going to last a little longer than expected, but overall 2016 has been a very fun and rewarding year of 3D! Short Run is such! a! good! event! through and through, from location and logistics to the excellent folk on both sides of the table and behind the scenes.

It’s good/healthy/fun to talk about your work with a live person standing in front of you, and Short Run goers seem to be particularly excellent.*** I want to set up cat playdates with everyone who showed me pictures of their cats and update Some Things My Cats Have Tried to Eat since you and I both know that’s not anywhere close to an exhaustive list. So many people told me about the weird shit their cats try to eat and from this there is a strange and definite sense of camaraderie.  

*** though I live in Seattle so I get to start off on the right foot, in terms of not getting lost on the way to the venue and actually understanding when people talk about the city

Something new this year was that exhibitors could pre-order bahn mi. Let me say that again. Exhibitors could pre-order an extremely delicious lunch instead of worrying about packing something that’s not gonna spill in your bag or hoping one of your friends is nearby and can grab some lunch for you. 

Lastly but very importantly, the excellent exhibitors I know or got to meet yesterday made the fest just that much more enjoyable! It’s Gud Comix - Tony Morse - Coin-Op - APRIL Festival

Haven’t drawn on a tablet in a while, finally took a crack at medibang while traveling.

Snagged a used Samsung tablet recently. Still dreaming about the ipad pro but a rooted 8" android tablet is a pretty nice thing to have. As for medibang: love the curve tool. There's some wacky but weirdly useful auto-tapering on the pen tool. Need to color pick by selecting the tool first though, rather than with a long press.
