For some reason, every time I read your Sacrifice AU I keep picturing Hiccup as his bearded self in the HTTYD 3 epilogue lol. I have no idea why.

He is a little beardy! Not like a full beard like Epilogue Hiccup, but definitely a decent amount of scruff. Sacrifice!Hiccup is too busy (and usually drunk) to keep up with trimming his facial hair.

I think sexuality is something that can’t be deduced from speculation, especially two to ten minutes of screen time.

Zephyr, yes. Nuffink, no. 

I really don’t get to say much, because Cressida chose them herself. But it really bothers me that Hiccup, who had such a complex about his name, would give his child a name that implies that he’s-- well-- nothing. He should understand better than anybody the impact a name has on a kid. It’s a similar reason to why I never liked when people used Stoick as a name for a Hiccstrid son. There’s a particular episode in either RoB or DoB where Hiccup specifically talks about his name and how it bothers him. And it played such a huge role in his self esteem. So naming his son Nuffink just kind of irks me and breaks my immersion a little bit.

So, I recently decided to reread wild hearts (originally read back when you were still writing it) and I got about halfway through when I saw you posting about the sacrifice au, so I switched gears and got caught up on that one... and now I'm going back to wild hearts and I'm like... there's my feral hiccup baby I missed so much. Do you have a favorite hiccup? I really think feral hiccup is my favorite.

I’d definitely say Sacrifice Hiccup. I do love feral Hic, but he’s difficult to write. Feral Hiccup is naive, hopeful, and I have to balance his ignorance about Viking culture with his intelligent, curious nature. Sacrifice Hiccup comes easily, partly because he’s closer to canon Hiccup, and partly because it’s easier for me to write a darker character than a more innocent character. I guess maybe I relate to Sacrifice Hiccup a little bit, but I can get into his head a lot without too much guess work.

In the newest chapter in Scars We Give, how far along are Astrid in her pregnancy?

As of the last chapter, she’s about thirteen, fourteen weeks. She’s got a little bump and her clothes are starting to get too snug.

I was rereading wild hearts and I have a question. How would hiccup deal with being the heir. I mean canon hiccup has always known he was going to be chief and has being reluctant. But this is something new to feral hiccup, what's going to happen when he starts to fully understand what it means and how wikk this affect his relationship with Astrid? Thanks for this amazing fic

It’s definitely something that he honestly hasn’t realized the scope of. The weight of it kind of hits him at first, when he finds out that he’s the true heir and not Snotlout. It’s shocking to him, but to be honest, “heir” doesn’t mean much to him yet other than a person of high political status. He doesn’t have a full grasp of the implications. We don’t get much of his internal dialogue about it, partly because it’s not from his point of view and partly because Stoick not being chief is something that they/Berk don’t see happening for a very long time. To be frank, I probably should have covered that topic a little bit before the Vikings sailed for Helheim, just a brief scene where Stoick has the if-something-happens-to-me talk with Hiccup. But I’m not a perfect writer. *shrug*

Absolutely, though, he would eventually be hit with the significance of the idea of being chief. Part of him would be kind of reluctant to accept the idea, because as of this moment, he still feels like Vikings are this separate culture, not a people that he belongs to, much less has any authority over. He might even insist that Snotlout should take the throne, because it’s what he grew up learning to do. Stoick and a few others won’t have it, of course. It will take him a few years of integrating himself into Berk that he feels like the role of chief is something that he can and will do. And honestly, it takes about that long for Berk to come to terms with the idea, because right now he’s still a suspicious outsider. Astrid will be huge in his adjustment period. She’s always going to be the person who helps him become involved in Viking culture, and Berk uses his interactions with her and the rest of the dragon riders as a way to get to know and trust him. 

I can assure you, it wouldn’t be like the movies where Stoick passes on the mantle once Hiccup’s in his early twenties. Stoick would take lots of time to make sure that Hiccup understands what his duties would entail, for him and the village to get used to each other. He wouldn’t step down simply because Hiccup was old enough to take over. And I don’t plan on killing off Stoick any time soon. So most likely, Stoick would rule for another decade or more before Hiccup steps into the position of chief.

I will raise you– Hiccup is the exact type of boyfriend/husband to buy matching shirts without telling Astrid. So she comes downstairs in the morning. Hiccup is sipping a cup of coffee, leaning against the kitchen counter, wearing the exact same Juicy sweatshirt. And he says, “Well, one of us is going to have to change.”

Omg are you serious? @wilderwestking the audacity.

Kidding.

First thing first, no I haven’t. But to be honest, I’m not worried about it. There are several Sacrifice AUs that have popped up in the fandom since I first posted mine, and that’s okay with me. I’m not gonna lie, it’s a bomb ass premise. But I’ve been in the fandom for years now-- I know most of the writers in the fanfiction circles at least from a distance. And I think it was Mark Twain that said, “There’s no such thing as an original idea.” I had the first sacrifice au, yeah, but there’s lots of room for people to have their own takes on things. Nobody’s going to write exactly like me, have all my thoughts, do things the way I do them. 

Now, if you guys see something that’s like a serious look-a-like, like straight up text that’s been stolen or scenes that match up almost word for word, yeah, tell me. But for the most part, unless it’s one of my original works, which I almost never post on my tumblr, it’s cool with me. The more fanfiction in our fandom, the better. I always appreciate you guys letting me know when new ones pop up. I do like a heads up, just so I can be prepared if anyone asks about it in the future, and it reminds me that I have people watching my back out there. But please don’t antagonize other writers for trying something similar unless there is legitimate plagiarism happening.

EDIT: For the record, I do not read other Sacrifice AUs. Have not before and will not ever. Just for my sake, I need to be able to know that all my details and ideas were mine alone, not influenced in any way by anybody else.
