I spent some time today cleaning a local forest as an act of devotation / worship and while doing so i realized that i don't actually see a lot of advice on how to litter pick responsibly in heathen / pagan spaces just the advice to litter pick.

So here's my advice

- check if there's legislation around litter picking in your area [yes sometimes that's a thing] especially if you're planning to do more then just a trash bag a go or doing this as a group!

- make sure there's a place to dispose of the trash you picked up before you start!

- set a rule to yourself to not touch anything duiring litter picking with your hands get a litter picker or some really good gloves [if using gloves don't touch yourself w those]

- duiring litter picking i adhear to the idea that there is only trash and nature there is no shiny things you want to take home even if thst thing you found is really cool.

- fruit cores, fruit peels ect that do not appear naturally in the area you're cleaning are considered trash as well.

-i like to stick to places where i know a lot of people come and go, major paths the enterence of a park ect litter picking for me is spent inna different part of nature then when i go into nature for my own walks. I want to prevent the trash that gets discarded here from finding it's way further into the forest where it will be harder to clean later.

- stick to it! Stick to it in the same area and slowly expand that area it took me 20 minutes to fill up my first trash bag now it takes me over an hour in that same area!

Yes i'm aware most of this is probably considered common sense by a lot of people , but i want to see it be spoken about more so here i am screaming into the well

If you litter pick too tell me the weirdest thing you've found!! Mine's a Pikachu wallet stuffed with kitkat wrappers that all fell out when i grabbed it :')

Some AAVE speakers pluralize 'child' as 'childrens'. People get racist about this ("It's already plural!"), but 'children' actually comes from Middle English speakers doing the same thing: slapping their plural marker on word already pluralized by an extinct plural marker.

To oversimplify: in Old English, 'childer' ('ċildra') was the plural of 'child' ('ċild'). Middle English developed an '-en' plural marker, which we see in 'oxen'. Every so often I’ll see posts from people trying to work out whether they ‘count’ as something - usually some type of LGBTQIA, sometimes neurodiverse, sometimes disabled

And as they talk about it, it’ll become clear that they’re thinking about that label because there’s something in their life that’s uncomfortable, and they can see people with that label NOT doing that thing, and they’re wondering if they have a right to also not do it.

So this is me, giving you permission. Label or not, YOU ARE ALLOWED to:

"First drafts are always bad" does not--

I emphasize: DOES NOT mean that it is poorly written.

It does not mean the story is bad. Or the concept is bad. Or the words themselves are bad.

It means it is rough. It is unedited. It is not submittable, saleable, ready for publication. It's raw and messy and needs work.

As all first drafts do.

Even professionals at it for decades, dominating the industry, do not write a publishable piece of fiction when they sit down to write.

If you've seen videos of artists working from rough sketch to final piece you can compare the two.

Your first draft is bad because it is a draft.

Reminding new authors of this is a way to lessen the fear of perfection. To get out of your head and just write. To let them know it doesn't have to be perfect it just has to be written. You can fix whatever you hate in revision. You're going to be revising anyway. No matter how great the first draft reads you will be revising it. Probably more than once. So don't worry if it isn't perfect first time out.

It is not meant to be an aggressive and cruel expectation or condemnation of beginners or some declaration that your first draft must be terrible or you've failed somehow.

That is asinine.

You are writers, you understand words and their meanings so for the love of those words would you please act like it.

something my rabbi has said a few times that I find super fascinating is that one way to read the relationship between the Jewish people and Hashem is as a relationship between lovers (kind of along the same lines as how on Shabbat we frame Shabbat as a bride and the Jewish people collectively as the groom).

other groups of people have relationships with Hashem, but the relationship between Jews and Hashem is unique and is one we and Hashem both chose

one reason that we actively choose to follow the commandments in the Torah is because we're aligning our interests with Hashem's, and sometimes that means doing things that look irrational to people outside the relationship but that make sense to us

sometimes a relationship between lovers is erotic! in that light it makes complete sense to include the Shir Hashirim in the Tanakh

take this with a slight grain of salt because I'm paraphrasing verbal conversations that I had probably a few weeks ago, but regardless of this post's exact accuracy the idea is really fun to throw back and forth with a rabbi!
