One thing that pisses me off about Christians is that even the ‘good’ ones can’t stand the idea of Christians being bad people. You show them an example of Christianity being used to justify atrocities and you’re met with Christians crying ‘but Jesus wouldn’t do that!’ Or worse, ‘those people aren’t real Christians! They don’t speak for us!’ Yes, they are real Christians, because like it or not, they are, or were Christians just like you.
The Teutonic Order wasn’t Jewish, or Muslim, it was Christian. The Nazi party was Christian, deeply so, and it sold people ‘family values’ and idyllic visions of blonde, blue eyed children raised by Christian mothers. Colonialists throughout history have tried to eradicate people’s native faiths and force them to convert to Christianity. The Salem witch trials saw women being burned at the stake for practicing witchcraft, or just doing anything that men didn’t like. The Catholic Church opposed women’s rights, and for years, it covered up the sexual abuse of children within the church. The Catholic Church. Christian institutions. Not Jewish, not Satanic, not Hindu, Christian institutions are the ones responsible for all of these atrocities.
‘But Jesus wouldn’t approve of that!’
And what if he did? Would that make any of the above ok? It wouldn’t. Jesus is not your get out of jail free card, and you cannot use him to avoid confronting the atrocities that Christians have committed. The opinion of one person you like cannot override historical facts.
Some affirmations for people with trauma caused by christianity:
There is no such thing as original sin
You are not inherently evil or sinful
Making mistakes doesn’t make you evil or sinful. It makes you human, and all humans make mistakes
You do not deserve eternal torment for any reason
You do not deserve eternal torment for being queer
You do not deserve eternal torment for being neurodivergent
You are not a bad person for leaving the church
You deserve love
You deserve respect
You deserve freedom from the church
Sometimes I want to throttle christians who play the holier-than-thou card against pagans with the "your religion is dead," because who's fucking fault is that exactly?
I constantly need to remind Christians that other religions don't see genocide as an accomplishment.
things christianity taught me as a child:
you are being watched at all times
you are being judged for every thought and action you take
if your motives are not 100% selfless then anything good you do doesn't count
you deserve nothing except pain by virtue of being human
you are inherently evil and your evil nature is constantly trying to escape
you need outside help to stop this from happening; you are helpless against it
nevertheless you must at all times exhibit the qualities of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness and self-control. no matter what!
they way other people treat you shouldn't ever cause you to have a negative reaction (turn the other cheek!)
you can only be redeemed by someone else loving you
a man you never met had to die horrifically because of what you did and who you are. he was much better than you and you owe him forever.
it's okay for a parent to kill their child if it's divinely ordered
if you don't proselytize then people will be tormented for all eternity. just like you deserve if you don't persist in your faith!
...and we haven't even broken into the weird culty fundamentalist beliefs yet. That came later in my life. This is all from mainstream christianity.
But yeah let's keep spreading those good christian values because it comforts people and provides them with a sense of community! Which are all famously not available through any other means.
if any christians try to "ohh i'm so sorry" "that would never happen in my sect" aka "no true scotsman" on this post, you are getting blocked and god told me he is disappointed in you personally. find a new hobby. or try listening instead of dismissing for once.
Any person: *Talks about how Christianity ruined their life, and how Christian institutions gave their abusers access to them, and how the bible is used to justify abuse, slavery, misogyny, rape, and bigotry against homosexuals, with explicit verses condoning all of those things*
Christians: But they’re not real Christians! I’m Christian and I don’t do that! Jesus wouldn’t approve of that! Jesus loves you! God is good! God loves you! Christianity is good! We don’t care what actually happened to you, we just don’t like you viewing our religion in a negative light and we’re using it to silence you! We’re good people and we deserve Heaven! 😇
What girls and women are taught about God directly sets them up for abuse from men. We were told that God is our father and is all loving, but that he punishes disobedience by sending us to be tortured forever. Furthermore, this punishment is not a contradiction, but a sign of his love for us.
When women are taught that the model for a father, god himself, is violent and vindictive, she is taught to expect that from male authorities in her life. When a husband or father hurts her, that is a sign of his love. He is only mirroring God.
When women are taught they if they don’t serve God, she will be sent to hell, that models her service to the men in her life. She must serve her husband like she serves God, and if she doesn’t she deserves what she gets, because the punishment is from her husband, her model of God.
When women are taught that even thinking ill of God is a sin, we are therefore taught that thinking of husbands, fathers, and pastors, in any negative way is a sin.
This is a psychological trap that functions to keep women in service to men. The contradiction of an all loving and violent god isn’t a mistake. It’s to teach women that violence is love.
the procrastinator’s mind will invent distractions you’ve never conceived of in order to avoid tasks even a dog could do.
I feel like it would help people move on so much faster if they looked at something a person they once considered close did and just went “a friend probably wouldn’t do this to me” . Like actually. A friend would not do this to you .
