“Mercurius” by Artus Quellinus (17th Century).

It is said in some esoteric texts that the Olympic Spirit Ophiel is the ruler of those things which are attributed to Mercury.

In this sense we could say that Ophiel is the Spirit and Essence of Mercury, and all that Mercury/Hermes stands for.

These texts also say that the Olympic Spirits rule over a period of 490 years, with each taking their turn in Chaldean Order. Ophiel assumed rulership from the Spirit of Venus in 1900, the beginning of the 20th Century.

Since Mercury is the God of Language and Magic, and so Information, we can say that since the world has become a world of information, it accords with the current ruling Spirit of the Age.

Mercury is the Magician (Magus/Mage) of the Tarot Major Arcana, the 22 major Archetypes that exist in our reality.
