Pregnant Amal Clooney dazzles in $5,400 red dress

She’s an incredibly smart human rights lawyer who gives the Duchess of Cambridge a run for her money when it comes to style clout. Oh, and she’s also married to George Clooney.

Ringing in spring in floral shoes

On March 29, the 39-year-old human rights lawyer gave a speech at London’s Chatham House addressing war crimes in Syria and Iraq. For the occasion, the soon-to-be mom of twins stepped out in a stunning crimson red vintage Dior dress that reportedly costs around $5,400 CAD. The hidden meaning behind Queen Elizabeth II’s purses

You think the Duchess of Cambridge has an impressive handbag collection? Just wait until you see Queen Elizabeth II’s.

According to Laurer London CEO Gerald Bodmer, the 89-year-old royal has purchased more than 200 purses from the luxury handbag company. Yes, two hundred bags.

And they’re not cheap, either -- the Daily Mail reports that each bag costs £1,650 ($3,000 CAD). That’s a whopping $600,000 worth of bags.

That may seem a little much, but the brand is quick to note that the Queen often recycles her multitude of bags for different events, and will frequently have the fittings replaced instead of purchasing a new one. And, she’s apparently kept all of the Queen Mother’s bags, too. Plus, she received her first from the brand in 1968.

According to the Daily Mail, Buckingham Palace usually commissions five bags per year.

Despite the high price tag of the royal-approved bag, it’s obvious the Queen gets a lot of use from her hefty handbag collection. She’s rarely seen without a Laurer bag hanging from the crook of her arm -- even when she’s at home. 

In 2015, the Queen made headlines when she clutched her handbag throughout a meeting with Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau at Buckingham Palace. But there’s a reason (and it’s not just that she loves her bags).

According to The Telegraph, her purse is used for much more than just a place to store her lipstick -- it’s used to send important signals to her staff.

“If the Queen places her handbag on the table at dinner, it signals that she wants the event to end in the next five minutes,” a 2012 story claims. “If she puts her bag on the floor, it shows she’s not enjoying the conversation and wants to be rescued by her lady-in-waiting.”

And, according to a PEOPLE article, if she moves her bag from arm to arm, you’re in trouble, too.

"It would be very worrying if you were talking to the Queen and saw the handbag move from one hand to the other," royal historian Hugo Vickers told the magazine. This means that she’s ready to wrap things up.

But the biggest indicator the Queen is ready to get out: spinning her ring, Vickers says. That apparently indicates to staff she needs to be rescued immediately.

It’s kind of genius, no? Of course the Queen has a way to get out of an awkward conversation more easily than the rest of us plebeians. We’ve got some serious work to do, guys.

But what does she keep in it? For the most part, it’s pretty simple stuff, according to royal experts: a camera, glasses, sunglasses, lipstick (Clarins is reportedly her go-to brand), a hankerchief, and a little bit of cash for church collection.

According to Phil Dampier in What's In The Queen's Handbag: And Other Royal Secrets, she also carries some more personal items -- like good luck charms including miniature dogs, horses and saddles. Dampier claims she also keeps family photos including one of Prince Andrew after his safe return from the Falklands in 1982. Oh, and she apparently carries purse hooks to fasten under the table so her handbag never has to touch the ground. 

"She would feel lost without it," Dampier told People magazine last year. about the importance of Her Majesty’s handbag. "It's her most valued possession and a valuable tool. The Queen would never go anywhere without her handbag. The only time she might not have it by her side is when she is in a completely relaxed environment.”

Amal Clooney certainly knows how to rock cold weather florals. While attending the premiere of the Netflix documentary “The White Helmets” in London, the gorgeous human rights lawyer stepped out in a chic floral sheath by Dolce & Gabbana. She paired the pretty frock with textured black tights and ankle boots, and wore her hair in loose waves. For a night out in Santa Monica, Clooney showed off her abs in a sexy black lace crop paired with jeans, studded Balenciaga sandals and a black jacket.

Royals who have doubled as magazine cover stars

We all remember the Duchess of Cambridge’s stunning Vogue cover shoot -- but she’s not the only royal to transform into a glossy magazine’s cover model. 

For Town & Country’s February 2016 issue, Prince Harry showed off his smouldering gaze on the magazine’s cover -- and for a good cause, too. He allowed a reporter from the magazine to accompany him on a trip to Africa where he helped rescue 500 elephants.

And Harry is far from the first royal to cover a major glossy. Between Princess Diana, the Duchess of Cambridge, Queen Rania of Jordan and even Prince William, click through the gallery to see some of our favourite royal cover stars.

Prince Harry, Town & Country (February 2016)

Yes, Prince Harry is showing off his baby blues on the most recent cover of Town & Country -- but this is one you’ll want to read for the articles, too. For the magazine’s February issue, the royal allowed a reporter to accompany him on a trip to southeastern Africa, with the nonprofit conservation organization African Parks, to rescue 500 elephants. In the issue, he explained how after his mother’s death in 1997, Africa was one of the first places he visited -- and after returning multiple times, he now associates the continent with a sense of peace. ““This is where I feel more like myself than anywhere else in the world,” he said. “I wish I could spend more time in Africa. I have this intense sense of complete relaxation and normality here. To not get recognized, to lose myself in the bush with what I would call the most down-to-earth people on the planet, people [dedicated to conservation] with no ulterior motives, no agendas, who would sacrifice everything for the betterment of nature… I talk to them about their jobs, about what they do. This kid is learning to cook and do chores because ‘household work isn't just for women’

When it comes to gender roles, society has gotten a lot better -- but there are some people who still instill in their kids from a young age that some tasks, like cooking and cleaning, should be left to the ladies.

Not so for "16 and Pregnant" star Nikkole Paulun.

Recently, the mom of two took to Facebook to show how she teaches her son that household chores are not just a female’s task.

“I teach my son to cook and do household chores. Why? Because household work isn't just for women,” she wrote in the post, which has been shared more than 55,000 times since being posted. “Because one day he might be a single man, living on his own, who will actually know how to do laundry and not eat take out every night.”

The post is accompanied by three photos of her son making a grilled cheese, doing the dishes and doing a load of laundry, and goes on to say that a child growing up to become a productive member of society starts with the parents.

“Because one day he might want to impress a significant other with a meal cooked by his own hands. Because one day when he has kids and a spouse, he's going to need to do his fair share around the home. Because I live in a generation of people who complain that school didn't teach us how to cook, do laundry, tie a tie, or pay taxes.”

But it’s not just about practical skills. 

“My son will never be too ‘manly’ to cook or do chores,” she continued. “He will be the kind of man who can come inside from changing a tire to check on his pot roast. Who can properly sort his laundry and mow the lawn too. Remember parents, a man who believes he shouldn't have to cook or do chores was once a boy who was never taught any better.”

Preach, ma! 

Some were quick to criticize Paulun’s post, saying it may be a double standard.

“Will you teach daughters to do yard work, change a tire and mow the lawns, or the typical response of that's a man's job only goes one way?” asked Scottie Wade.

“You do not have kids to be your slave! Or to do the chores that you yourself don't want to do. I agree with teaching responsibility! But enough is enough,” said Tammy Ballavance. 

But many commenters praised the mom.

“Good job mama!,” wrote Angela Annette Foster. “My boys (2 & 4) also do laundry, dishes, and help cook.”

“Who are these idiots who don't care for your ideas about raising your son? When I went off to college very few boys knew how to do anything. I did because I was taught by a mother like you. I can cook, wash, iron and clean as good as any woman and could do it before I graduated high school,” wrote Billy Brasher. “I have two sisters who know how to do so called ‘woman's work’ and they can do anything a man can do. We were blessed with a mother who loved us enough to not send us into the world unprepared. You are to be commended for your support and love of your son. You go, girl!”

The total cost of Kate’s Canadian royal tour wardrobe is a whopping $120,000

The royals have packed up their bags and jetted back to England after an eight-day whirlwind trip to the West Coast of Canada. 

One of the highlights of the trip -- besides, of course, seeing the adorable Prince George and Prince Charlotte in Canada for the very first time, was the steady stream of gorgeous outfits displayed by the Duchess of Cambridge.

Princess Kate outdid herself on the tour, stepping out in everything from Canadian-inspired red frocks to casual sweaters -- and she even showed off in some Canadian designs. But it all came at a price...and a pretty high one at that. 

The total cost of all of Kate’s various looks? A whopping $119,438 CAD. Scroll through the gallery above to see how it breaks down. 

One caveat: We totalled the cost of items worn per day, which meant sometimes doubling up on items she wore more than once on the tour (like her $8,500 Cartier watch). Feel free to take out the cost of rewears if you please!

Day 1: Arriving in Victoria -- TOTAL COST: $26,265

To arrive in Canada, the Duchess turned to a bespoke blue sheath dress by one of her favourite designers, Jenny Packham, which cost approximately $5,000. She wore a pair of her favourite Gianvito Rossi suede pumps, which retail for $935, and carried a $330 L.K. Bennett clutch. She finished of the look with a pair of $15,000 diamond and sapphire G. Collins & Sons earrings, and topped things off with a custom-made Lock & Co. fascinator, which reportedly cost around $5,000. The maple leaf broach, which she borrowed from the Queen, is a priceless family heirloom. 

Day 2: Vancouver -- TOTAL COST: $16,855

For a day out and about in Vancouver, the Duchess shone in a Canadian flag-inspired bespoke Alexander McQueen frock, that reportedly cost around $6,700. She took the Canadiana look even further by combining a red suede Miu Miu clutch ($1,330) with red suede pumps from Russell & Bromley, which will set you back $295. Her earrings are reportedly from Heavenly Necklaces, and are quite affordable -- retailing for around $30. The watch? Not so much. The stunning Cartier time piece retails for $8,500, doubling the total cost of the look.

Day 3: Bella Bella -- TOTAL COST: $2,255

For a rainy day in Bella Bella, B.C., the Duchess kept dry in a $680 Hollad & Holland hunting jacket and her favourite Penelope Chilvers tasselled riding boots, which retail for around $810. She’s had the riding boots for more than a decade -- so we assuming the cost per wear is pretty low these days. The rest of her look was fairly affordable: A $105 J. Crew sweater, an $85 Topshop shirt and $65 jeans from Zara. She finished the look off with a pair of earrings by Canadian-born London-based designer Pippa Small retail for around $510. 

Day 3: Dinner in Victoria -- TOTAL COST: $4,370

After a whirlwind day in Bella Bella, the Duke and Duchess headed back to Victoria, where they attended a dinner reception. Princess Kate stunned in a $2,375 Preen dress with an asymmetrical neckline and full midi skirt. She wore the same Russell & Bromley red suede pumps she showed off on day 2, which you’ll remember retail for $295. Her pearl earrings reportedly cost $220, while her custom Jenny Packham clutch runs about $1,450. Once again, she accessorized with the Queen’s maple leaf broach. 

Day 4: Touring the Oakanagan Valley and arriving in Whitehorse -- TOTAL COST: $14,845

For a day of engagements in Kelowna, B.C., the Duchess reached for a gorgeous green Dolce & Gabbana frock, retailing for $4,650. She combined the lovely dress with two neutral items from one of her favourite brands, L.K. Bennett: the Nina clutch ($315) and the Fern pumps ($330). She kept her peepers protected in a pair of $175 Ray-Ban Wayfarers and accessorized with her favourite Cartier watch ($8,500) and a stunning pair of emerald-hued earrings that run for $235. Later in the day, when the royals jetted off to the Yukon, Kate cozied up in one of her favourite Hobbs coats, which retails for around $640. 

Day 5: Whitehorse -- TOTAL COST: $13,780

The Duchess of Cambridge braved the chilly weather in Whitehorse in a $2,500 Carolina Herrera coat. She debuted a new pair of Tod’s pumps with kiltie detailing, retailing for $345, which matched her $1,035 burgundy suede Mulberry clutch. Again, she showed off her prized $8,500 Cartier watch, and wore $1,400 pearl earrings. 

Day 5: Carcross -- TOTAL COST: $1,940

After a day out and about in Whitehorse, the Duchess reportedly headed back to her hotel and changed into something a little more casual for further engagements in Carcross, Yukon. It was also the first time on the tour she debuted a Canadian-designed garment -- she turned to one of Sophie Gregoire Trudeau’s favourite brands, Sentaler, for this ribbed wrap coat that costs $1,195 -- and, in true Kate fashion, has already been backordered until February 2017. The rest of her look was slightly more affordable. Her western-inspired Shoes R. Soles will set you back about $525, while her J. Crew sweater (the same one she wore on day 3 in Bella Bella) costs $105. Her earrings, designed by local Carcross designer Shelley Macdonald, cost approximately $115.

Day 6: Military children’s party in Victoria -- TOTAL COST: $3,303

After two days in the Yukon, the Duke and Duchess rejoined Prince George and Princess Charlotte in Victoria where the family spent the afternoon at an outdoor party. Princess Kate somehow kept her $605 cream-coloured See by Chloe dress free from stains -- same goes for her matching $235 Acne Studios belt and $78 Monsoon taupe wedges. She accessorized with $2,385 Kiki McDonough leaf earrings. 

Day 7: In Haida Gwaii -- TOTAL COST: $11,755

For the second last day of the royal tour, Catherine went for an equestrian-style look in an $800 army green blazer (aptly, the style name is “The Duchess”) designed by Canadian brand Smythe’s fall collection -- one of her favourites, and a brand she’s worn numerous times before. Underneath the blazer, she sported a new Alice Temperley blouse ($135), and finished things off with her trusty $65 Zara jeans and the same Shoes R. Soles boots she wore on day five in Whitehorse, which cost $525. Her beautiful Kiki McDonaugh citrine drop earrings cost about $850, and s she has many times on the tour, the Duchess also showed off her $8,500 Cartier watch. Later in the day while going fishing, she ditched the blazer and blouse and opted for for a ruby red sweater from British brand, Really Wild, which costs about $285, and topped it off with a $595 wax parka from Troy London. 

Day 8: Engagements in Victoria -- TOTAL COST: $18,772

For the last day of the royal tour, the Duchess wore a white Zara blazer from 2015 (approximately $170), cream H&M top (approximately $19) and J. Crew tweed pumps, costing $353. She wore a cute (but expensive!) charm necklace, which will set you back about $16,150, as well as $550 pearl earrings and  $850 gold and diamond hoops. Later in the day she switched out her white blazer for the same $595 Troy London jacket she wore on day 7 and kept things casual with bright white Superga sneakers, which retail for $85. 

Day 8: Departing from Canada -- TOTAL COST: $5,298

After a whirlwind eight days in Canada, the royal family departed from Victoria, B.C. on Oct. 1. As is tradition, the Duchess pulled out one final impressive outfit -- a gorgeous cream Catherine Walker coat dress, which experts say could have cost up to $5,000. In keeping with the neutral theme, she wore her trusty L.K. Bennett Floret pumps ($298) and the same diamond maple leaf broach (on loan from Queen Elizabeth II) that she wore while arriving to Canada last Saturday.

They’re here! On Saturday, Sept. 24, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, alongside with Prince George and Princess Charlotte, arrived in Victoria, B.C. for an 8-day trip of Canada.

There are a lot of things we love about the Duchess of Cambridge -- she’s an advocate for important causes, and seamlessly balances her royal duties with being a mom to her two children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte. 

And did we mention she’s not afraid to re-wear her favourite wardrobe staples?

While many with Princess Kate’s style icon status don’t blink an eye at donning a completely new outfit every time they step out, that’s not the case for this 34-year-old royal. Green Hobbs coatdress

While arriving to the Yukon on Sept. 27 as part of the royal family’s eight day trip of Canada, the Duchess of Cambridge braved the chilly weather in a hunter green wool coatdress from British brand Hobbs. It’s one we’ve seen before -- Princess Kate stepped out in the elegant coat for St. Patrick’s Day in 2014, accoessorized with a colour-coordinated fascinator. 

Floral LK Bennett dress

After a month-long hiatus from public events, the Duchess of Cambridge was back out and about on Aug. 24 for a series of royal engagements. To brave the hot weather, which apparently reached a high of 32C, Princess Kate turned to one of her favourite brands, LK Bennett. She opted for a chic white dress with blue floral detailing -- a frock she first debuted on the royal family’s trip to Australia and New Zealand in 2014. 

Yellow Roksanda Ilincic dress

We first saw the Duchess step out in this brightly-coloured frock while arriving to Australia for the royal family’s tour in 2014. The dress, by Serbian-British designer Roksanda Ilincic, was said to be a nod to one of Australia’s national colours (gold) -- but Kate told reporters Prince William said it made her look “like a banana.” Rude! Clearly Will’s comments didn’t leave a lasting impression on the Duchess, though -- she stepped out wearing the frock again for this year’s Wimbledon tournament. 

Sequined Jenny Packham gown

On June 23, the Duchess attended a fundraising gala in a beautiful blush sequined gown by one of her favourite designers, Jenny Packham. It’s a gown we’ve seen before -- almost exactly five years ago. In June 2011, shortly after her marriage to Prince William, Princess Kate stepped out in the same stunning gown for a swanky gala dinner at Kensington Palace. Why mess with a good thing?

Cream Day Birger et Mikkelsen coat

On June 14, the Duchess attended a garden party in Belfast, Northern Ireland in a stunning cream coat by Birger et Mikkelsen. If you’re hoping to mimic her look, however, you’re probably out of luck -- this is one the Duchess has had in her closet for 10 years! We first spotted her wearing this back in 2006 when she attended Laura Parker Bowles’s wedding as boyfriend Prince William’s date. She’s worn it at least two times since -- and even pulled out the timeless number for Zara Phillips’s wedding in 2011.

Red Catherine Walker dress

The Duchess is a huge fan of Catherine Walker -- who was also one of Princess Diana’s favourite designers -- and wears her clothing often. For the 2016 Garter Day service, Princess Kate wore a stunning red coat dress with a matching red fascinator and suede pumps. It’s a look we’ve seen before -- while visiting the Calgary Zoo on her Canadian tour in 2011, the newly-minted royal wore the bright red look (with a maple leaf broach). 

White Alexander McQueen dress

Oh, how time flies! For Princess Charlotte’s christening in July 2015, the Duchess wore a stunning white Alexander McQueen dress with matching white pumps. For 2016′s Trooping The Colour, the Queen’s official birthday celebration, she re-wore the same dress while showing off her adorable family.

Cream Alexander McQueen dress 

All eyes were on the first-time mom in October 2013 when she stepped out in a gorgeous ruffled Alexander McQueen frock for Prince George’s christening. This year, she re-wore the same dress for the Queen’s garden party. 

Green Catherine Walker coat

While touring Australia and New Zealand in 2014, the Duchess wore a Catherine Walker coat dress in one of Australia’s national colours. This year, she re-wore the bright number to attend the Chelsea Flower Show in London.

Nautical-themed Alexander McQueen dress

For a day of yachting engagements in May, the Duchess wore this nautical-inspired Alexander McQueen look. It’s one she’s worn not once, but twice, before -- once in 2015 for a visit to Bletchley Park, the central site for Britain's codebreakers during World War II, and once in 2011. 

Pink Alexander McQueen peplum dress

While stepping out to view her Vogue photos at the National Portrait Gallery earlier this year, the Duchess wore a pale pink peplum Alexander McQueen look. We’ve seen it a handful of times -- including when she awkwardly played with turntables while visiting Australia and New Zealand two years ago.

Grey Roksanda Ilincic dress

Kate loves this belted greyish-lavender Roksanda Ilincic frock, as she’s shown multiple times. Most recently, she wore it while attending a day of engagements in May.

Michael Kors coat dress

A coat that stands the test of time, no doubt. We first saw the Duchess sport this A-line tweed Michael Kors coat while touring New Zealand and Australia.

M Missoni coat

Kate loves this autumn/winter 2010 M Missoni coat so much that she’s worn it several times over the past few years -- including to a 2014 wedding where another guest awkwardly wore the same coat. 

Green Sportmax coat

For a rainy Christmas Day service, the Duchess debuted a new hunter green belted coat by Sportmax, a spinoff of Max Mara. In February of this year, she re-wore it while attending a tennis workshop at a Edinburgh high school.

Red LK Bennett coat

A tried and tested favourite comes in the form of this long red coat dress from one of the Duchess’s go-to brands, LK Bennett. The royal has been rocking this coat for at least five years -- she was first spotted wearing it on a trip to Denmark in 2011, just a few months after officially becoming the Duchess of Cambridge.

We were blown away by the beauty of this Alexander McQueen coatdress when Kate wore it back in 2014 while touring Australia and New Zealand, so we were thrilled to see her sport it again while visiting an air cadet base this February.

A teacher told a grade 6 student this skirt was for 'clubbing'

On Wednesday, grade 6 student Reese Webster got up for school and dressed in her school’s uniform T-shirt, suede booties and a button-up denim skirt — one she’d already worn several times in the first few weeks of the school year at Moultrie Middle School in Mount Pleasant, S.C.

A few hours later, her mom Suzie got a call from Reese in the principal’s office, asking her to bring her a pair of pants because her skirt was deemed “too short” for the classroom.

“Now those of you who know me well, know that I am a very laid back, super chill Mom, who tends to let her girls fight their own battles in life. However, this one hit me the wrong way,” Suzie wrote in a Facebook post.

“I found out that Reese was called out in the hallway surrounded by other kids and told to go to the office because her skirt was too short and needed to be replaced. Also, the teacher told her she looked like she should ‘be clubbing,'” Suzie continued.  “What? I don’t know too many women who wear a boxy T-shirt and an A-line preppy denim skirt to go clubbing. Perhaps it was her scandalous ankle boots.”

It gets worse. Reportedly, when Reese was in the office, school officials got out a measuring tape to measure if the skirt fell within the school’s rules of being no more than 5 inches above the knee — it did. According to Suzie, at that point, the school backtracked and said Reese could continue wearing the skirt.

“However at this point she was so embarrassed that she asked to change into her pants and told him she would not wear the skirt again,” she said. Suzie added that Reese kept apologizing throughout the whole ordeal.

In her Facebook post, Susie explained that she didn’t take issue with the school enforcing dress code (which Reese’s outfit fell within anyway), but rather they way they did it.

“I told the principal during my rant, that I felt that it was madly inappropriate for my daughter to be humiliated in front of other students and if there was concern about her meeting the dress code there was a more tactful way vs. a public shaming,” she wrote.

“While Reese was changing, her Principal, Mr. Cumberback started to explain to me that it was necessary to closely monitor the girls attire because boys at this age get very distracted by the girls and their appearance. So in order to control this, they needed to make sure the skirts were long enough etc. WTH?! This is the exact problem with society today. SO MY DAUGHTER WAS EMBARRASSED, HUMILIATED IN FRONT OF HER PEERS AND MADE TO FEEL LIKE A BAD GIRL BECAUSE BOYS CAN’T CONTROL THEIR DIRTY THOUGHTS!?” Suzie said. “I have to say he didn’t get to finish his entire argument because I asked him to please stop talking and told him the above. Even after I said that to him he still felt the need to explain to Reese how inappropriate boys’ thoughts are. She kindly said she understood because she had problems with boys at her elementary school (sad but true).”

Despite all the ridiculousness, Suzie said that she was very proud of how Reese kept it together throughout the whole ordeal. But she said that, understandably, both her and her daughter were disappointed.

“I understand there has to be a line, but shouldn’t the emphasis be on teaching our sons to be gentlemen and focus on their school work, not how much skin our daughters are showing? It really is hard enough to raise girls to have positive self esteem and a good body image without worrying that they are being shamed by their teachers and administrators,” she said. “Everyone has different body shapes and it is sad to think that girls who may be more developed are called out because of how they look in their clothes, this is just plain wrong.”

So far, the school has yet to comment on the matter.
