I'm gonna say this once. If you like, defend or "stan" John Walker, unfollow me please n thx ✌
Hi, I have a question- he was redeemed at the end, right? Why bad?
Hey! He wasn’t necessarily “redeemed” at the end, especially from everything he’s done in the series.
The thing about John Walker isn’t just the character himself being bad, but the ideals that he represents. For a lot of people, especially poc, John represents America as it currently is. He represents white supremacy, police brutality, racism and everything that’s wrong with our country.
He murdered a surrendering man in broad daylight, in front of a crowd and showed no remorse whatsoever, then also got off with what could be considered a slap on the wrist - Metaphor for police brutality.
He was given the shield simply because he was a blonde hair blue eyed man in the military, not because he held the same ideals or morals as Steve rogers. He was given that shield over a black man that Steve Rogers himself chose and saw no issue with it. -Metaphor for white privilege and white supremacy.
While you can argue that he has a “black friend” and black wife, it’s very clear that he doesn’t see Lamar as his equal, but as his sidekick, unlike how Steve worked with Sam or how Bucky and Sam work together. He calls to him in episode two to translate for him as if he’s in charge, no hint of appreciation to his tone. It seems to be implied that he took that serum with Lamar knowing, which is odd for someone you consider your brother or partner.
He is constantly demeaning Sam, especially around Bucky. You could say this is down to Bucky being a super soldier and Sam not having the serum- But John clearly holds himself above Sam even before he himself has the serum, as seen in episode 4 when he literally threatens to fight him. Sam has fought Hydra, aliens, other heroes and has gone up against Bucky himself. He is more than capable and there’s no reason for John to dismiss him the way he does. -Racism
There’s a lot more I could say, but that’s the basis! For me and others, the “redemption” in the last episode really doesn’t justify all that he’s done and represented. He’s just going to constantly leave a bad taste in my mouth, not to mention he never actually apologizes or shows remorse for his actions in the past. He just tries to save a truck and stops running after Karli, which is kind of the barest of minimums. I think John is a great example of how a white man can do the least and get away with the most.
Another point is the rising trend in stans advocating for Walker to be “the new cap” when Sam Wilson is right there. You can appreciate the artistic take and writing of this character, just as people like Thanos, Vulture or Bane. However to glorify him feels like an erasure of Sam, and there is something that makes me feel very sad about the fact people are more willing to take a morally corrupt albeit white, blue eyed, blonde man rather than a genuinely courageous and black captain America. A lot of these stans are practically begging for him to be the new captain america, but what this is implying is that Sam is not “good enough” for the shield, and that they are too ignorant and biased to even try and connect to a hero who is not the default white male hero. In short, though perhaps not intentional, what is being said here is that they are not willing to accept a black captain america.
This quick willingness to forgive and even elevate and platform someone like John is an issue I have with people in general. I believe all to an extent are capable of redemption and rehabilitation, but awarding people for doing the bare minimum is not right. This only perpetuates the idea that poc have to work twice as hard to prove themselves or even be seen on the same level as a white person.
Finally this narrative of John wielding the shield is a blatant misrepresentation of the Captain America story. Captain America was written as a rejection of the current world division - written by Jewish writers who portrayed an Aryan man rejecting fascist ideals and hatred. Captain America rejects what society is pushing. Despite his privilege in a world that favours him - he still fights against it. Sam Wilson wielding the shield is poetic in that this time he subverts the expectation by being black - and he still fights for the world even if it doesn’t protect him. Steve Rogers has spent his entire trilogy learning how to operate in a grey, complicated world and still manage to do the right thing. John Walker worships mandate and order - even when it is wrong.
I'm gonna say this once. If you like, defend or "stan" John Walker, unfollow me please n thx ✌
there's just something about the way people were so willing to forgive john walker after episode 6 you know
it's almost as though powerful white men can do literally anything and as long as they do the absolute bare minimum in recompense, it doesn't matter if they face no consequences
so sam has wings which makes like angel imagery easier obviously but the lengths they went through in ep 6 to really amplify and highlight this was incredible. like so many of his scenes were so beautiful and ethereal, and god did i love it. like i dont know why i connected so much to this but seeing him that way was really satisfying and impactful
Seb and Anthony’s friendship is truly the best thing to come out of the entirety of the MCU
wtf someone replied on another post that bucky showed up to the cookout in sam’s car and i didn’t believe it but i rewatched ep 1 and 6 and…. (edit: it was @margarethx who pointed this out in the replies of another post)
so now i’m trying to figure out why:
logistically, it makes no sense for bucky to show up alone in sam’s car. it would mean he was already at sam’s house before showing up to the cookout
imagine bucky showing up to sam’s family home and sam asking what food bucky brought. whatever it was initially was so fucking heinous that sam gave bucky the keys to the truck and made him go to the store as a last resort, and a store-bought oreo cake was considered an improvement to whatever he initially brought 💀 💀 💀
Speeder Peter
Imagine yourself as Mayfeld, this guy comes and wrecks your shit like the actual terminator then 6 months later he comes back and recruits you to watch him have an mental break down
Can you imagine him murmuring lullaby with that metallic voice? Because I can’t stop thinking about it…
look you can have issues with tfatws’ storytelling or pacing or whatever and be critical of it but it’s another thing to call a black man’s heartfelt 4 minute speech “long” or “dragging the pace” or “unnecessary” or “masturbatory” and call the amazement of everyday citizens seeing somebody who looks like them take a stand “cheesy” and “laughable”. this is not criticism, this is microagression at very best if not downright racism.
