Chapter 1: Ami

Ami approached the village gates, the tall wooden structure looming over her like a warning. As she got closer, her heart began racing and she could feel the hair standing on the back of her neck. Someone’s seen her. Ami had barely squared her position when she heard his voice just over her left shoulder, breath hot against her ear.

“You know, most people who come to attack the village don’t actually use the entrance.”

Ami’s heart stops. But instinct takes over and in a blink she’s behind him, kunai at his throat. “Long time no see, Kakashi.” This close, she could smell the citrus scent of his hair gel and the worn leather of his vest. Ami swallowed hard, trying to regain her composure but it was too late. Kakashi, sensing an opening, quickly overtook her and forced the knife against her chest.

His voice was softer as he said, “If we’re done with the pleasantries, I have a book I’d like to finish.” He had his head slightly cocked to the side, eyes squinting. He was smiling, though it was hard to tell with most of his face covered by that annoying mask. Relaxing his grip on her wrist, Ami slowly lowered the knife and placed it back in its sheath on her thigh. She was smiling too.
