there's a lot of talk about reading comprehension and one thing i think is the biggest barrier to people on this site getting better at it is simply... rushing. rushing to share something you haven't understood, rushing to have an opinion without taking the time to think about it, rushing to declare that you don't understand something
take these tags, on somebody else's post (condolences pip)
the thing is. this is what i would call an inside thought. nobody would have known you didn't get it if you didn't tell them that. if you recognised that it was important but didn't have the headspace to process it, you can reblog without commentary for others, or to come back to later. or you can save it somewhere and wait until you DO have the capacity to read it over a few more times, ponder it, consider what it might mean, figure out how to understand it, and THEN reblog it
but no. rushing to reblog while it is still opaque. rushing to admit to ignorance rather than spend the time to achieve understanding. perhaps hoping that somebody will break it down for you more simply, though to my mind it was quite simply phrased in the first place. never stopping to take the time first
comprehension is not always instant! sometimes it takes a bit of time for something to percolate after you read it; sometimes you need to read it a few times; sometimes you realise you don't have the context for it and either go and get the context or accept that it's not for you right now
please just simply slow down. you don't always have to respond to everything within a second or two. it is okay if it is not an instantaneous understanding. we all need to get more comfortable with thinking more slowly and more deeply and more carefully, and not letting our instant split second responses drive us all the time, because they are a barrier to genuine reflection
Tolkien Horror Week is back for another year of celebrating all the terrifying and unsettling bits of Tolkien's work! The event will run from October 25–31 and accepts all types of fanworks. There is an AO3 collection for the event here.
Below are some suggested prompts for each day of the week. They are not mandatory; feel free to combine them or disregard them entirely.
Day 1: Angband, Utumno, and Tol-in-Gaurhoth | older and fouler things | made and unmade Day 2: Angmar, Minas Morgul, and Númenor | like shades of night | devoted and damned Day 3: Mordor and the Dead Marshes | a dark cloud of fear | dead and undead Day 4: The Barrow-downs and the Old Forest | out of the mist | awake and asleep Day 5: Mirkwood, Nan Elmoth, and Taur-nu-Fuin | the depths of the wood | hunter and hunted Day 6: Nan Dungortheb, Ered Gorgoroth, and the Girdle of Melian | weaving webs of shadow | light and unlight Day 7: Isengard, Moria, and the Paths of the Dead | the deep places of the world | sworn and forsaken
Please mention @tolkienhorrorweek in the body of your post and tag #tolkienhorrorweek and #tolkienhorrorweek2026 in the first 10 tags. You may also submit a post. Please tag any content warnings/gore and place any NSFW content beneath a read more/link to AO3.
For more information, see the FAQ. If you have any questions, drop them in the ask box.

HAVE YOU HEARD OF JIMOTHY AND WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSIONAL OPINION?
I’ve got a full length video about Jimothy if you search on my blog.
That being said, I wanna take a little more of a philosophical approach here.
Apparently Jimothy was born in 2025, so he’s about a year old. And I got a lot of questions in the comment section of my video on TikTok asking why his mama/siblings didn’t eat him or shun him and leave him to die.
And it’s because that isn’t how raccoons work. Jimothy has survived thus far because raccoon families are built on love and support and knowledge exchange.
People always say “raccoons are solitary creatures.” But they aren’t. Not really. Males use each other to stay warm in the winter (and keep each other entertained.) Females form close bonds with their children. Siblings teach each other new skills and games. In captivity, raccoons make their own family. For example, my own raccoons, Lammy and Moonshine, perfectly mimick the relationship between a daughter that should have left the nest by now, and a fed up mother that still loves her. Raccoons are so successful as a species because their families (blood related or otherwise) lift each other up. They share their knowledge with the ones they love and offer help when needed.
and ACCEPT help when needed.
Wink wink. Nudge nudge.
Howl?? From Howl’s Moving Castle??
idk anything about this but I love it
I've seen so many posts lately like "trans men have got to get more feminine" and it's lowkey pissing me off because we haven't even normalized trans men being masculine yet. Have you not been paying attention to trans men when they talk about being kicked out of LGBT spaces for "appearing too cishet" like can we lock in and understand that sexuality and oftentimes gender aren't something you can visually tell before we start trying to normalize something that's already normalized
if you can’t handle me at my worst (anxiety tics and trembles and meltdowns) you don’t deserve me at my best (autistic whimsy manic pixie dream girl)
sleep is not normal to want and impossible to achieve
Annatar had the best reference for the image of a noble elf who can definitely be trusted with anything
The irony of this new breed of self-righteous AI hunters on AO3 is that they're all just copy and pasting peoples fics into AI detectors, which are all operated by AI and therefore THEY are feeding people's work into the algorithm without their consent and in some cases no doubt circumventing the locks people put on to avoid getting scraped...
Don't copy and paste anyone's AO3 work into third party websites, you're not the good guys in this situation?
Reblog cause FACTS
So long and goodnight. x
practicing self care less out of self love and more for the sheer logical reasoning of it’d be kinda stupid of me to expect myself to be able to function without proper maintenance
“oh i don’t deserve rest and relaxation, i haven’t done enough, i haven’t earned it” and my car’s breaks don’t deserve break fluid because they aren’t breaking well enough to earn it. that’s what you sound like!!!!!
They made their bathroom look like you're in a pool. Clever.
can’t talk right now. im partaking in the social ritual of correct micro facial expressions
right so apparently its also weird if you do the correct micro facial expressions but then dont talk
