1912 hosted Alaska’s warmest winter as of that date. But scientists blamed the change in temperature on earthquakes off of Japan rather than on human-influenced global warming. This was before global warming, or climate change, was a scientific given.

Chang and Eng inspired the name Siamese Twins, as they were born in Siam in 1811 and shared an infused liver. A Scottish traveler enslaved the twins by purchasing them from their mother, only to display them on a “world tour.” They gained their freedom in later life, only to purchase slaves of their own and live the rest of their life on a plantation in North Carolina. They died in 1874.
