I have somehow managed to enter into a friendly but tense hostess dilemma with my friend Erick. This all started when he cleaned my kitchen while my fiance and I were out of town. Erick was cat sitting and when we returned from our trip, my kitchen was suspiciously clean, and Erick just said "Isn't it nice to return home from a trip and things are cleaner than you remember".
We weren't even paying him to watch the cat. He does it because he likes to hang out with her. So not only was he already doing us a solid, but then he went and cleaned my kitchen. Unbelievable.
That was in September. Fast forward to this week.
I decided to have a couple friends over for Christmas Lasagna Dinner, including Erick. I said if people wanted to bring stuff that would be nice, but that we would have pie, lasagna and wine. Erick RSVPs yes and says he might bring another pie, which is of course fine. There's going to be 8 people we can have more than one pie. Today, Christmas Eve, he calls me around 12 and asks if he can ASSEMBLE A TIRAMISU IN MY KITCHEN. I asked "what happened to the pie lol" and he said he had been working on it and the BAKED MAC AND CHEESE ALL MORNING.
So now I am in danger of having my hardware store pie (they sell good pies in a freezer by the checkout) and two lasagnas upstaged by his baked Mac and cheese, pie, and tiramisu. I feel like I'm in a "Dear Abby..." letter
vampire hunter? no i said vampire HAUNTER. this jerk sucked all my blood out so now i spend my afterlife knocking over shelves and scaring off potential victims and just making the castle generally pretty cold
it's always 'bleh why are the plates floating', 'gah who knocked over my blood goblet' and never 'sorry for killing you' ok starve then!
and what are you going to do about it? have a priest exorcise the place? yeah good luck with all the crosses and holy water you piece of shit
It’s a lovely morning in the gothic castle, and you are a horrible ghost.
You are not that powerful of a villain but you rank high on the wanted list because you don't give prep time and you dont talk too much
You can cure any ailment, but you have to rip off a toenail to do so. It took you a few years of hobbling before you realized they didn't have to be your toenails.
You, the chosen one, walk into the evil queen's throne room. The queen was sitting gloomily on her throne. She sees you and lightens up. She rises from her throne and kisses you. "Sweetheart, I am so glad you are back."
"Of course," you say, as if it is the most natural thing in the world. Her demeanor shifts-- she could tell something is on your mind.
She tips your chin, and you return her gaze with a heavy heart.
"What's wrong, darling?"
"I..." Tears prick your eyes at the idea of anything happening to your beloved. Instead, you draw her close, and kiss her passionately.
A moment of protest, but she melts, her arms wrapped around you languidly.
"If only the rest of the world could disappear," she whispers.
"I want to destroy them," you hiss back. "I want to destroy them all."
She recoils at your ferocity. You try for another kiss, but she holds up her hand.
"Tell me what happened," she says.
You struggle to meet her gaze.
"I was stopped on the way here," you explain. "Do you... Do you know what they call you out there?"
The queen laughs mirthlessly. "They've been saying that since I was born," she says. "Because of my lineage, because of who I love. It is what it is."
"You don't understand." You grab her hand and draw it to your chest. You try to gather the courage to tell her.
She's patient. So patient.
"They called me the chosen one. They said I... I will bring about your end."
She stares.
Laughs. Delighted.
"Oh, you bring about my end every day," she says pleasurably. "Every time you leave."
She nuzzles your chin. "Don't make me share attentions with the hateful and small-minded. They are hardly worth our time."
You kiss her head and breath in her scent.
You try to forget the words they spoke to you.
Three days.
In three days, you will bring about her undoing. You are the Chosen One.
You could hardly imagine a world without her. Much less, you couldn't imagine a world you wouldn't tear apart for her.
Especially a world that calls her the "Evil Queen".
Your hands meet and intertwine.
"I love you," she whispers.
You vow to crush her enemies.
Even if it kills you.
Which one of these insults is best?
You have all the natural charm of a snot-covered tissue
You're so stingy, you wouldn't even give someone a cold
Your logic has more holes than a pair of worn socks
If anybody accused you of intelligence or kindness, I would jump to defend you
Calling you a clown insults clowns
If you were any more of a rat, you'd have whiskers
Whoever raised you owes the world an apology
One of the most effective things that I've found for writing when you're stuck where you are is to write whatever scene you have in your head. Write the end. Write that one random scene that may not end up in the book at all. Write the fluff, the angst, the half-formed thought.
The advantage of doing this is that it will get you back in the story itself and get your head with the characters and the world, while also reminding you that you can write that story.
Sometimes you can end up in a rut that feels insurmountable because you can't get the next 100 words. Getting your head out of those next 100 words and into the story as a whole can really help.
This this this. Write what you want. Going back and filling in the gaps will be much easier once you know where you're going.
Prompt 16 - Hot Chocolate
“Do you have any hot cocoa? It’s freezing outside.” Villain rummaged through Hero’s cupboards.
“There’s hot chocolate powder in the cupboard closest to the fridge.”
“How do you turn on your stove?”
“Just microwave a cup of water.”
“Microwave? I didn’t know you had such terrible taste,” Villain said, affronted.
Hero cracked an eye open, but they couldn’t see Villain from their current position. “What’s the difference? It’s just hot water.”
“That’s another thing. You make hot cocoa with water?”
“Yeah, so?”
“It’s so much better with milk!”
Leave it to Villain to pick fights over the smallest and strangest things. “Milk is easier to burn and more expensive than water.”
“But it tastes better!”
“It tastes perfectly fine either way.”
“You sound so boring!”
“And you sound childish.”
“See, this is why we can’t be together!”
“It’s not because you’re a villain and I’m a hero?”
“No! It’s because you insist on settling for subpar satisfaction when there’s better options available to you! You can’t let yourself truly enjoy anything because you feel guilty every moment you’re not suffering!”
Hero stared at Villain, speechless. How were they supposed to respond to that? How did the argument go from hot chocolate preferences to Hero’s guilt complex?
“Woah, that got a bit heavy,” Villain said. “We really need to talk about your mental health, but that’s a conversation for another time. What I’m trying to say is, you should indulge yourself every once and a while.” They shoved a mug into Hero’s hands. “Here, just try it.”
Hero didn’t want to admit Villain had a point, but it did taste pretty good. “How about I compromise by microwaving the water until it’s boiling, then adding milk to it?”
“Fine, but you’re on thin ice.”
In fairy tales and fantasy, two types of people go in towers: princesses and wizards.
Princesses are placed there against their will or with the intention of ‘keeping them safe.’ This is very different from wizards, who seek out towers to hone their sorcery in solitude.
I would like a story where a princess is placed in an abandoned tower that used to belong to a wizard, and so she spends long years learning the craft of wizardry from the scraps left behind and becomes the most powerful magic wielder the world has seen in centuries, busts out of the tower and wreaks glorious, bloody vengeance on the fools that imprisoned her.
That would be my kind of story.
When Princess Talia was fourteen, her eldest sister was placed in a tower.
Princess Adina was eighteen by then, and so of a marriageable age. She had grown quite beautiful, though she was more willful than winsome, and she did not care for the notion of the tower very much at all. Their mother did her best to persuade her on the subject. After all, the queen herself had been eighteen when her own parents had sent her to live in that very same tower, to be safely tucked away until her husband could be chosen, and then ride out to claim her. A tradition going back ages and ages.
