âȘ Hurt myself again today, and the worst part is there's no one else to blame.
Holden was an only child eagerly waiting for the day he would become a responsible older brother, but his heart was broken with the passing of his mother and sister-to-be. He hated his stepmother and her two sons from the moment he met them, even more so after they moved in and relocated him to the basement to accommodate for his new brothers. Though Holden tried to fight for his old room back, he was no match for his younger and older brother. He hated the basement at first, but son found his new room a great place to shut himself away from the outside world, and his sadistic stepmother who enjoyed spanking and whipping in the name of discipline.
Holden grew up with barely any interaction with people his own age. When he wasnât holed up in his dark basement room, he was either at school or at the morgue where his father worked. He was quite fascinated with his fatherâs embalming work: so many bodies that came in, and so many ways to die. Sometimes, he even attended his fatherâs grief counseling meetings for his higher-end clients, just for fun. It was interesting, to say the least, to watch people get so worked up over something as inevitable as death. Holdenâs father was the only person whose company he truly enjoyed; the rest of his family only rolled around in his fatherâs wealth and boasted about everything great that happened to them. His brothers were probably the ones he hated most: arrogant and loud-mouthed, they deserved absolutely none of the attention and popularity that constantly surrounded them. When he wasnât with his father or roaming the streets on his own, Holden could be found in his dark basement room, watching horror movies, reading Stephen King novels, and clipping pictures and articles of the latest deaths to decorate his wall.
A couple of months before the end of his freshman year, Holdenâs stepmother suddenly relocated to Oregon, while Holdenâs father stayed behind to finish some business. Holden and his stepmother earned the utmost respect from the teachers and from the Dean of Mount Olympus High, who turned his stepbrothers away but allowed Holden to pass his freshman year without any issues. Despite having been there for only a short while, Holden already found himself the topic of many âsociopathâ rumors⊠but he couldnât care less about them â or anyone else, for that matter.
â They circle in the heaven, and are there for thee to behold â
[ALOOF] â Emotional detachment is Holdenâs forte, partly because of all his exposure to the dead and the mourning, but also partly because itâs just in his nature. He distances himself from his emotions and doesnât like revealing weakness to anybody, in case they use those weaknesses against him. Even if deep down, he feels ecstatic, or miserable, or enraged, or anything else, he doesnât like to show it much, and so itâs anybodyâs guess what heâs thinking, or what heâs going to say next.
[SULLEN] â Holden is very susceptible to envy, having lost a sister heâd never met, as well as growing up with two obnoxious stepbrothers who seemed to have it all going for them. They were witty and sociable, drawing attention to them wherever they walked, traits which Holden secretly longed for himself. He just wasnât like them, however, outsider that he was, and he absolutely resented them. His sulking usually carries into school too, and he finds himself hating everyone else in his class who is happier, smarter, or more popular â which would be practically everyone, even the teachers.
[HUMORLESS] â Often nicknamed the âDebbie Downerâ by those who whisper behind his back, Holden is known to have a very dark sense of humor â if he ever shows any sense of humor at all. He can smile at the most morbid things, or when everything is dark and gloomy and thereâs nothing to smile at, but in the face of happy, bright comedy, his face remains stoic. Is he really as dry and dark as he seems, or is this all an act? No one could ever find out.
