man, I have very little sympathy for people who’re like “I gotta let them play in traffic, my cat WAILS and acts MISERABLE unless I let them outside!”

because like……….so does mine? at a certain point each day Grim decides she wants out, and until that happens she a) follows me about SCREAMING, and b) sits atop whatever I’m doing and bites my hands. this is not an exageration

wanna know what I do? I take her out. either supervised in my backyard or on leash in the front

she naps in the sunlight, eats copious amounts of grass, rolls in dirt, and murders butterflies. after 15-30 minutes (equivalent to the time you’d spend on a neighbourhood dog walk) I take Grim back in, and she happily sleeps/plays/cuddles indoors for the remainder of the day

harness training isn’t hard!!! your kitty will flop the first few times you put it on, but if you start by putting it on INSIDE and then give them lots of treats & fun distractions, they’ll get used to it!

here’s my two kitties when they were young and getting harness acclimated :)

after you’ve done this a few times and they’re used to it, you can take them out. the walk part is super easy, too! walking a cat isn’t like walking a dog – most cats just like to sniff. they’ll wander around a bit, investigate some things, lay down in the grass. it’s a nice peaceful moment, a good chance to maybe bring a book outside and chill if youve got a long enough leash!

there are other options for enrichment if your cats hate harnesses – ghost is anxious about being outside and will often bolt, so instead i bring him in things to sniff as enrichment!

my baby mochi LOVES her walks.

her and ghost were born in a feral colony that was spawned from outdoor farm cats. more than half of the population there had FIV - feline immunovirus - and were starving or wasting away. mochi and her brother ghost nearly died as baby kittens from serious respiratory infections, which mochi still has complications from. there were frequent injuries and even deaths from dog and human attacks, too.

a friend of mine was making the effort to neuter the population and adopt out those who were young enough, but most of them were too feral to be inside cats. six months after we rescued mochi and ghost from the colony, a single coyote came through and killed all but one of them.

mochi and ghost are safe and inside, where they won’t die of horrible wasting viruses or get killed by dogs, or kill all of my bird friends. please keep your cat inside.

People, for the most part, want to work.

UBI would allow us to expand the definition of “work.” If somebody can live off of UBI, then they can devote themselves to things which we don’t currently value financially such as the arts, raising children well, etc.

And if somebody wants to stay home and play video games all day…then so be it. Not that many will.,..and of those who do most will probably find some way to make that into their “work,” whether by providing play throughs and tutorials or competing seriously.

If somebody stops working all together as soon as they get UBI and stays home to play video games, they probably desperately needed a break.

There are so many people who are struggling with mental and physical illnesses, and chronic pain, who are still breaking themselves working because they don’t have another option - because it can take years to get on disability, and it’s not enough to survive on, so people keep going as long as they possibly can.

Even if it’s not a matter of disability, as such … people get burned out?

We’re not really built to do school and work with minimal breaks to the extent that we do.

Despite what our puritanical culture says, there’s no shame in needing a break.

It always strikes me as funny that people who bitch about a “nanny state” are the same people who want to strip people of as much autonomy as possible because they don’t trust them to make their own decisions.

If you don’t want to give money to homeless people because they’ll spend it wrong, don’t want UBI because people will spend their time wrong, don’t want parental leave or parental support because you think people will start reproducing wrong, you’re the one trying to play nanny here. (And, speaking as a professional nanny, you’d get fired within a week trying to pull that kind of punitive micromanagement bullshit as an actual nanny.)

Come one, come all, and see the worlds most cursed person on the planet! That’s me trying to make light of this situation so an update for those who’ve seen my previous post, and apologies for not updating sooner.

I was administered to the hospital after passing out at work about a week ago. Apparently an issue with my iron and blood sugar was very low. Could be part of my mediations but have a follow up in a few days to have testing done. After being sent home, I had a sore throat the following day and the day after I wound up with awful tonsillitis, a sinus infection, and an ear infection. I was having issues breathing and was aspirating a ton trying to sleep, so they prescribed me antibiotics, a steroid and a breathing treatment/inhaler. Well… it just kept getting worse. I started getting profusely sick out of nowhere and couldnt keep food/water/my medication down, and nausea was so bad I was up two nights straight. My friend stopped by to check on me and insisted I go back to the hospital. First they gave me zofran for the nausea (what they give chemo patients) and they had to up me to ciproflaxin (used to treat anthrax because of how strong the antibiotic is) instead of my old one. After 5 days on it, I FINALLY feel better, and today is my first day back at work!

Cherry on top? First time I got profusely sick, while running to the toilet I wound up somehow dropping/chucking my phone and the screen broke and went black entirely. Thankfully I have a work phone and finally got corporate to allow me to download tumblr on here and FINALLY able to update. So with all of that said I cannot WAIT for this year to be over (come on burning goat, burn away all the evil bs for a smoother 2022, yuck).

Lastly, I’m sure many of you know, but my mom and dad died and I have no remaining family. I know it’s so close to Christmas so a lot of you are probably strapped, but if there’s any way you could reblog this or donate even a small amount it all adds up. I desperately need to fix my phone screen as I need that phone to verify myself at work for each application. I also missed 9 days of work so my check is going to be awful. I also will need help with either rent or heart medication and/or my phone bill. before I get paid again since this next check is going to be awful and only have a day and a half on it.

I need a shower chair that doesn't hurt me.

For the past couple of months I have been struggling harder than usual to take showers due to the fact that every time I take a shower I have to deal with pain from having to jam my legs into the bathtub. This bathtub is smaller than the one in the last place and so bottom line I need a taller shower chair so I can take showers and not have to deal with this new pain. I’m reading a lot of baffled responses to this. People, I’m showrunning and co-writing the Good Omens TV series. I can’t legally read unsolicited plot ideas. Think of Netflix. Their terms of service include

8.2. Unsolicited Materials. Netflix does not accept unsolicited materials or ideas for Netflix content and is not responsible for the similarity of any of its content or programming in any media to materials or ideas transmitted to Netflix.

…and you’ll find similar clauses out there for other production entities. They are trying to safeguard themselves. There are people out there who are certain that a hit film or TV series is based on their stolen idea. The easiest way to avoid that is to make sure that their ideas can’t get to you.

It’s nothing to do with not approving of what you do. It’s about not putting me, the producers, the BBC or Prime Video at risk — or about having to throw away plans for the future because someone did that in fanfiction first. I can’t legally read unsolicited scripts or story proposals or manuscripts and sending me a link to your or someone else’s Good Omens fiction counts as those things. If I read your story and then did something close to it you could sue. So I’m not going to read it. There’s no emotional baggage in this. I’m definitely not telling you that what you are doing isn’t valid. (And If I wasn’t showrunning I wouldn’t be so Please Don’t and I Will Delete about it. But I am. So don’t. Thank you!)

Reminder that "By Any Means Necessary," one of the best episodes of Babylon 5, nearly didn't get made because some fan suggested a similar idea (a workers' strike on the space station, dealing with workers' safety and labor issues at a time when Star Trek: TNG was still on the air).

I can't remember how far along the episode was in production — I think a rough draft of the script had been written —but showrunner J. Michael Straczynski had to pull the plug on the episode until they finally tracked down the fan who'd suggested a "workers' strike" story on Usenet and get legal documents signed that the fan wouldn't sue or ask for a cut of the proceeds. AND the documents had to be watertight enough that Warner Bros' legal dept was satisfied all financial/legal risk had been eliminated. In other words, it wasn't up to JMS to make the call.

Sadly, after that, he could no longer participate in the old Babylon 5 Usenet discussion list, where he used to interact directly with fans, answering questions. It was just safer if he stayed away, because that way nobody could accuse him of lifting ideas for the show. We don't want Neil to have to pull back for the same reason.

A lot of creators avoid social media for the same reason. Those that are here @neil-gaiman , @dduane , have a hard and fast rule not to look at unasked solicitations.

And now that Babylon 5 might get a reboot, JMS has issued a similar request:

My bank account is $250 overdrawn, and the next month's bills are about to start rolling in, just in time for the various holidays, I need to get an oil change and a new tire, and I'm just so so tired. I'm still in recovery mode from everything last week, and I'm trying to get my shit sorted, but this is just making everything harder. I still have 3 months before I hear back from SSA about my disability application... 😔

I wasn’t expecting this to get notes -- it was mostly just venting -- but if anyone can help, here’s the breakdown:

- Bank account is (currently) $250 overdrawn. (thank you, November’s insurance)

- Car payment is $400 on 12/12.

- $200 in smaller misc bills.

- Car insurance is $200 on 12/23.

- Oil change for the car is $30, and a new tire (our front left one has a nail in it, and we used fix-a-flat on it like 2 months ago and have been running on prayers and good luck) will run us about $75 if we do the installation ourselves, which we can.

- I’m going to need to get my meds refilled soon, which will cost $60. (Thankfully, that’s for 3 months worth, so that’s not as awful.)

In total, to get all of this taken care of, I need $1,215.

It’s the holiday season, and I don’t expect or want people who cannot afford to help to do so. But if you can and you’re willing to, every cent really helps a household of 4 disabled queers get through another month. (Not to mention, everything to do with the car also helps our 2 young foundlings who rely on us for rides to work & errands.)
