A quick postivity post
I love you transmascs/trans men who havent medically transistioned yet. Whether its because you just dont want to, dont have access to horomones, or arent out yet. You are still valid, and if you want to transition in the future I hope you can! And if you don't want to, more power to you.
various people about trans men: I hate you. because i hate men of course. there is a heavy overarching implication in my behavior that I would not treat you with this level of cruelty and scrutiny if you were a cis woman, but shouldn't you feel so validated right now? shouldn't you feel validated that I wouldn't treat you like shit if you hadn't transitioned? shouldn't you feel validated that I'm treating you like shit explicitly because of your identity?

Both Transandrophobia And Transmisogyny Exist
also to add
Also Exorsexism And Intersexism Too
It's really fucking condescending to approach a transmasculine person talking about their oppression and assume they have no understanding of transfeminism. Its infantilizing, its often dancing between misogynistic and malgendering, and its almost always hypocritical as hell.
If you police the discussions of analysis that tmasc people use with "you're wrong, you clearly need to read (transfeminist text)" maybe reflect on if that text you are citing is one specifically written by or about transmasculine people, or includes any collaboration or input from tmascs at all. Which is like. Pretty much never the situation I encounter.
It's like, cool. I'm not saying that your source from a transfeminine activist/author creating a work about transmisogyny isn't an important contribution to transfeminism, or holding incredibly valuable insights (I mean these are often works I think everyone should read)- but consider that if these works specifically do not center or involve transmasculine people... why are you wielding it as the rule book to define how a discussion on transmasculinity should be held?
Why is it that tmascs need to defer the language they use to communicate their experiences to those who are not them or making any genuine effort to cite, collaborate, or include them?
Why is it automatically wrong to challenge the conclusions those kinds of texts declare about us? Is it that tmascs refuse to accept the conclusions of a work which never sought to sincerely involve them just out of ignorance or pride- or could it be because those conclusions might actually be very limited and inaccurate- no matter the quality of other aspects of the work?
And like. Importantly here.
....Transmasculine people have made contributions to transfeminist materials, you know?
Yes we are underrepresented in transfeminist texts but are we are absolutely there, currently and historically. Our underrepresentation isn't some lack of care we have either, it's quite obviously yet another byproduct of our erasure in society. We are underrepresented in many spaces of career and academia both because of the systemic barriers that exclude and prevent us from entering, and from the fact that our contributions go undervalued and unacknowledged. It is absolutely not unusual to see the curriculum of gender studies classes completely exclude texts made by transgender men and transmasculine people. But they do exist.
Maybe these discussions and ideas of transmasculine theory are so new and shocking to you because you've never taken the time to flesh out your understanding of transgender oppression beyond a handful of transfeminine authors who did not author their works with transmasculine people in mind nor in partnership?
Again. This is not saying these aren't important works, but it should not be so controversial to state they just are not always going to be entirely applicable as the framework through which all other approaches to transfeminism must orbit. Nor is it that are they flawless objects that should not be criticized. Examining the successes and the failures of a text is essential critical analysis & media literacy. Especially in areas of theory.
To treat these works as universal representatives of transgender experience and incapable of having limitations or blind spots is foolish. It is standard practice to go to directly to marginalized people themselves to understand their perspectives and lives, not others. Transmasculine people are not the exception to that.
It just is incredibly telling that the texts consistently quoted at transmasc people to talk down to us about how we need to be properly educated on our place in transfeminism are never texts from transmasculine people themselves. It is self explanatory how you've reached the conclusion it is acceptable to demand transmasculine voices be decentered when you've built an understanding of us from texts which do not make the effort to involve us, but will still try to speak concretely about and for us.
You just sometimes encounter such prideful complicity in total ignorance to tmasc lives which will even myopically promote there are no transmasc texts in transfeminist academia in the first place.
So idk. But just maybe. Don't turn around and act like maybe we just aren't as well read as you are
Dr. Alan Hart, a trans man from the USA who pioneered the use of X-ray photography in tuberculosis detection (saving countless lives according to researchers), was "reclaimed" by the lesbian community after his death in 1962, which means he was deadnamed and described as "a women loving woman who had to transition because at the time transsexualism was a quick medicine against sexism and homophobia" by numerous gay and lesbian associations and activists (including Jonathan Ned Katz whom I just quoted and who received many awards for his contributions to... I don't know, transphobia against trans men I guess), even though his widow always expressed how offensive it was to both her and her husband to refer to them as lesbians.
Hart was on testosterone, legally changed his name, and had gotten a hysterectomy (that was described as "unfortunate" by the Right to Privacy gay and lesbian political action committee), making him the first documented trans man to transition in the USA, yet he was characterized as a lesbian woman because cis gays and lesbians had the nerve (when do they NOT have the nerve, dare I say) to think they had the right to "honor [his] life as a woman" by having fundraiser dinners with his deadname attached to them, having college lectures where they talked about him as a lesbian hero, and using she pronouns for him until 2000. The USAmerican trans community, including trans activist Lou Sullivan, had to fight to defend Hart's identity and to have his manhood recognized by the wider community by protesting these lectures and dinners and having a conversation with the Portland chapter of the Lesbian Avengers association, which ended up having a favorable response and joining the trans community in the battle.
I want to end this by reporting the words of Candice Hellen Brown, a trans woman from Portland who wrote a letter to Just Out magazine in 1994 defending Hart's transness:
The Right to Privacy Political Action Committee in Oregon has a big fundraiser every year that is called the [deadname] Hart Dinner. When asked if I am going, I indignantly answer, "Not until they stop using the wrong name and gender for one of our heroes!" His name is Alan [. . .] He never wavered from his identity as a man, and upon his death, his widow continued to insist that he was a man. Why would such a straight man be called a lesbian by the gay community when today we would certainly call him a female-to-male transsexual? [. . .] He was transsexual or, at least, a transgenderist - a true pioneer. One who is seen as a hero by today's transsexual community. Please don't let him be taken away from us by allowing his old name to be used as though it were a badge of honor.
Think about this story every time the "trans men never contributed to anything in history" discourse resurfaces again. If this can happen to a famous historical figure from the USA and from a relatively recent time who medically transitioned and was explicitly out as a trans man, imagine how many others from other countries, historical periods, and situations have been erased or "reclaimed".
framing trans infighting on this website as “both sides” arguing about who has it worse is so disingenuous it’s actually infuriating. i have a blocklist literally thousands of blogs long and i still can’t go a single day on here without seeing someone go on and on about how privileged trans men are and how trans men are actually benefiting from the patriarchy and oppressing trans women. meanwhile, i can count on my fingers the number of times i’ve seen a trans man argue the opposite. the only people who DO consistently make that argument are cis TERFs, yet for some reason it’s being attributed to “transandrobros” instead.
the vast, VAST majority of people who talk about transandrophobia are in agreement that playing oppression olympics is fucking stupid and unhelpful, but nobody listens because they keep getting talked over and silenced and gaslit about their experiences.
if you want people to stop arguing about who has it worse you can help by defending and standing with the trans men and mascs who have been saying exactly that this entire fucking time. when you try to “both sides” the discourse you’re just contributing to the cycle of speaking over and erasing the experiences of trans men/mascs, because you’re refusing to engage with what the overwhelming majority have actually been saying in favor of giving legitimacy to the strawman of the “transandrobro” that has been invented for the exact purpose of fueling the discourse.
all love to "we need to hold transmascs accountable for their misogyny/transmisogyny" as in "everybody has the capacity to be misogynistic/transmisogynistic and a lot of misogynized people (including women) dont believe that they CAN be misogynistic/transmisogynistic, and it is important to hold ALL misogynists/transmisogynists accountable" but a lot of yall are just using it as a dogwhistle and what you really mean is "we need to make the trans community and wider society so inhospitable to transmascs that they either kill themselves or are forced to detransition" and "transmascs are more misogynistic/transmisogynistic than any other group on account of both their male privilege and their afab privilege and are an inherently unsafe group for both women and cis men. there is no ethical way to be transmasc and they should not exist as a group" which like, yeah obviously we're gonna have a problem with that
i feel the need to reiterate this
the study that concluded trans women on average make less than trans men only took into account full-time jobs, meaning it ignored data from trans people in part time jobs. trans men are more than *twice* as likely as trans women to have part-time jobs, which basically by definition pay less than full-time jobs. from this study (sample size 27,000+ usamerican transgender people) which does include part-time jobs, trans men [in the united states on average] make about 30% less than trans women, which is a PRETTY BIG NUMBER to fuck up on a reporting decision don'tcha think
The reduction of trans men to mere concepts
There's a chicken-and-egg scenario involved in transmasculinity these days:
Which came first, the violent erasure of transmasculine people from society and history, even trans society and history- or the reduction of transmascs to ideas instead of people?
Whichever happened first, they're both in an endless cycle right now. Trans men are erased and rendered hyperinvisible. Then, trans men are too invisible to speak up for themselves when they're erased further. As a result, no one listens to trans men when they try to speak for their actual experiences.
As a result, trans men are no longer a demographic with lived experiences and stories: they are ideas. They can be anything depending on the needs of the non-transmasculine speaker.
One example of this was touched on in this essay regarding the problematic portrayal of MPreg, where MPreg is celebrated not because it validates pregnant men as men, but because pregnancy is portrayed as something that inherently causes a man to become submissive (feminist), and it's doubly feminist when the one who impregnated him is a woman because that means a man submitted to a woman.
In particular, I want to draw attention to this paragraph:
And yes, I said the idea of a man in a feminine position is inherently feminist to them, NOT the man himself. The feminine position he is in makes him an object to be viewed and discussed, not a subject with thoughts and beliefs. The pregnant man is not a feminist, he's a feminist concept. That, I think, is the core of the problem with mpreg jokes - to people who make them, a pregnant man is an idea, a symbol, a fictional situation, instead of a real human being. They ignore the existance of actual men that can get pregnant in favour of the idea of them, because the first one has agency, and the second one has no agency (because he exists in their head). To people like that, pregnant men = blorbos jokingly impregnated by defying biology, or blorbos in omegaverse AUs, not the living, breathing trans and intersex men. They imagine pregnant men for many reasons: as a sexual fantasy, to make a joke, to declaw and tame them, but never to actually consider what it's like for real life men with uteruses. Pregnancy is just another situation they can put their blorbos in, not a real thing some men go through. So there's no space in their minds for the discrimination we face in gynecological and prenatal care, or the fear of being forcibly impregnated as a way to detransition us. Pregnant men are theoretical to them, just like catboys, so they get annoyed when we remind them that we exist and shoo us away claiming they're not talking about us.

While this quote is in the context of MPreg, I think it very much applies to wider discussions around transmasculinity. Detransitioning or "forcefemming" a trans man, for example, is very popular on this site, both as a sexual fetish/fantasy and as a genuine desire. And objections to this are met with, inevitably, the same protest that the world doesn't need more men, it needs more women, and further, masculinity is inevitably rewarded.
Transmasculine input stating otherwise is not welcomed, because this isn't about transmasculine people as people; it's about transmasculine people as concepts. And in this environment, it is a fact that the most feminist thing a concept of a transmasculine person can be is become a real, feminine person instead. His life would be of more worth as a miserable cis woman, because as a trans man, he is a mere concept.
Stating that one's masculinity has not been rewarded is not a feminist action, because it assigns agency to what is supposed to be a mere idea- the person "gifted" womanhood who threw it all away.
Trans men being concepts, not people, is also why trans men are never discussed as transgender men. They might be trans if they are facing an issue that harms the entire trans community (after all, this concept being attacked could lead to harm being done to REAL people!) but otherwise they are just men. And just men are, unless being put in their place via sexual humiliation (pregnancy, forcefem, pegging, etc) not feminist ideas, so the best thing for them would be to be rewritten as properly feminist concepts. So, there is no use in discussions about the ways in which transmasculine experiences diverge from cismasculine ones, because right now, the trans community online has little use for delineation of two interchangeable concepts. At least cis men have a chance on the order of a few percent of realizing their identity as women- real people- down the line.
It's seen as meaningless, and maybe even disingenuous, to draw a line between transmasculine and cismasculine experiences, because the difference between two flavors of not-women who have failed to be Feminist Concepts is meaningless.
Further, as mere concepts, transmasculine men are perfect targets for projection. Trans men can be "basically cis women" when it makes them look bad and less transfeminist; they can be mentally ill girls and theyfabs and cunts and bitches to undermine their identity. Remember, this is a feminist action, because humiliating a man, especially to a woman, is a good feminist concept. And when needed, trans men, being identical to cis men, are dangerous; they're threats, they're the ones committing the rapes and abuse and hate crimes against trans women, they're the ones passing (or wanting to pass) laws banning HRT for trans women (even though it's T, not E, that is currently a controlled substance). Because men are men, there is no use distinguishing between them, and the voice of trans men, as a mere concept and not a real people, is not welcome.
(In fact, one could also argue that trans women are being reduced to concepts in the opposite direction; it's just that because they are seen as properly feminist concepts, they are allowed to offer their own lived experiences, solely conditionally because it is of benefit at that time. A trans woman with a lived experience that contradicts a certain feminist point of view quickly finds herself reduced such that her existence is bad for feminism. If she discloses rape or abuse by a trans woman, or allyship with the idea of trans men, she too has her personhood stripped away, and she is now an antifeminist concept.)
And since trans men are now mere feminist concepts, this makes it easier to further the violent erasure of them. Trans men can't have existed historically; those were cis women who were trying to escape misogyny. Because, you see, it is a much better feminist idea to be a cis woman fighting patriarchy than to be a man fighting patriarchy, if you even consider trans men (who are, of course, identical to cis men) as capable of fighting the patriarchy. Trans men are the less-feminist idea, so they can't be allowed to exist. Alan Hart, Lou Alcott- none of them can be allowed to maintain their identity as trans men because they have more value as cis women, and they aren't people, but concepts.
And since trans men didn't exist historically, because they were all cis women, that means trans men are newcomers to the queer community. Thus, any demands to be heard, to be allowed epistemological authority over their own experiences, is entitlement; they can't demand a space that was never theirs respect their input equally to the real people who were there from the start, after all. They need to be quiet, shut up, wait their turn (which will never come) because they are, after all, men whose voices have never been absent; that's why they dominate history. Because trans men are cis men, and history is full of cis men. Historical trans men, or prominent modern trans men in queer spaces, are antifeminist concepts.
Historical erasure is a tool to strip trans men of personhood and reduce them to mere ideas, which in turn lets them be erased from the present- tomorrow's history. It's a cycle we must break free from.
"decentering trans men" is not feminist or anti patriarchy. you are doing the exact same thing that cis patriarchy is doing; silencing any gendered experience that is not cis or cis-normative/conforming. you are not punching up when you punch transgender people regardless of their chosen gender, presentation or sex characteristics. because transgender people are gender minorities. transgender men are already not centered in any conversation ever, even when in regards to their own bodies, minds, gender identities and history. we (I'm not a trans Man but I am trans Masc, for what it's worth) are not given the privileges and rights of cis men unless we mirror their bodies and actions perfectly, which ultimately puts us in more danger when we are inevitably outed as "fake" men. when we are men but do not resemble cis men, we are treated like faggots at best, by half assed allies, and defective women who need to be fixed at worst, by transphobes. it's okay to center women, or even only talk about women at all, you are not obligated to care about trans men and mascs. but purposefully "decentering" and demonizing us further will only kill us, sincerely and legitimately, not as a joke on Tumblr. and if that's your intention then I hope your communities learn to recognize that murdering minorities is not praxis and encourage you to find better means of coping. unless you're cis and pulling this shit. then I hope you lose internet connection permanently. I'm not even asking for you to do anything for us, you never even need to bring us up. just stop beating us down and painting us like oppressors. like it's the bare minimum
trans feminism should be about dismantling ideas that belong to cispatriarchy. that should include oppositional sexism. as trans people, we should be acutely aware that men and women are not meaningfully different and that people can be both, or be one without conforming to generalizations. a subsection of feminism that just reinforces patriarchal ideas of Abuser Gender and Victim Gender/Strong Gender and Weak Gender is just a queer-repackaged fascist psyop and we need to stop falling for it. you can uplift women and trans people without putting anyone else down. you can fight bigots and assholes without generalizing on the basis of their identity. please for fucks sake
