I still can’t get over the fact that people actually think Ocarina of Time had a good or even noteworthy story? Like… pretty much the entire plot is “ganondorf does a thing, go save the Sages and Zelda by diving into a series of largely unrelated dungeons.” The closest things to actual plot points are the fact that you see some of the Sages before you go to the future and the whole “turns out Sheik is Zelda” thing.

There’s not really any pathos unless you count, like, losing Navi at the end? nor is there any analysis pertaining to the tropes and conventions of the genre or the series. It’s as shallow and functional as any mainline Mario game’s plot. Hell, it’s substantially less deep than any Mario RPG’s plot except for Sticker Star (which doesn’t count as an RPG).

Majora’s Mask, you could at least make a case.

As someone who considers story a big part of Zelda games, OoT was kinda disappointing to me after having it hyped up as the biggest best most important Zelda game. Even the gameplay, though, really isn’t all that great, to me? I mean, it holds up okay, it’s fun, and I know it was absolutely revolutionary at the time, but. Having played it after playing Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword, it just feels like a lesser version of those games with a worse story. I have no nostalgia for the game so it’s just the beta version of a good Zelda game to me. And, I mean, I’m not trying to say this as a major criticism of the game. Again, I know it was revolutionary for its time. But there is something odd, to me, that it’s held up as one of the greatest games of all time when really what it was was just something that paved the way for better games. It was great for its time but time’s passage has made it kinda obsolete. It was the George Washington to TP’s Abraham Lincoln.

I feel like having “yeah it was revolutionary for the time” as a side note kinda misses the actual weight of that statement.

Because Ocarina of Time was really, REALLY revolutionary. When I first played the game, my experience with video games was pretty small, but even I could tell “Wow. This game is something special.” The first time I stepped into Hyrule Field and saw Castle Town in the distace is ingrained in my memory as one of the most awe-inspiring things I’ve ever seen in a game. I’ve of course seen much better looking things since, but none of those have the magnitude of following years of 2D, pixel-based games with your very first at all realized 3D world.
