do you mean that kay's phantom as a character is a mess, or the novel as a whole is a mess? not criticising your post, i'm genuinely curious about your thoughts

This is gonna be a shortened answer, because I'm not at home to really dig into it and pull the book and stuff, but both! There are issues throughout, but Kay's interpretation of the actual story of POTO is where it really fully unravels for me. The characterization of Christine is plain character assassination in places, weakening and turning her into a gothic damsel without the inversion of gothic tropes that Leroux leaned so heavily on. Kay is deeply engrossed by the character of Erik, and that's fine, but she does idealize him a LOT and his personality at the end is not consistent with Leroux's Erik. I also think it's the most laughably stupid conclusion to Phantom on the planet that Christine and Erik would sleep together and have a child, for like ten thousand different reasons. I could go on for ages. I think Nadir is too toothless. Every woman who rejects Erik pays with their life. It's a laundry list. And still, the book will always have a place in my heart.

Life update: I was out of vet medicine receiving mental health/physical health care for about 9 months and I'm headed back in ready with my new healthcare arsenal at the end of this month. some traumatic stuff happened involving work a few years ago and it has thrown me off a lot but I'm still here and trying to continue the vet med journey now that I've gotten the resources I need
