I can't describe how much I love them
someone with more knowledge should probably be making these posts, but i managed to catch a couple interesting things and i did a quick skim of some posts for this show and didn't see anyone else commenting on this so here you go-
the word that Kataoka uses for wife here isn't the standard one most people would use in modern common speak in Japan, he calls Odajima his 本妻, honsai, which DOES mean wife, but it specifically means legal wife, or original wife. (the kanji 本, hon, means origin among other things, and is the same kanji in 日本, Nihon, which is the Japanese name for Japan (origin of the sun).) it's an older term that isn't really used anymore from what i can glean, like i found an article talking about some Chinese men living in Japan in the 1930s who had wives back home in China (their honsai) and local wives in Japan (it didn't give a word for them).
the common word you would use today to talk about your own wife is 妻, tsuma. you might use かみさん, kamisan, also, another informal way to say it, but that one also means landlady so it definitely wouldn't be one that would fit with Kataoka and Odajima's situation at all.
later, in this bit, Kataoka says 俺の嫁, ore no yome, which is a modern slang way of saying "my wife". the internets tells me that it's gained popularity because of nerds online, as yome is an older word that means daughter-in-law, but the phrase has been picked up to mean wife, and just yome is used for wife a lot of the time now. it's a pretty informal way to say it, which makes sense given the company they're with.
the word used here for Odajima is あ姉さん, ane-san, which translates literally as older sister, but is not commonly used in speech for regular people. the more common words for older sister are お姉さん (onee-san), 姉さん (nee-san), or 姉ちゃん (nee-chan), depending on your level of formality when talking to or about your or someone else's sister. 姉, ane, by itself, can be used to talk about your older sister to other people, but it's not something you would call another person when speaking to them whether they're your sister or someone you know. あ姉さん (ane-san) however, is specifically is used to refer to the wife of a Yakuza boss, which is why it's being used here obviously.
wait, you may say, if you're one of the handful of people who saw my other post about linguistics in this show, didn't you talk about the use of aniki (兄貴) last time? isn't there a similar word for sister like that?
yeah, 姉貴 (aneki) is a word that exists, but it's not commonly used. it's an informal word used by young men sometimes, but it doesn't have the slangy Yakuza bent that 兄貴 has. あ姉さん is the word they ended up with instead.
language is cool! forgive any inaccuracies in either of my posts about this so far, i took two years of japanese at university like 20 years ago (i'm old) and have hung on to scraps of it over the years mainly because of watching japanese dramas and anime so sometimes things catch my ears still and i can combine them with things i know about japanese culture. plus the internet helps.
idk if i'll have more of these posts to make because i feel like there's people much better suited to doing this than me but i hope this was interesting for someone at least!
the switch from 本妻 to 恋女房 also carries the connotation of Kataoka's accepting/declaring his affection for Odajima.
本妻, because it means main wife, carries the connotation of duty & responsibility. just as Kataoka claimed, he's taking responsibility. u can still marry without love, u marry to merge ur companies or for financial/power backing or to fullfil ur parents wish or whatever. and ur spouse is ur spouse, LEGALLY, PRIMARILY, and ur spouse is, technically, the only officially recognized spouse and ur offspring with ur spouse is the heir, but u can have others in ur life, whether u love them or not, that's between u, ur spouse, and them. here, it feels like Kataoka is saying "ur the real one" esp bcs (before he proposed marriage) he mentioned his previous trysts with sex workers and how he never actually slept with a virgin before.
恋女房 on the other hand... that's the wife u wanna marry, that's the wife u dote on, that's the wife i yearn forrr (fun fact, 恋 can also mean "to yearn for/yearning"). Kataoka used the term while he was bleeding out in Odajima's arm after taking a bullet to protect him and then kissing him, finally, FINALLY, (after stopping himself at the hospital, promising to talk about them after everything settles down and then walk into his death). 恋女房 sounded like darling wife, to me, sounded like, i love you, you're the love of my life, please don't die, please don't die, please don't die, please don't die for me. 恋女房 is affection and devotion, against all odds.
嫁, in my own reading of their usage, is a pretty neutral term compared to the other two.
ofc Kataoka is a teasing ass and all these terms are him teasing (and declaring his affection for) Odajima but 恋女房 sticks with me so muchhh. he could've just used 女房 and be done with it but noooo, he had to add in 恋 just to make absolutely clear how he feels about Odajima; he's insane, they are insane, they make me insane.
(on another note, i love his usage of 女房 a lot bcs his mom was referred to as 女房 by Kumakara too!! so that probably means it was probably a prevalent term that was used by his dad. but also, it's just another way casual and informal, but traditional, way of referring to ur (or someone else's) wife... it's similar to "the missus" in Eng, I'd say)
(anw im not native, i just have been living in the country for A WHILE and know quite a bit about the language and the culture and have way too much interest in reading into things lol)
@noona96n ahhh thanks for adding more context! i really appreciate you!!
y'all i really want to put thanks out there to the casting director for Crazy Love Moo-Moo because casting Earth to play Noeul's arch enemy was actual genius, they are SO FUNNY playing off each other
this show is not perfect but it is also A DELIGHT. i went into it not really knowing much about the plot and i wasn't expecting Boss to be playing such a comedic character but he's chomping every single piece of scenery and crushing every scene he's in.
this kind of zaniness and comedy is actually the exact thing i need in my life right now, i'm so glad this show exists

nothin' like looking up an actor that i think looks familiar in a current jbl and seeing he was in something else relatively recent that i watched a few months ago and then noticing he's been in a million shows over the years and i scroll wayyyyy down the list and he was in a jdrama i watched not long after it came out... back in 2003...
can you hear my bones creaking over the internet because i can feel the ancient nature of my joints right now
yeah no i can't turn it off.
less than one minute into finally starting Life In Smokey Blue and here we go!
while not a flower, this is florist related! it still counts!
what we have here is the pittosporum tobira, often called just pittosporum, or pitt for short. apparently also it's called Japanese cheesewood?? that's new to me. you learn something new every day etc etc
in the floral industry, we use pitt in either the lovely dark green you see here or a kind called variegated that is a lighter green with an almost cream coloured edge to the leaves-

it's great for using in vased arrangements, the leaves are excellent for making wrist corsages, it's long lasting and versatile, AND the branches have a really lovely cucumber-y smell.
which i guess is lovely if you think cucumber smells nice anyway. like you know when cucumber candles got really popular for a minute? they smell like that.
i think it's delightful.
anyway it grows all over the world, it's a great plant and great for flower stuff, and my brain was like "'"HEY! HEY YOU HAVEN'T MADE A FLORAL POST IN A WHILE AND HERE'S THIS INSTANTLY!!! YEAH DO IT!!" so uh... yeah here we are.
cheers!

*cough*not even five minutes later*cough*
it's an anemone!
also called windflowers, for those who play the good ol' ACNH
according to bouqs.com, anemones in Japan are both seen as a flower of the dead and used for funerals, but also are a symbol of anticipation.
okay now we see if i can get through another five minutes of show without posting again
yeah no i can't turn it off.

I'm not a numbers person, so I did get a bit lost here and there, but this is truly a great report because the fact that I understood most of it is really a testament of how well the author outlined their findings.
I would hope that everyone eventually gets the money they were owed, but this also speaks to the larger issues of several Thai QL actors not being paid by companies who they have a legit contract with when working.

5 songs list: tag game
ahhhhhhh look i'm actually doing a tag game post!
thanks to @nonglukest for never giving up on the fact that i might do a tag game 😘 i survived mother's day at the flower shop so here's a tag game in celebration!
rules: just list five songs you listen to
this is one i can handle
recent ear worms:
my new favourite Monsta X song. i am obsessed, i fear
this song has set the tone for the past couple months of driving to and from work and to and from Chicago and just everywhere for me, it even spawned its own playlist based on the vibes
another recent obsession, this song is rudely catchy, i don't even know if i'd consciously listened to NMIXX before this but this song has been on repeat
justice for my baby Seunghan, this song is so good, i'm glad that SM isn't squandering his talent even if they're not promoting him as much as they could be
i really wasn't sure what to expect with this comeback but this song is so dang good
i'm even slower to do tag games than Steph claims she is so besides @poetry-protest-pornography i'm not tagging anyone because i assume you all have already done this ok byyyyyeeeeeeee
