It's actually a little sickening when you understand a person's darkness as the versions of themselves they're afraid of becoming.

The only time we've seen Xion use the power of darkness was in her boss fight in Days, after she starts looking like Sora. Her dark strength came from her refusal to become him, only to be unleashed anyway when she no longer had a choice.

When Riku released his own darkness in Days, he took the form of the man who violated his body and soul. In the process of resisting Ansem in KH1 and CoM, he was already forced to reckon with the traits they share. Then Roxas was so strong, and Riku's morality in taking him down so dubious, that Riku has to carve that reckoning into his BODY to win. This mf makes me sick!!

One more for blorbo though because TERRA. You have to understand, you can't just possess any old heart. There has to be a resonance. Terra's darkness was full of his fear of hurting his friends and losing the meaning for his strength.

So when Xehanort merged with that darkness, the resulting being was more vicious to Aqua and Ven than their own dark selves were. He was forced by a sick old man to watch his worst fears play out. To submit to the will of his own curse!!! I'm gonna throw up!!
