Ok like. Imagine life without ads. You wake up, check your messages across a variety of apps, no ads. You get up and put on the tv while you prep your breakfast, no ads. Maybe you drive somewhere and switch on the radio, no ads. Maybe you drive a long distance, yet somehow, not a single billboard on your path. You pick up a newspaper or magazine to pass the time, no advertisements only articles. You turn on your game console, the home screen is just about your games, no ads to buy more. You open a streaming app, you don't pay extra for no ads, there's just no ads ever.

Think about how much of your time is spent looking at ads. "Download ublock" yeah I know, I have. But that doesn't change that the world is covered with endless advertising. Imagine never seeing that again. How much better our lives would be.

This has been my main argument against "AI" from the very beginning.

OpenAI scraped the entire web. All of which had been a labor of love from humans. Wikipedia is the backbone of a lot of LLMs, and that was volunteer human labor. They stole it and now they're selling it back to us.

And worse, they're trying to destroy the free sources that they stole from. It's destruction of human knowledge on an unprecedented scale. The burning of the library of Alexandria has nothing on this.

Stop saying "chatGPT" when you mean "Sam Altman and his corporate cronies." Stop saying "AI" when you mean "speculative investor backed environmental destruction".

You CANNOT keep letting these fuckheads scapegoat a computer and absolve themselves of all blame.

The fucking large language models are computer programs. They are not people, and they are certainly not decision makers.

Be angry at the FUCKING COMPANIES WALLING OFF INFORMATION instead of raging about how a specific type of statistical regression is somehow coming into your home and eating your pets.

Consider: it is the healthiest and most normal thing in the world to go to your close friends and loved ones with problems in your friendships and relationships. Not to gossip, not to talk shit, but I go "Hey, me and (x, not related to my current partners) are on the rocks right now, can I talk it out with you?" and then you get input, advice, you get to process your feelings through conversation, then you're probably more equipped to go back to the person and go "hey I've been thinking and processing, I feel xyz."

Two major thoughts here:

Don't let anyone convince you that this type of conversation should only exist in therapy. Your friends and loved ones are there for you. Its called a support system for a reason. Getting advice and comfort is entirely different from talking shit.

If someone gets upset with you for talking about your interpersonal problems with your friends, its worth examining that dynamic. Why are they so worried other people will find out how they're treating you? This isn't like 100% always a bad thing, but like. Consider if there's other parts of the relationship that feel controlled. Consider how listened to and respected you feel, how safe you feel, how independent and free to act you feel.

My favorite advice from my favorite prof was to stop worrying so much about making dialogue signifiers "exciting."

Basically his rule was if you want to make the dialogue fast-paced, quippy, or the major focus, just use "he said," "she said," "he said" over and over (or "x said," "y said," "x said" for similar-gendered characters). The reader does not care - their brain is filtering it out (and only the writer is reading it as repetitive).

If you want to focus more on the "blocking" of a scene, of course stretch things out with adverbs and zazzy signifiers. But don't stress if that's not the goal. You're not being boring. Your reader literally won't notice.
