Look, Iâm sorry Jonny Sims didnât emerge from your speakers like an indie podcast version of Sadako Yamamura, hold you gently by the hand, look you in the eyes, and say âThe Archivist kept forgetting the lighter because he was supernaturally unable to perceive it. I thought I was being obvious, what with the fact it was given to him by the embodiment of mind control and manipulation and he has been incapable of remembering it since it was introduced, despite multiple people pointing it out to him (up to and including the Big Badâs emissary during her villain monologue). I should have realized I couldnât compete with wannabe fandom comediansâ determination to run âJon is so stupidâ jokes so far into the ground theyâre starting to become avatars of the Buried.â
You know, at this point I donât think even the above scenario would work with some people, since there are some who still missed the obvious hints that Jon has always believed in the supernatural and his skepticism was all an act to keep something supernatural from harming him. Hints like Jon explicitly saying âIâve always believed in the supernatural, I believe every statement thatâs gone on tape, the skepticism was an act to throw off a [supernatural] being that I believe is watching meâ. Maybe if Jonny Sims crawled out of the speaker and hovered over their shoulders as the scrolled tumblr dot com with a spray bottle in one hand ready to be employed whenever a hilarious âlol canât believe jon doesnât believe in the supernatural even after an evil spider monster tried to eat himâ post shows up.Â
Not to dig up old debates but I was taking a shower so my mind drifted. In the Dabb era, where Dean is constantly criticized for being too angry, too harsh, too exaggerated in his behaviors, etc, Dean is actually the only character who displays appropriate emotional reactions to the given situations.

Oh I just thought about...Dean's anger at Mary at least in part being that he views her trauma-driven withdrawal from them as a rejection of the role of mother. And he resents the hell out of that. How dare she, he thinks, reject the role of mother when he was never allowed to? When he wore it from the age of four though it was too big and heavy for him? It wasn't his but he took it on, why should she get to refuse it when it's hers? He's not capable of viewing Mary objectively as a traumatized woman who died at 29 and was brought back at 59 toa world she doesn't understand and her worst nightmare having come true. He only sees his mom refusing to be his mom.

Also yeah exactly that and like. On the rare occasion when Iâm not just ignoring the whole Moriah and Jack Bomb storylines because theyâre so OOC and stupid and clearly just there to create conflict regardless of how much actual sense it makes for Deanâs character...when I do engage with Deanâs actions in Moriah and Unity, I feel like this explains them a lot.
Under a cut because this post is already long and this is. Really incoherent.
Dean thinks of hunting and parenthood as completely separate roles that cannot coexist. Regardless of the evidence (Jodi with Claire and Alex anyone?) that it IS possible to be a hunter without making it your entire life and your kidsâ entire lives as well. Iâd even argue Jo Harvelle is an example of this. Her dad was a hunter, but he didnât drag her into it. Ellen wasnât a hunter either. Jo chose to become a hunter when she was older, not unlike Claire. And not unlike Claire, she did it despite other options and lots of protest from her mom. So Iâd argue thatâs two examples of kids who were raised by hunters/around hunting who werenât forced into it the way Dean and Sam were.
But Dean is continually put into situations where his desire to be a parent and his felt obligation to be a hunter collide. With Ben he tried to choose fatherhood, and when that didnât work he tried to do both. And when that didnât work, he chose hunting.
(With Emma he didnât get a chance to make a choice but it was there, shimmering in the air for a moment.)
With Jack he refuses the role of father at first. But when he accepts it, he almost has no choice but to balance hunting and fatherhood. And for a while, it works. Or so he thinks, but then his mom dies. And Dean either interprets this as he wasnât a good enough father because he was trying to do both (he didnât realize something was up with his kid and help him before it got this bad), or he wasnât a good enough hunter because he was trying to do both (he didnât realize Jack was dangerous and stop him before he hurt someone). Or hell, maybe he thinks both things! Probably he thinks both things.
So then, in his grief and anger, he tries to just be a hunter when it comes to Jack. But he still is a father, because if youâre even a halfway good one you canât choose it and then decide to stop choosing it.
Which is why Deanâs so fucked up in season 15 with regards to Jack, literally going from fighting a supernatural creature because they want to hurt him and baking him a birthday cake to being willing to sacrifice him to stop Chuck within episodes. Heâs waffling back and forth between father and hunter and doing both poorly, because itâs not a decision he knows how to make. (Because he isnât and has never been and will never be John, who chose hunter and never looked back.)
But heâs never learned how to balance the two roles. And heâs never felt he can just forsake hunting. Which is why I feel like his ultimate ending should have been choosing fatherhood, choosing what he wants over what he feels obligated to do, and leaving hunting behind.

In the third, Jon is holding a tape recorder and talking into it intensely. He says âIâve packed a bag with food and water and torches should my excursions take longer than anticipated.â Peter wheezes with laughter while Elias says âbackpack where he keeps his applesauce! ba-â.Â
In the fourth, the world has ended and Martin holds Jon, trying to comfort him. Peter is gone and Elias is covered in orange eyes. He says âhow is your barbeque going now, archivist? Next time you invite Jonah Magnusâ]

Before, I was waiting for the next appearance of the giant turtle monster, but now I am also waiting for the grand return of Dr. Shaq*, the wholesome puffer boi who we only knew from the tail end of the elevator scene but we know heâs gonna come back because Griffin gave him the exact number of characterization bulletpoints that Justin said it took to cement an NPCâs continued role in a campaign. (*btw, are we gonna spell it like that or are we gonna do something different? Shac? Shak? Shack? Maybe even Jacques, as in Jacques Cousteau?)

I really liked some of the ideas tossed around in Ethersea Episode 5 for their currency, Lux, so I drew what I like to think it could look like.
1. Hexagonal money *would* be really cool but unless theyâre using a base 6 or 3 counting system it made more sense to make it pentagonal and keep it âbase 10âł. Â 2. The snapping together like legos thing and color changing to indicate how much money is in the stack at a glance without having to count is very very cool and also implies pretty good color vision which is fun world building.
I think we all listened to Season 1 of TMA and came away with the impression Jon bullied poor sweet Martin the entire time. Like it was just this one-sided hate spew at Martin who just took it because of unrequited love.Â
But now I think itâs safe to say Martin was an unstoppable force Jon had zero ability to deal with. Jon would be like âI hate spiders. Weâd all be better off without them.â and then Martin would be like âSorry, excuse me, I donât mean to be rude and maybe this isnât my placeââ and then without waiting just utterly destroy Jon verbally. Decimate him. Weâre talking âiâve prepared a 10 minute presentation on how wrong you are, yes thereâs slides.â And Jon buckles down because he is incapable of admitting heâs wrong, and then itâs a shouting match and Tim and Sasha are sticking their heads in because âwhat the fuck is happening.â
And afterwards, Jon just sits in his office and talks shit to a tape recorder because he canât stand how much Martin does not respect him.
