Ms Paint test of the big 3
yeah this is them in a nutshell
“Give in to my demands,” threatened Dr. Trackneto, the eggheaded mutant scientist, “Every minute you don’t, I shall telepathically bend rails somewhere on your railway!”
The Fat Controller held firm. “This is my hat.”
“So be it.”
Percy And The Blockbuster Tapes
@houseboatisland
ty for this!!
Percy was waiting for his signal to change, when a terrible thought struck him.
“I NEVER ONCE REWOUND MY BLOCKBUSTER TAPES!” he shrieked, “I must have inconvenienced, like, THIRTY PEOPLE!!!”
“The 9:05, sir?” asked Henry, anxiously, “But… that’ll overlap with my therapist appointment.”
“That’s why you’re able to take the 9:05, now, Henry,” pointed the Fat Controller, “Your therapist said you’re above his paygrade.”
“…Oh… I suppose that’s… fair, sir…”
But for weeks afterwards, the other engines laughed and said, “Look! There’s Thomas, who wanted to make Three Bean Salad but forgot about the beans!”
Yooooo!
First: How have you been doing Houseboat?
Second: I know recently you made a reblog on how much you love Season 1 (as do I)! What would you consider to be your favorite and least favorite episodes of that season? If you don’t have any for either, that’s fine.
Third: Going off of question 2, what is your favorite episode of the entire series and why?
Fourth: I know you mentioned a couple of times of James and Thomas having a thing in the 20s-30s. Would they ever be able to rekindle that relationship again in the future? If so, how? If not, why?
Feel free to answer or not answer any of these questions and I hope you have a great day today! 🫶🏻
Sorry for the nonresponse, it's been one heck of a year for me personally.
I've been okay, apart from the writing drought. My irl job has thrown many curveballs at me that have absorbed much of my personal time, but recent staff-related developments may mean that either gets better... or worse. We'll see. Thanks for asking!
I wouldn't say any of the Season 1 episodes are bad, but if I had to pick a least favorite it would be Thomas and the Guard. At its core it's a great episode mainly for the reason that it showcases the early days of Thomas running his branchline and how he still has a lot to come to grips with. At the same time, other episodes do that and not much happens in this episode. Thomas kicks Henry while he's down, Thomas is self-important and forgets something, Thomas apologizes... you can find these concepts in at least six other episodes this season and not have to watch this one. But I digress. I'd still feel like we lost out if this episode was somehow skipped for adaptation to TV. Again, not a bad episode, but not a standout. (I'm still disgusted by the shot of the Guard drinking what's clearly milk when he catches up with the train after running nonstop... what, at least a mile? And this is a rural 1920s commuter train on a hot summer day... I wouldn't trust it...)
My favorite Season 1 episode is a two-way tie between everyone's usual favorite, The Flying Kipper, and less orthodoxly, Toby and the Stout Gentleman. My fondness for TFK stems from all its usual praises: the cinematography, the direness with which Henry's crash is handled, the music, and of course the much-awaited payoff to Henry's arc so far. After a lifetime of illness and abuse with only a year-ish of relief, he is flung excruciatingly down to the lowest point of his life. Then, he is figuratively and physically reborn, and given a fresh start that nobody, least of all himself, expected.
Toby and the Stout Gentleman I love for several reasons: the aesthetic of Toby's old railway, (which I love so much that I followed the TV Series in placing it on Sodor,) the uniquely bittersweet nature of the story, some (to me) important revelations in terms of how humans and engines interact and see each other in this universe, and as with TFK, the tone and camera-work. That music-less wide shot of Toby and Henrietta crawling by the windmill as the wind blusters always strikes me. Welcome to the real world, kids! Overdue bills! Losing your beloved home! You wanted happy-go-lucky whimsy? Tough! Should've tuned in to Nick Jr!
Thomas and James... there was a star-crossed relationship if there ever was one. *lights up my gay gossiping cigarette and puts my elbow on the table* ...No, they'll never be like that again. The two hotheads have drifted apart too far. Thomas is committed to his branchline, whereas James sees himself as above branchlines; critical lifestyle choice disagreement. *shakes my head* Both like the idea of being strong and independent, and butt heads more than they cooperate. James will never choose Thomas' relationship over his friendship with the Big Engines, something Thomas would definitely demand and then take issue with, and James will also feel slighted when Thomas does not in fact compliment him a million times a day. So, no, there's not a snowball's chance they ever rekindle things. But... do they wonder about it, even if they never dare admit it to a single soul? Only every damn time they meet at the Junction! *flings my wrist* These two are. A. Mess.

The newest Tidmouth drama is James telling Henry he has “cryptkeeper buffers.”
