Informative Ancient Egypt Comics: BROS

Our 1st place contest winner requested a Niankhkhnum and Khnumhotep comic as their prize.

I took a class about Ancient Egypt last semester and we had a whole lecture dedicated to talking about how gay Niankhkhnum and Khnumhotep were. Their tomb walls were decorated with scenes of them ignoring their wives in favor of embracing each other. In one scene, the couple is seated at a banquet table that is usually reserved for a husband and wife. There’s an entire motif of Khnumhotep holding lotus flowers which in ancient Egyptian tradition symbolizes femininity. Khnumhotep offers the lotus flower to Niankhkhnum, something that only wives were ever depicted as doing for their husbands. In fact, Khnumhotep is repeatedly depicted as uniquely feminine, being shown smaller and shorter than his partner Niankhkhnum and being placed in the role of a woman. Size is a big deal in Egyptian art, husbands are almost always shown as being larger and taller than their wives. So for two men of equal status to be shown in once again, a marital fashion, is pretty telling. Not to mention they were literally buried together which is the strongest bond two people could share in ancient Egypt, as it would mean sharing the journey to the afterlife together. And yet 90% of the academic text about these two talks about these clues in vague terms and analyze the great “brotherhood” they shared, and the enigma of Khnumhotep being depicted as feminine. Apparently it’s too hard for archaeologists to accept homosexuality in the ancient world, as well as the possibility of trans individuals.

On the last note, I was walking around the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago and there is a mummy on exhibit. It caught my attention because the panel that was describing it was talking about how it was a woman’s body in a male coffin and wow, the Egyptian working that day really screwed that up. My summary, not actual words, sorry I can’t remember verbatim but it basically said that someone screwed up.

They claimed that the Egyptians screwed up a burial.

The Egyptians. Screwed up. A burial.

Now I’m not an expert in Ancient Egypt but from what I know, and what the exhibit was telling me, burials and the afterlife and all that jazz DEFINED the Egyptian religion and culture. They don’t just ‘screw up’. So instead of thinking outside the box for two seconds and wonder why else a genetically female body was in a male coffin, the ‘researchers’ blatantly disregard the rest of their research and decided to call it a screw up. Instead of, you know, admitting that maybe this mummy presented as male during his life and was therefore honorably buried as he was identified. But it would be too much of a stretch to admit that a transgender person could have existed back then.

Posts talking about why you don’t ship something are valid, but you know what isn’t valid?

Tagging your post with the ship you’re arguing against!

People follow those ship tags and search terms because they enjoy the ship, NOT because they wanna see people’s analyses of why their ship wouldn’t work or why it’s not as good as this other ship and blah blah blah. I’m seeing a lot of anti-lukanette and anti-adrigami being tagged as #lukanette and #adrigami and it needs to stop.

How do you express your feelings about a particular ship that you’re not a fan of while still respecting the shippers?

Follow these steps:

Do NOT tag the post with the ships you are expressing negative opinion about. Only tag posts with ships that you’re expressing a positive opinion about. Before you use a tag, think about why someone might be following that tag first.

Don’t even use the name of the ship anywhere in the post. It’s possible to follow searches as well as tags, so instead of saying something like “I don’t ship Adrigami”, say “I don’t ship Kagami and Adrien together.” Even tagging or using the phrase “Adrien x Kagami” is skating on thin ice imo.

This is the only exception to rule 2, but be sure to tag your posts as “#anti (insert ship name here)” so that people who enjoy the ship and don’t want to see your negative opinion can blacklist the tag and thus don’t have to see your post. It doesn’t matter if your post is a genuine analysis or polite or respectful in tone. Give people the means to avoid the kinds of posts that they don’t want to see.

DO NOT tag your posts with unrelated ship tags. If you’re not discussing the ship or the ship isn’t featured in the post, don’t junk up the ship tag with irrelevant content. Again, think about what people following the tag wants to see.

I will confess that I am kind of breaking rule 4 here, but that’s because I’m usually seeing these kinds of posts in the love square and Lukagami tags and those are the people who need to see this message the most so that they can respect other ship tags. I know most people mean no ill intent but hopefully now you know how to tag your posts more respectfully next time. This is how we can agree and disagree on certain ships without inciting a ship war.

Yes, if you are writing something negative about a ship, tag it anti (ship), that’s for sure. Although using that tag does still make it show up on said (ship) tag, but at least that way those who want to filter it, can filter it.

Also, if you’re posting a purely hate/vent post probably a good idea not to tag the ship. Just for your own sake at that point.

And obviously, don’t use tags that don’t apply to your content.

Well meaning criticism and annalysis though… you should be allowed to tag (again, with the anti (ship) tag as well). Just because some people don’t want to see anything REMOTELY negative, doesn’t mean that EVERYONE wants that. The post is actively about that ship, the tag is relevant, those who don’t want that content can filter the anti tag if they’re that sensitive. If not, most of these posts make their intentions known in the very large and bold title so it’s pretty easy to scroll past. I just don’t see why people making valid and considerate criticism should have to bend over backwards to make sure anyone who maybe might not want to see their content doesn’t have to. That’s on the viewer to filter themselves. And again, people should ABSOLUTELY tag with anti (ship) to make that possible, but avoiding saying the name of a ship you’re analyzing seems like total overkill to me.

Thank you for pointing this out! I often love to look at ship art/fanfic for fun and sometimes to even cheer me up but seeing hate for something that I love makes me feel terrible and awful, even put me in a worse mood. Also, if you dont like a ship, just blacklist it so you dont see it and be compelled to make an entire post about how awful you think that ship is as that would negatively effects others too!
