- - βββ [ CHAPTER I: RECONCILE ]
IN HAEUNβS apartment, only her soft hums could be heard. She hummed as she gathered her belongings and stuffed them into her bag before heading out the door to work.
Haeun was a medical student who had to drop out in order to fund her brother's schooling who lived in another city. Her routine had become dreadful now that she was no longer a student. It only consisted of: Waking up, eating breakfast, taking a shower, leaving the apartment, working, returning home, eating dinner, studying, and then calling it a day
Haeun wouldn't be working if it weren't for the empty presence of her parents. Apparently, her parents got divorced just as she turned legal, her father became alcoholic as her mother had gone off and married a rich man, their lack of responsibilities forced Haeun to work and support herself and her brother
The girl fished out her phone and texted her friend whom she never met in a long time while walking to the elevator, "Where are you?" She mumbled the text message to herself when she arrived in front of the elevator
I'm on my way, don't worry. She texted back before pressing the button. Waiting for a few seconds, the elevator made a noise to notify its arrival and opened its doors. Fuck, Haeun thought to herself when she saw who was inside the elevator
It was no other than Lee Eunhyuk himself and his little sister, Lee Eunyu. Don't get her wrong, Haeun didn't dislike Eunyu but Eunhyuk had always pissed her off. Mustering the fakest smile she could do, the girl stepped forward and stood beside Eunyu, which made Eunyu stand in between the rivals
Ding! The metal doors had shut tight, Haeun turned down her keyboard's noise and continued to chat with her friend through text
The tension inside the elevator was too suffocating which made Eunyu sigh, Β while the two glared at each other at different times
Haeun looked up to one of the mirrors in the elevator, catching Eunhyuk's stare on her phone. "Can you stop texting? It's really distracting," Eunhyuk said
Eunyu choked on her own spit while Haeun's lips formed into a grin before speaking, "Why are you even looking at my texts?"
Both of their eyes met and held eye contact except their eyes showed different emotions, one had enjoyment while one had annoyance. Both of them were too prideful to tear their gazes off. Seconds by a second, the two didn't budge and Eunyu started to get sick of it
"You two!" Eunyu shouted and snapped her fingers in front of their eyes which forced them to turn their heads around
"Yah! both of you are adults already yet the two of you acts so childish!" Eunyu exclaimed and eyed the two; who looked at the floor as if they were being scolded by their mother
"Why are you guys like this?"
Before one could speak up, the elevator had already reached the ground floor. "Ding!" Haeun's lips turned to a smile as she hurriedly ran to the exit and opened the doors, leaving the two siblings
"No more disturbance," She let out a sigh of relief before calling for a cab to meet her friend
After a long day of work and catching up, Haeun dropped her bag on the floor and rested on her bed. Nothing much happened, she only caught up with her best friend after dropping out. But one of their conversations did strike her
"I heard that Eunhyuk also lives in the same building as you," Her friend, Yunji, said while sipping her coffee. Haeun who was chewing her bread nodded in response
"Yeah, he lives like a floor above me,"
"By the way... why did you guys hate each other?" Yunji asked, her brows furrowed in confusion. Haeun only sighed before explaining, "We always fought for the top spot... racing for the teacher's question, brawling for the books in the library, and of course fighting for the top spots during the exams," she explained with a smile.
"Ah... is that so..." Yunji's sentence trailed before continuing hers, "You guys aren't in med school anymore, try reconciling- I mean, Eunhyuk is quite attractive,"
Yunji was taken aback when Haeun's eyes widened as she choked on her bread. "Oh goodness, are you okay?" she shouted as she handed her water. "No- are you okay?" she cried as she cleared the food. "What?" Yunji's brow furrowed
"Reconcile? Eunhyuk? Attractive? What kind of nonsense are you talking?"
Her friend only shrugged before giving an excuse, "I'm only sharing my thoughts,"
"Reconcile? Is she thinking that I should be his friend? Such nonsense," Haeun recalled to herself before dozing off to sleep
Haeun exited her apartment with a frown formed on her face, the conversation still floating around her mind. Be friends with Eunhyuk? She'd rather eat sand. The girl gloomily walked to the elevator with her phone in hand
"Noona, Iβm on my way to your apartment because I want to discuss things with you. Meet me in the lobby, it's urgent," Reading the message from her younger brother, Haeun immediately pressed the elevatorβs button but nothing happened, her eyes looked down at the button, finally noticing the "Under Maintenance" sign that was placed
"Are you kidding me right now," Haeun groaned and lightly slammed her head on the wall before placing her phone back and walking herself to the stairs. A few minutes passed, and Haeun finally arrived on the ground floor, she opened the doors, she saw people gathered in the lobby area
"Damn it, I'm late!" grumbled one of the guys as he attempted to open the shutters. She sighed and dug out her phone, only to discover there was no service; the day was just getting worse. "Excuse me - Do you have any service?"
She turned around to find Eunhyuk and another lady standing behind her, and the words of her friend hit her. "There's no service," Eunhyuk remarked. "How about you?" she questioned Haeun, who ended up giving the same answer. "What's going on here?" Haeun inquired, intrigued. "Did you just come down here?"
Haeun nodded in response, "Did you see anything strange?" She shot another question, "What's there to be suspicious of-"
"Like what?" Eunhyuk cut her off which made Haeun let out a distressed sigh and walk away, not wanting to get involved in the conversation any longer and get annoyed by his presence. "Hey- Hey! Anyone inside?" A loud whining voice shot out of nowhere, grabbing everyone's attention
Haeun looked back to see an old couple rambling in front of the security office, the girl walked to the location to see the commotion, "I took photos of this as proof, bam!" One of the insiders said, "Ahjussi! Closing your business for a day won't make you go bankrupt!" Haeun shouted at the old man when she stood next to the woman who took the photos
"Is it still closed?" The woman from before asked, none of them replied back which made her push them aside and kick the glass doors, which made panic arise among them. "W-wait!" The old man stopped her from doing another kick, "What are you doing?"
"Move aside if you're not gonna help,"
"We'll have to pay to get the door fixed! Are you going to pay for it all?"
"Excuse me," A voice interrupted, all of their eyes turned to the owner, who was actually Eunhyuk, holding a fire extinguisher, "Who are you- hey!" The old man stepped back as Eunhyuk slammed the chains with the fire extinguisher, which surprised everyone
As soon as the chains broke, Eunhyuk stepped back to look around, Haeun took the chance to find out about the recent events, as she took off the chains, she looked at the old man who was still in shock
"Ahjussi, are you okay? Your wig isn't in place," Haeun said with a smile, the chains dropped to the floor and she immediately entered the room. "You fucking bitch!" He cursed, following the woman who tried to kick the doors.
Haeun turned on the computers while the woman checked the phones, "Hello, this is firefighter Seo Yi-kyung-" Before she could finish her sentence, she was cut off by a monotonic voice which caught bought Haeun and the old man's attention "Landlines must be working,"
Then the computer finally turned on, the first thing Haeun did was open a search engine and look for recent news but the computer didn't have internet which turned everything useless. The girl left and decided to check the building's route, the lights began to turn off which gave her an eerie feeling
As soon as turned left, she met Eunhyuk who was also surprised by her presence, she didn't bother on bickering with him because she wanted to see her brother immediately, the two of them walked together back to the lobby in silence and saw a crowd of people staring at the entrance
Both Eunhyuk and Haeun looked at the door, seeing a tall creature in a hospital gown. "What the hell is that?" Haeun said in disbelief when she saw the tall creature with blood in its body, one of the neighbour's dogs started to bark excessively, "Close it," Eunhyuk said but no one budged or lifted a muscle
The monster's jaw widened and showed its long tongue that tried to break into the building, causing everyone to step back, "Lower the gates! Hurry!"
As soon as Eunhyuk shouted, the monster had already broken in which made panicked the residents. Some began to run and some were too shocked to do so, one of them was stabbed by the monster's tongue as they continuously drank their blood, the place was too vulnerable from the monster
Eunhyuk had attacked the monster with the fire extinguisher at the proper moment, and as he was attacking, he requested the other residents to lock the gate as he forced the creature to retreat. Due to the residents' tardiness in closing the gate, Eunhyuk ran out of extinguisher gas, which was bad... really bad
Fear was visible in his eyes as he stared at the monster that was about to attack him, the fire extinguisher in his hands was suddenly out of Eunhyuk's grasp and the monster's tongue was suddenly slapped away from the sides before it could touch him, it was Haeun
Yi-kyung who watched from the sides took this as the chance to push back the monster using her body, the shutters were about to close and Yi-kyung was still outside. Eunhyuk immediately ran to the shutters and tried to slow it down while Haeun crawled under and helped Yi-kyung who was attacked by the legΒ
βCome on!β Haeun exclaimed when their fingers were only centimeters away from touching, she had to lean in further to meet Yi-Kyungβs hand. As soon as she reached for her hand, she dragged her inside with all of her might
While Eunhyuk tried so hard for the shutters to slow down, Haeun successfully helped her inside. Eunhyuk had finally let go of the shutters and grabbed the two women by the back of the clothes
The three of them were suddenly pulled back, sitting on the floor uncomfortably. But the tongue came back, it slid through the shutters and opened its core, which splattered blood in Haeun's face
Unfortunately, the residents were too busy to notice the blood when they were yet to recover from the events that just happened recently. The tongue desperately tried to slide in but it wasn't thin enough, so it finally slid out and the monster walked away
"What was that?" Haeun shakily got up and walked herself to the bathroom. Everything happened so fast, her heart was beating rapidly when she entered the bathroom, she felt very weak
It felt like something would happen to her. She let out a sigh before washing off the blood on her face and tying her hair.
