I cannot emphasize this one enough. if you’re still using the same sheets you had in college, you should probably get new ones. get yourself some 100% bamboo rayon sheets—they’re silky and perfect for summer and great for sensitive skin! or, if you’re cold all the time, flannel sheets!
kitchen knives. or even just one really good kitchen knife.
new curtains—blackout if you are a creature of the night like I am
fleece lined anything, but especially sweatpants and hoodies. wool lined socks are also good. if you don’t have the option of coming home after work and putting on an entire outfit that is loose and fuzzy, you should change that, because you deserve that option.
cookie sheets with a layer of air between the top and the bottom. the bottoms of your cookies will never burn again.
kitchen scale!!! no more leveling off flour with a knife and getting it all over the table!! now all your measuring is just shoveling stuff in and out of bowls like you’re at the beach. baking is both more accurate and also way more fun.
coffee bean grinder. if you want to upgrade your coffee experience, this is a great one-time purchase. just-ground beans have a much better flavor than pre-ground.
CDs!! ask for a gift card and expand your physical music collection! or a collection of the DVDs for your favorite show!
A few more things!
Good luggage. Whether it’s a suitcase or a duffel bag or even just packing cubes, it’s all helpful!
Good art. If it’s someone you trust, you can ask them to surprise you with a piece they like, otherwise you can have a few back up suggestions of ideas (I saw a framed piece of just the hands from Michaelangelo’s The Creation of Man and have not forgot about it since)
Good good pillows or fluffy blankets to go along with those nice new sheets from above
Office supplies. Pens, markers, sharpies. All the sharpies.
Coffee travel mugs (can one have too many?). If they say they still want more ideas, also ask for a bag of their favorite beans/tea
Look around your house, what do you have that is still from college? Ask for a better one of those.
And for the future planning, especially if you’re me and forget things: make a document of “things I’d like but don’t want to buy for myself frivolously” and then select items from that for a wishlist.
Bath sheets. Not bath towels. Bath sheets. Maybe if you're petite a regular towel wraps around you well enough but every size of person deserves to be able to wrap themselves all up in fluffy towel and have it be big and blankety and nice.

Today I heard Avicii's "Wake Me Up" and then saw a sign about Mental Health Awareness Day and that combo could go a really sad place but it didn't this time. Because the thing is, that song's not far off 10 years old. And the artist behind it isn't still here to wake up... but I am.
I was walking along, listening to the song a second time after leaving the Starbucks that had it on and I just thought... holy shit. That's now. I'm awake.
Idk who needs to hear it, but man. In my early 20s I FELT that song. I felt it HARD. It was there for me in times where I really did want things to just be over. But here's the thing. Idk that any of that shit I was dealing with then is really fully and forever over. But against all odds I AM wiser and I AM older. It happened. I'm here. I made it.
I am a happier, healthier, stronger person in my early 30s than I was in my early 20s and the person my 20-something self wanted to wake up as? She's here. She's me. She made it. She's not exactly all the things the old me might have guessed, but she's awake. And that's what counts.
I try not to make blanket promises that things get better, because life is hard, and making things better is hard, and it takes long term hard work and long term support from other people. I don't know how to promise that happens. But man. It sure is worth it. So I guess what I wanna say is that I'm glad I believed I could be wiser and older. Because I am for sure a dumbass, but I am also for sure both of those other things. And I don't need anybody else to wake me up, anymore.

This time of year is always very nostalgic for me bc I used to be the Token Gentile at an office and every few months there'd be a Jewish holiday and my friend would be like "Hey, I need you to do Gentile things for us" and I'd be like hell yes dude. Gentile Things often meant I'd sign things in exchange for a few dollars on venmo but Pesach was a special time for me because it meant everyone gave me boxes of pasta, cereal, and other baked goods. The first time my friends were like "Hey for reasons we won't bother getting into we're going to give you all of our bread" I was like, it is a powerful responsibility but as an Ally I cannot refuse. Best time of the year, frankly
Reminds me of the year I spent in a house with a Muslim housemate, and he ate nothing during the day throughout Ramadan - then of course he would be hungry af and buy a fuckload of food as soon as he got off work in the evening. Around midnight, he’d realize he just couldn’t eat everything he’d bought on his own, and come knock at my door to ask if I felt like having dinner again.
I always felt like having dinner again.
I misread that as ‘Tolkien Gentile’ and felt let-down by the post.
On the contrary, it feels very Tolkien for people with unfamiliar customs to show up and give you a bunch of their food with barely an explanation. Like a reverse of the opening of The Hobbit where the dwarves show up and eat all Bilbo's seed cake, or something.
