Ever since we started growing our own food (last year) we'll occasionally get asked "So, do you grow all your own food?" And of course the answer is no, far from it! However, there will occasionally be a meal that is 100% sourced from our land and those meals are worth celebrating! Today's omelette included our Shiitakes, baby spinach, and eggs cooked in saved bacon grease from our B&L pig from Gardiner, NY! For all my talk about localism and decentralization over the years, it sure feels great to do some ⚡️
Yeehaw! 12 gallons of bone broth!
Constructing some garden beds in the front yard that will get a bit more full sun than the south garden. Had to compromise with the kiddos tho as they wanted to keep the front yard clear for baseball, other wise I would have turned the whole front yard into a second garden (and I will one day!) or at least put these first beds in the middle.
I opted to put em at the base of the hill where it flattens out a bit (and to save me some work with the shovel) and, as I've become increasingly enthralled with sacred geometry, I made one of my favorite symbols: the infinity sign (also my lone tattoo!) and which I now see more as a toroidal field.
There was a certain magick in just construction that shape out of stone. Did the first burn last night to prepare the ground for some incoming compost. Will do the second lobe today if time permits!
Dryad's Saddle on a hickory stump!
Awwwww shiiiiiitakeee!!!
Installing two "nucs" of bees!
Booch, bees and ramps. #ilovespring
Epic day. Woke up early. Me and my buddy Ovi got a ton of beautiful compost for $30/ton from Ulster Co. Resource Reclamation Center to top off the garden beds with. Interviewed Dr Bradley Campbell for the Terrain Theory pod, then played pick up baseball with friends and fam before an egg hunt and Easter / Passover feast. Oh! And helped my mother in-law get her raised beds lined and turned. Spring fucking rocks.
Back yard ginger turmeric tea!
Today we took down an old Rock Oak to allow for more morning sun in the South garden and our future east facing orchard. With the help of some intrepid woodsmen and volunteer friend hauler/stackers we turned that beautiful hard wood into two cords of fire wood for next season. And the space created in the sky will allow much more sunlight in the gardens beneath. Gratitude. All good things.
A use for plastic takeout containers.
Let's grooooow!
Here we go again!
It's true what they say about the off season regarding permaculture. Now that it's early April 2022 here in the Catskills it's time to get moving again. Today I got two of my five water catchment tanks reassembled with their screen tops and wire-secured the downspouts. As always, it's good to have a project.
Ruthy and Opal got some seeds started under some grow lights inside. I'm contemplating a front yard more light-heavy garden. May start small and just do a couple beds instead the full expanse I imagine for the future. (The kids prefer we leave the front yard as a baseball field. Fair enough.)
Also began clearing some smaller trees from our east facing hillside in preparation for a fruit and nut tree orchard.
Rebuild Eden.
In other news, my best friend and I started a podcast following our health and wellness journey over the past two years. It's called The Terrain Theory Podcast and you can find it here.

After doing a lot of research (see below) I decided to make a tincture from this extraordinary plant.
