Houston at my job!
We did a small outing to petsmart today! Houston is seriously coming along with his heel. He wowed me! Disregard the dirty gear, itās been awhile! But just really proud of him cuz we went to train at petsmart, and there was a doberman being aggressive, barking, and trying to lunge at us. Other than whining a bit, he held his sit by my side and was looking right up at me and ignoring the dog! Good job, Houston. <3
I taught Houston how to close doors with his nose instead! As he was very much scratching them up by using his paws. D:
"What a beautiful world it would be if people had hearts like dogs"
He definitely loves this house š
woo! back to training after moving everything in.
Houston and his friends! Kiska the Husky and Icarus the Borzoi!
Houston was able to hang out with @officialleoneabbacchioĀ ās Mikitaka! Sheās a duck toller retriever. He visited her when he was itty bitty as well, and she used to be SO much bigger than her! The tables kind of turned x) They had so much fun, and itās always, always a thrill to visit Emi. <3
Nalla is the happiest hufflepup ever. I love her so much

Photos from our previous training outing with our trainer! I really can't express with detail how much I love my trainer. She is honestly a second therapist to me. She noticed I was getting incredibly frustrated with this session and was on the verge of a breakdown and she knows exactly what to say to calm me down and bring myself together again. My boyfriend was with us too and he is always a great support, and when things got frustrating he took me, per her suggestion, on a walk with Houston to calm down before returning to the session with a new atmosphere. I am so grateful to have people in my life who understand my struggles and disabilities, and are not only patient, but kind and supportive. I would seriously become undone without them
Houston went to the movies with me last night and did utterly FANTASTIC! It was his first NON pet friendly outing and he just absolutely nailed it. These outings will be far and in between as he still gets his collective training together, but I trusted him enough to do this outing soundly and he absolutely proved me right. He slept the entire movie and wasn't alarmed by any of the noises from it whatsoever, including gunshots! Also excuse the dropped leash photo. I just really wanted a momento from this outing that wasn't a picture of him under my seat. There weren't many folks around when I did it x)
some drills! hold it needs improvement. getting a tripod soon to record stuff like this better <3
I'm looking for potential Psychiatric Service Dog breeds, but I have a physical condition that limits the amount of exercise I can do. Do you know of any large, low-medium energy dogs that could make good SDs?
Iām afraid that I canāt help you very much. I am not someone who did proper research on this one, but Iāll try my best.Ā
Maybe some of my followers can help you better.Ā
In general, every dog breed can make a good service dog (depending on the tasks they will have).Ā
Coda helps me incredibly much with my psychological problems, but since he is not a trained Service Dog there are some days he makes me worse. And he would never be 100% reliable on some tasks, simply because he is a very independent dog that didnāt get raised the way a Service Dog or any dog should be raised.Ā
Iād say golden retrievers/labradors are the go-to service dog for any situations, they are friendly, loyal and easily trainable. And I think that you can wear them out a lot with playing fetch and so on (so you donāt have to move too much).Ā
Poodles are also common, because they are very smart and donāt shed as much.Ā
Collies (no borders!) are very reliable, trainable and extremely beautiful btw :)
White Swiss Shepherds make great Service Dogs as well! I know one and he is simply the sweetest!Ā
But for all those breeds it is important to find the right dog for you. The energy levels within those breeds can vary A LOT. Personally I think that the character of a dog makes a bigger difference than the breed itself.Ā
I really have difficulties giving you an answer that makes you and me happy ^^
There are so many people on dogblr that know what they are talking about - maybe ask someone else for better information :)
Shepherds and other herding breeds are not recommended for psych work because they can pick up on and project their handlers anxiety as well as interpret that anxiety as a threat.
Goldens and labs make great service dogs but theyāre still medium to high energy breeds. Goldenās were bred to work as water retrieval dogs and so can be high energy and when not well bred very neurotic. Labs being bred for hunting and bird work are also pretty crazy. I owned and raised labs all my life as my parents bred them. They were amazing dogs but very high energy. While these dogs can have these traits getting a pup from a breeder who breeds for service work specifically or even generally breeds for calmer more stable temperament is preferred.
Hi! I would need to know more about what kind of work/tasks and lifestyle this future dog would be expected to live with before I could give a hardy answer.
BUT going off of what you said (Large, Low-mid energy, Psych service) and adding in some baselines (good for first time trainers, good for no-yard living, not overly sensitive, willingness to work/learn, loyal to a person, no guard instinct, relative easy of obtaining) I think I can help you out.
1) Service bred Labrador or Golden - Note here that I said service-bred. These are hardy, emotionally balanced, and literally bred for this work. A more balanced energy need puts most of them at a mid-energy range but some can be low-energy by the time they hit mid-adulthood. This is the kind of dog I am working with, though he is a 4 month old puppy so his energy level is not representative of the adult baseline but for a lab of his size it is miraculously manageable. These dogs are great, but expensive since you will likely need to go through a service company. A lot to think about. If you want to talk to someone who has an adult retired program Lab SD Iād suggest @chronicallykail .
2) Companion bred Labrador or Golden- More of a mixed bag. You really have to talk to the breeder (or foster, etcā¦) to know what you are getting and should be sure that each puppy has been temperament tested or be able to learn how do do this yourself. I would talk toĀ @humblehouston about this option (think he was not service bred?).
3) Goldendoodles and Labradoodles - A lot of the same deal as companion Labradors, but with the added bonus of being largely āhypoallergenicā compared to 99% of other dogs. Sunny personalities, willing to please, and not as hard to obtain as some breeds UNLESS you go for a company-bred dog. Then the wait list is pretty long. I would talk to @servicedoodle about labradoodles in specific.
4) Standard Poodle - Very smart. Like, crazy smart. But, according to my company, theĀ āwash rateā of purebred poodles is higher than doodles because they can have less steady personalities. They have a higher chance of being antsy or nervous than other dogs of gundog origins, but when you find the right one they are very attentive and fast learners. Iād talk to @thepoodlepack āsince I am not that knowledgeable in their energy levels.
5) Greyhounds and Whippets - Similar enough to be in the same bullet. The most trainable of easily obtained sighthounds, these are not common service dogs but a select few have great serviceable personalities. Greyhounds, when let run in a fenced in yard, are surprisingly low energy and can even adapt to apartment life. Whippets are a bit more suited to new dog owners because of their slightly smaller size but they are less likely to adapt to a small apartment. I would talk to @cosmiccritters about their cutie of a longhair whippet.
Breed types to avoid
1) ANY HERDING BREED -Ā Despite being very serviceable if you can not exercise a dog daily then steer clear of a herding breed. Youāll thank me later.
2) Scenthounds -Ā There is a reason there are few scenthound service dogs that utilize public access. They are hard to focus and tend to be very very hard to get one with the right personality for the job.
3) Nordic breeds - Similar to the herding breeds. If it looks like it would be at home in the snow it will likely need too much run time.
Sorry for responding to this so late! but yes! Houston is a field bred labrador :> This is also great info thus reblogging!
